    Sensor Resource Management: Intelligent Multi-objective Modularized Optimization Methodology and Models

    The importance of the optimal Sensor Resource Management (SRM) problem is growing. The number of Radar, EO/IR, Overhead Persistent InfraRed (OPIR), and other sensors with best capabilities, is limited in the stressing tasking environment relative to sensing needs. Sensor assets differ significantly in number, location, and capability over time. To determine on which object a sensor should collect measurements during the next observation period k, the known algorithms favor the object with the expected measurements that would result in the largest gain in relative information. We propose a new tasking paradigm OPTIMA for sensors that goes beyond information gain. It includes Sensor Resource Analyzer, and the Sensor Tasking Algorithm (Tasker). The Tasker maintains timing constraints, resolution, and geometric differences between sensors, relative to the tasking requirements on track quality and the measurements of object characterization quality. The Tasker does this using the computational intelligence approach of multi-objective optimization, which involves evolutionary methods

    On Hybrid Radar Fusion for Integrated Sensing and Communication

    The following paper introduces a novel integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) scenario termed hybrid radar fusion. In this setting, the dual-functional radar and communications (DFRC) base station (BS) acts as a mono-static radar in the downlink (DL), for sensing purposes, while performing its DL communication tasks. Meanwhile, the communication users act as distributed bi-static radar nodes in the uplink (UL) following a frequency-division duplex protocol. The DFRC BS fuses the information available at different DL and UL resource bands to estimate the angles-of-arrival (AoAs) of the multiple targets existing in the scene. In this work, we derive the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion for the hybrid radar fusion problem at hand. Additionally, we design efficient estimators; the first algorithm is based on an alternating optimization approach to solve the ML criterion, while the second one designs an optimization framework that leads to an alternating subspace approach to estimate AoAs for both the target and users. Finally, we demonstrate the superior performance of both algorithms in different scenarios, and the gains offered by these proposed methods through numerical simulations

    A Nonparametric Approach to Segmentation of Ladar Images

    The advent of advanced laser radar (ladar) systems that record full-waveform signal data has inspired numerous inquisitions which aspire to extract additional, previously unavailable, information about the illuminated scene from the collected data. The quality of the information, however, is often related to the limitations of the ladar camera used to collect the data. This research project uses full-waveform analysis of ladar signals, and basic principles of optics, to propose a new formulation for an accepted signal model. A new waveform model taking into account backscatter reflectance is the key to overcoming specific deficiencies of the ladar camera at hand, namely the ability to discern pulse-spreading effects of elongated targets. A concert of non-parametric statistics and familiar image processing methods are used to calculate the orientation angle of the illuminated objects, and the deficiency of the hardware is circumvented. Segmentation of the various ladar images performed as part of the angle estimation, and this is shown to be a new and effective strategy for analyzing the output of the AFIT ladar camera

    Improving Range Estimation of a 3D FLASH LADAR via Blind Deconvolution

    The purpose of this research effort is to improve and characterize range estimation in a three-dimensional FLASH LAser Detection And Ranging (3D FLASH LADAR) by investigating spatial dimension blurring effects. The myriad of emerging applications for 3D FLASH LADAR both as primary and supplemental sensor necessitate superior performance including accurate range estimates. Along with range information, this sensor also provides an imaging or laser vision capability. Consequently, accurate range estimates would also greatly aid in image quality of a target or remote scene under interrogation. Unlike previous efforts, this research accounts for pixel coupling by defining the range image mathematical model as a convolution between the system spatial impulse response and the object (target or remote scene) at a particular range slice. Using this model, improved range estimation is possible by object restoration from the data observations. Object estimation is principally performed by deriving a blind deconvolution Generalized Expectation Maximization (GEM) algorithm with the range determined from the estimated object by a normalized correlation method. Theoretical derivations and simulation results are verified with experimental data of a bar target taken from a 3D FLASH LADAR system in a laboratory environment. Additionally, among other factors, range separation estimation variance is a function of two LADAR design parameters (range sampling interval and transmitted pulse-width), which can be optimized using the expected range resolution between two point sources. Using both CRB theory and an unbiased estimator, an investigation is accomplished that finds the optimal pulse-width for several range sampling scenarios using a range resolution metric

    A Survey on Fundamental Limits of Integrated Sensing and Communication

    The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which the sensing and communication share the same frequency band and hardware, has emerged as a key technology in future wireless systems due to two main reasons. First, many important application scenarios in fifth generation (5G) and beyond, such as autonomous vehicles, Wi-Fi sensing and extended reality, requires both high-performance sensing and wireless communications. Second, with millimeter wave and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies widely employed in 5G and beyond, the future communication signals tend to have high-resolution in both time and angular domain, opening up the possibility for ISAC. As such, ISAC has attracted tremendous research interest and attentions in both academia and industry. Early works on ISAC have been focused on the design, analysis and optimization of practical ISAC technologies for various ISAC systems. While this line of works are necessary, it is equally important to study the fundamental limits of ISAC in order to understand the gap between the current state-of-the-art technologies and the performance limits, and provide useful insights and guidance for the development of better ISAC technologies that can approach the performance limits. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive survey for the current research progress on the fundamental limits of ISAC. Particularly, we first propose a systematic classification method for both traditional radio sensing (such as radar sensing and wireless localization) and ISAC so that they can be naturally incorporated into a unified framework. Then we summarize the major performance metrics and bounds used in sensing, communications and ISAC, respectively. After that, we present the current research progresses on fundamental limits of each class of the traditional sensing and ISAC systems. Finally, the open problems and future research directions are discussed

    Exploiting Sparse Structures in Source Localization and Tracking

    This thesis deals with the modeling of structured signals under different sparsity constraints. Many phenomena exhibit an inherent structure that may be exploited when setting up models, examples include audio waves, radar, sonar, and image objects. These structures allow us to model, identify, and classify the processes, enabling parameter estimation for, e.g., identification, localisation, and tracking.In this work, such structures are exploited, with the goal to achieve efficient localisation and tracking of a structured source signal. Specifically, two scenarios are considered. In papers A and B, the aim is to find a sparse subset of a structured signal such that the signal parameters and source locations maybe estimated in an optimal way. For the sparse subset selection, a combinatorial optimization problem is approximately solved by means of convex relaxation, with the results of allowing for different types of a priori information to be incorporated in the optimization. In paper C, a sparse subset of data is provided, and a generative model is used to find the location of an unknown number of jammers in a wireless network, with the jammers’ movement in the network being tracked as additional observations become available

    V2I-aided Tracking Design

    In this paper, we design the vehicle tracking in the terahertz (THz) vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks, where roadside units (RSUs) equipped with leaky-wave antennas help to estimate the driving states of multiple vehicles after receiving the vehicles’ feedback. Different from the conventional phased arrays, the leaky-wave antenna has the potential of improving the sensing accuracy with lower system overhead thanks to its unique spatial-spectral coupling feature. The generalized mobile scenario is studied in which vehicles drive at time-varying speeds. A novel unscented Kalman filter (UKF) based solution is proposed to track the vehicles without requirement of addressing the Doppler effect. Simulation results confirm that the proposed tracking solution can evaluate the propagation angle, vehicle’s states and inter-vehicle distance accurately.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe
