Robust Linear Precoder Design for Multi-cell Downlink Transmission
Coordinated information processing by the base stations of multi-cell
wireless networks enhances the overall quality of communication in the network.
Such coordinations for optimizing any desired network-wide quality of service
(QoS) necessitate the base stations to acquire and share some channel state
information (CSI). With perfect knowledge of channel states, the base stations
can adjust their transmissions for achieving a network-wise QoS optimality. In
practice, however, the CSI can be obtained only imperfectly. As a result, due
to the uncertainties involved, the network is not guaranteed to benefit from a
globally optimal QoS. Nevertheless, if the channel estimation perturbations are
confined within bounded regions, the QoS measure will also lie within a bounded
region. Therefore, by exploiting the notion of robustness in the worst-case
sense some worst-case QoS guarantees for the network can be asserted. We adopt
a popular model for noisy channel estimates that assumes that estimation noise
terms lie within known hyper-spheres. We aim to design linear transceivers that
optimize a worst-case QoS measure in downlink transmissions. In particular, we
focus on maximizing the worst-case weighted sum-rate of the network and the
minimum worst-case rate of the network. For obtaining such transceiver designs,
we offer several centralized (fully cooperative) and distributed (limited
cooperation) algorithms which entail different levels of complexity and
information exchange among the base stations.Comment: 38 Pages, 7 Figures, To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal

Directional Modulation via Symbol-Level Precoding: A Way to Enhance Security
Wireless communication provides a wide coverage at the cost of exposing
information to unintended users. As an information-theoretic paradigm, secrecy
rate derives bounds for secure transmission when the channel to the
eavesdropper is known. However, such bounds are shown to be restrictive in
practice and may require exploitation of specialized coding schemes. In this
paper, we employ the concept of directional modulation and follow a signal
processing approach to enhance the security of multi-user MIMO communication
systems when a multi-antenna eavesdropper is present. Enhancing the security is
accomplished by increasing the symbol error rate at the eavesdropper. Unlike
the information-theoretic secrecy rate paradigm, we assume that the legitimate
transmitter is not aware of its channel to the eavesdropper, which is a more
realistic assumption. We examine the applicability of MIMO receiving algorithms
at the eavesdropper. Using the channel knowledge and the intended symbols for
the users, we design security enhancing symbol-level precoders for different
transmitter and eavesdropper antenna configurations. We transform each design
problem to a linearly constrained quadratic program and propose two solutions,
namely the iterative algorithm and one based on non-negative least squares, at
each scenario for a computationally-efficient modulation. Simulation results
verify the analysis and show that the designed precoders outperform the
benchmark scheme in terms of both power efficiency and security enhancement.Comment: This manuscript is submitted to IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in

Cooperative Multi-Cell Block Diagonalization with Per-Base-Station Power Constraints
Block diagonalization (BD) is a practical linear precoding technique that
eliminates the inter-user interference in downlink multiuser multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper, we apply BD to the downlink
transmission in a cooperative multi-cell MIMO system, where the signals from
different base stations (BSs) to all the mobile stations (MSs) are jointly
designed with the perfect knowledge of the downlink channels and transmit
messages. Specifically, we study the optimal BD precoder design to maximize the
weighted sum-rate of all the MSs subject to a set of per-BS power constraints.
This design problem is formulated in an auxiliary MIMO broadcast channel (BC)
with a set of transmit power constraints corresponding to those for individual
BSs in the multi-cell system. By applying convex optimization techniques, this
paper develops an efficient algorithm to solve this problem, and derives the
closed-form expression for the optimal BD precoding matrix. It is revealed that
the optimal BD precoding vectors for each MS in the per-BS power constraint
case are in general non-orthogonal, which differs from the conventional
orthogonal BD precoder design for the MIMO-BC under one single sum-power
constraint. Moreover, for the special case of single-antenna BSs and MSs, the
proposed solution reduces to the optimal zero-forcing beamforming (ZF-BF)
precoder design for the weighted sum-rate maximization in the multiple-input
single-output (MISO) BC with per-antenna power constraints. Suboptimal and
low-complexity BD/ZF-BF precoding schemes are also presented, and their
achievable rates are compared against those with the optimal schemes.Comment: accepted in JSAC, special issue on cooperative communications on

Wireless MIMO Switching: Weighted Sum Mean Square Error and Sum Rate Optimization
This paper addresses joint transceiver and relay design for a wireless
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switching scheme that enables data
exchange among multiple users. Here, a multi-antenna relay linearly precodes
the received (uplink) signals from multiple users before forwarding the signal
in the downlink, where the purpose of precoding is to let each user receive its
desired signal with interference from other users suppressed. The problem of
optimizing the precoder based on various design criteria is typically
non-convex and difficult to solve. The main contribution of this paper is a
unified approach to solve the weighted sum mean square error (MSE) minimization
and weighted sum rate maximization problems in MIMO switching. Specifically, an
iterative algorithm is proposed for jointly optimizing the relay's precoder and
the users' receive filters to minimize the weighted sum MSE. It is also shown
that the weighted sum rate maximization problem can be reformulated as an
iterated weighted sum MSE minimization problem and can therefore be solved
similarly to the case of weighted sum MSE minimization. With properly chosen
initial values, the proposed iterative algorithms are asymptotically optimal in
both high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes for MIMO switching,
either with or without self-interference cancellation (a.k.a., physical-layer
network coding). Numerical results show that the optimized MIMO switching
scheme based on the proposed algorithms significantly outperforms existing
approaches in the literature.Comment: This manuscript is under 2nd review of IEEE Transactions on

Design of optimal equalizers and precoders for MIMO channels
Channel equalization has been extensively studied as a method of combating ISI and ICI for high speed MIMO data communication systems. This dissertation focuses on optimal channel equalization in the presence of non-white observation noises with unknown PSD but bounded power-norm. A worst-case approach to optimal design of channel equalizers leads to an equivalent optimal H-infinity filtering problem for the MIMO communication systems. An explicit design algorithm is derived which not only achieves the zero-forcing (ZF) condition, but also minimizes the RMS error between the transmitted symbols and the received symbols. The second part of this dissertation investigates the design of optimal precoders which minimize the bit error rate (BER) subject to a fixed transmit-power constraint for the multiple antennas downlink communication channels under the perfect reconstruction (PR) condition. The closed form solutions are derived and an efficient design algorithm is proposed. The performance evaluations indicate that the optimal precoder design for multiple antennas communication systems proposed herein is an attractive/reasonable alternative to the existing precoder design techniques
