    Studies on the Liquefaction Behaviour of Tailings and Natural Sand

    This series of studies explores the liquefaction behaviour of cohesionless mine tailings and a natural sand and examines the effectiveness of a bio-mediated treatment for the mitigation of liquefaction. The first study investigates the flow liquefaction failure of the Fundão tailings dam (2015) by analytically assessing the stability of the breached abutment, accounting for the specific triggering mechanism and subsequent strength loss that led to its collapse. The second study evaluates the static liquefaction behaviour of gold mine tailings and its correlations with shear-wave velocity through an experimental program comprised of direct simple-shear and bender element tests. The last study investigates the static and cyclic liquefaction behaviour of Fraser River sand and assesses the efficiency of a Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation treatment in improving the sand’s resistance to liquefaction. Overall, liquefaction is shown to produce substantial strength loss, and bio-mediation is proven to successfully mitigate it in the natural sand

    Vertical III-V Nanowires For In-Memory Computing

    In recent times, deep neural networks (DNNs) have demonstrated great potential in various machine learning applications,such as image classification and object detection for autonomous driving. However, increasing the accuracy of DNNsrequires scaled, faster, and more energy-efficient hardware, which is limited by the von Neumann architecture whereseparate memory and computing units lead to a bottleneck in performance. A promising solution to address the vonNeumann bottleneck is in-memory computing, which can be achieved by integrating non-volatile memory cells such asRRAMs into dense crossbar arrays. On the hardware side, the 1-transistor-1-resistor (1T1R) configuration has been centralto numerous demonstrations of reservoir, in-memory and neuromorphic computing.In this thesis, to achieve a 1T1R cell with a minimal footprint of 4F2, a technology platform has been developed to integrate avertical nanowire GAA MOSFET as a selector device for the RRAM. Firstly, the effect of the geometry (planar to vertical) ofthe ITO/HfO2/TiN RRAM cell was studied where low energy switching (0.49 pJ) and high endurance (106) were achievedin the vertical configuration. Furthermore, InAs was incorporated as the GAA MOSFET selector channel material toleverage the beneficial transport properties of III-V materials desirable for supply voltage scaling. Finally, an approach wasdeveloped wherein InAs is used as the selector channel as well as the RRAM electrode by carefully tuning the InAs nativeoxides. This thesis also presents low-frequency noise characterization of the RRAM cell as well as the MOSFET to furtherunderstand the semiconductor/oxide interface. The vertical 1T1R cell developed in this thesis enables the implementationof Boolean logic operations using a single vertical nanowire while reducing the footprint by 51x when compared to itstraditional CMOS counterpart

    Material Culture and (Forced) Migration argues that materiality is a fundamental dimension of migration. During journeys of migration, people take things with them, or they lose, find and engage things along the way. Movements themselves are framed by objects such as borders, passports, tents, camp infrastructures, boats and mobile phones. This volume brings together chapters that are based on research into a broad range of movements – from the study of forced migration and displacement to the analysis of retirement migration. What ties the chapters together is the perspective of material culture and an understanding of materiality that does not reduce objects to mere symbols. Centring on four interconnected themes – temporality and materiality, methods of object-based migration research, the affective capacities of objects, and the engagement of things in place-making practices – the volume provides a material culture perspective for migration scholars around the globe, representing disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, contemporary archaeology, curatorial studies, history and human geography. The ethnographic nature of the chapters and the focus on everyday objects and practices will appeal to all those interested in the broader conditions and tangible experiences of migration

    Improving Civilian Protection during War through Conflict-Specific Behavioural Regulation of Combatants

    This thesis advances the claim that there is a gap between the regulation of behaviour for the protection of individuals in peace and the regulations needed to protect civilians from combatant violence during war. Social psychology and criminology theories can help to develop the necessary conflict-specific behavioural regulations. This is because social psychology and criminology theories can explain how combatant deviance is adversely affected by psychological processes that reframe combatants’ conceptions of right and wrong and, in so doing, fundamentally alter the way in which combatants view the IHL rules intended to protect civilians. This thesis uses legal doctrinal methodology to establish the current status of IHL application to armed groups and existing IHL protections for civilians, which are based largely on peacetime protections for individuals (e.g., prohibitions on assault, murder, rape, etc.). It demonstrates the need and utility of turning to academic disciplines beyond law, specifically social psychology and criminology, to understand combatant violence toward civilians. Through the use of case studies focusing on the Sierra Leone civil war and the numerous ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this thesis identifies two common combatant behaviours that contribute to the perpetration of IHL violations against civilians, but are currently unregulated by IHL: (1) combatant use of demeaning, degrading, or dehumanizing language toward civilians and (2) combatant use of nicknames, particularly violent or heroic nicknames. The thesis proposes two new IHL regulations to address these behaviours and to inhibit the ability of these behaviours to contribute to violence toward civilians during armed conflict. Ultimately, the thesis demonstrates how combatant psychology can be used to develop the substantive content of IHL for the protection of civilians
