Binominal Lexemes in Cross-Linguistic Perspective. Towards a Typology of Complex Lexemes
The typological, contrastive, and descriptive studies in this volume investigate the strategies employed by the world’s languages to create complex denotations by combining two noun-like elements, together with the kinds of semantic relation they involve, and their acquisition by children. The term ‘binominal lexeme’ is employed to cover both noun-noun compounds and a range of other naming strategies, including prepositional compounds, relational compounds, construct forms, genitival constructions, and more. Overall, the volume suggests a new, cross-linguistic approach to the study of complex lexeme formation that cuts across the traditional boundaries between syntax, morphology, and lexicon

This approach, often called analogical, has developed highly accurate computational and non-computational models that can predict the classes to which lexemes belong. Like the organization of lexemes in type hierarchies, analogical relations between items help speakers to make sense of intricate systems, and reduce apparent complexity (Köpcke & Zubin 1984). Despite this core commonality, and despite the fact that most linguists seem to agree that analogy plays an important role in language, there has been remarkably little work on bringing together these two approaches. Formal grammar traditions have been very successful in capturing grammatical behaviour, but, in the process, have downplayed the role analogy plays in linguistics (Anderson 2015). In this work, I aim to change this state of affairs. First, by providing an explicit formalization of how analogy interacts with grammar, and second, by showing that analogical effects and relations closely mirror the structures in the lexicon. I will show that both formal grammar approaches, and usage-based analogical models, capture mutually compatible relations in the lexicon

Universal quantification in the nominal domain in American Sign Language
While quantification in American Sign Language (ASL) has been an object of linguistic investigation for more than two decades, there are still relatively few studies on that topic. Most crucially, detailed descriptions of many aspects of quantification in ASL are still lacking.
This dissertation is a description of universal quantification in the nominal domain in ASL. Using data I collected from eight deaf native ASL signers, I report various lexical, morphological, and syntactic strategies that signers use to encode universal quantification. These strategies include explicit marking of quantification by means of lexical universal quantifiers and aspectual marking on directional verbs. In addition, I describe universal interpretations in sentences with definite plural and mass noun phrases and in sentences with predicates conveying total affectedness of the patient/theme argument.
Focusing further on ASL lexical quantifiers, I provide a detailed description that addresses variation in forms, morphological properties, and syntax. This description is further supplemented by the discussion of possible historical sources of ASL universal quantifiers and the place of non-native quantificational expressions in the lexicon. From a typological perspective, I discuss modality-independent and modality-specific properties that explain the distribution of universal quantifiers in ASL. In particular, I consider distributivity, interaction with the semantics of nouns, and the role of space.Linguistic
