Anti-Fall: A Non-intrusive and Real-time Fall Detector Leveraging CSI from Commodity WiFi Devices

Fall is one of the major health threats and obstacles to independent living for elders, timely and reliable fall detection is crucial for mitigating the effects of falls. In this paper, leveraging the fine-grained Channel State Information (CSI) and multi-antenna setting in commodity WiFi devices, we design and implement a real-time, non-intrusive, and low-cost indoor fall detector, called Anti-Fall. For the first time, the CSI phase difference over two antennas is identified as the salient feature to reliably segment the fall and fall-like activities, both phase and amplitude information of CSI is then exploited to accurately separate the fall from other fall-like activities. Experimental results in two indoor scenarios demonstrate that Anti-Fall consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art approach WiFall, with 10% higher detection rate and 10% less false alarm rate on average.Comment: 13 pages,8 figures, corrected version, ICOST conferenc

Pedestrian Counting Based on Piezoelectric Vibration Sensor

Pedestrian counting has attracted much interest of the academic and industry communities for its widespread application in many real-world scenarios. While many recent studies have focused on computer vision-based solutions for the problem, the deployment of cameras brings up concerns about privacy invasion. This paper proposes a novel indoor pedestrian counting approach, based on footstep-induced structural vibration signals with piezoelectric sensors. The approach is privacy-protecting because no audio or video data is acquired. Our approach analyzes the space-differential features from the vibration signals caused by pedestrian footsteps and outputs the number of pedestrians. The proposed approach supports multiple pedestrians walking together with signal mixture. Moreover, it makes no requirement about the number of groups of walking people in the detection area. The experimental results show that the averaged F1-score of our approach is over 0.98, which is better than the vibration signal-based state-of-the-art methods.Peer reviewe

Global Navigation Satellite Systems provide accurate and reliable outdoor positioning to support a large number of applications across many sectors. Unfortunately, such systems do not operate reliably inside buildings due to the signal degradation caused by the absence of a clear line of sight with the satellites. The past two decades have therefore seen intensive research into the development of Indoor Positioning System (IPS). While considerable progress has been made in the indoor localisation discipline, there is still no widely adopted solution. The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices within the modern built environment provides an opportunity to localise human subjects by utilising such ubiquitous networked devices. This thesis presents the development, implementation and evaluation of several passive indoor positioning systems using ambient Visible Light Positioning (VLP), capacitive-flooring, and thermopile sensors (low-resolution thermal cameras). These systems position the human subject in a device-free manner (i.e., the subject is not required to be instrumented). The developed systems improve upon the state-of-the-art solutions by offering superior position accuracy whilst also using more robust and generalised test setups. The developed passive VLP system is one of the first reported solutions making use of ambient light to position a moving human subject. The capacitive-floor based system improves upon the accuracy of existing flooring solutions as well as demonstrates the potential for automated fall detection. The system also requires very little calibration, i.e., variations of the environment or subject have very little impact upon it. The thermopile positioning system is also shown to be robust to changes in the environment and subjects. Improvements are made over the current literature by testing across multiple environments and subjects whilst using a robust ground truth system. Finally, advanced machine learning methods were implemented and benchmarked against a thermopile dataset which has been made available for other researchers to use

This report combines concepts of structural engineering with the field of biomechanics, through human-induced loading. The study analyzes responses of a steel I-beam under the activity of jumping. State-space system identification approach was utilized to create a model that could adhere to various tests and simulations. The model was used to generate simulated output responses to monitor the overall health of the structure. Included, is the analysis and design of the provided structure, along with the system identification and continuous-time representation of the state-space model. A number of PZT devices and software were used as well. Results were evaluated to determine effects on human comfort and system performance. Conclusions involve finishing thoughts and future recommendations
