Desenvolvimento de dispositivo portátil para aquisição de imagens de pupilometria dinâmica para diagnóstico precoce de neuropatia autonômica em pacientes com diabetes

Engenharia Elétrica.O Diabetes Mellitus (DM) é uma doença autoimune que ocorre quando há um alto nível de glicose no sangue, causado por uma deficiência na produção de insulina ou pelo seu uso de forma não efetiva. Atualmente existem quase meio bilhão de pessoas no mundo com essa condição. A Neuropatia Autonômica Diabética (NAD) é uma das mais comuns e sérias complicações causadas pelo DM. A NAD é uma condição que pode envolver todo o sistema nervoso autônomo, aumentando de forma significativa as taxas de mortalidade e invalidez entre pacientes, ocorrendo muitas vezes de forma silenciosa e assintomática. A detecção dessa condição em sua fase inicial permite o controle e pode evitar grande parte de seus efeitos. A pupilometria é uma técnica que consiste na medição de vários parâmetros relacionados ao reflexo pupilar. Muitos desses parâmetros são controlados pelos ramos simpático e parassimpático do sistema nervoso autônomo, logo, é possível a detecção da NAD em pacientes diabéticos utilizando a pupilometria. Esse trabalho se dedica a construção de um dispositivo portátil e confiável para a aquisição de imagens de pupilometria dinâmica.Diabetes Mellitus is an auto-immune disease that occurs when there is a high level of glucose in the blood due an insulin production deficiency or due its misuse. There are almost half billion people suffering from that condition nowadays. Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathy is one of the most serious and usual complication of diabetes. It’s a condition that can affect the whole autonomic nervous system, significantly increasing death and invalidity rates among the patients, often occurring in a silent and asymptomatic way. Early detection of that condition enables control and prevention of most of its effects. Pupillometry is a technique used to measure a number of parameters related to the pupilar reflex. Many of those parameters are controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system, therefore it’s possible to detect autonomic neuropathies using pupillometry.
