Cloud Security : A Review of Recent Threats and Solution Models
The most significant barrier to the wide adoption of cloud services has been attributed to perceived cloud insecurity (Smitha, Anna and Dan, 2012). In an attempt to review this subject, this paper will explore some of the major security threats to the cloud and the security models employed in tackling them. Access control violations, message integrity violations, data leakages, inability to guarantee complete data deletion, code injection, malwares and lack of expertise in cloud technology rank the major threats. The European Union invested €3m in City University London to research into the certification of Cloud security services. This and more recent developments are significant in addressing increasing public concerns regarding the confidentiality, integrity and privacy of data held in cloud environments. Some of the current cloud security models adopted in addressing cloud security threats were – Encryption of all data at storage and during transmission. The Cisco IronPort S-Series web security appliance was among security solutions to solve cloud access control issues. 2-factor Authentication with RSA SecurID and close monitoring appeared to be the most popular solutions to authentication and access control issues in the cloud. Database Active Monitoring, File Active Monitoring, URL Filters and Data Loss Prevention were solutions for detecting and preventing unauthorised data migration into and within clouds. There is yet no guarantee for a complete deletion of data by cloud providers on client requests however; FADE may be a solution (Yang et al., 2012)
Towards the Development of a Security Framework to Protect Against Social Networks Services Threats
Internal security attacks are malicious and sometimes inadvertent in nature. Although security policies, standards, awareness,strategies and tools currently are usually put in place, employees usually engage in risky behaviours that can jeopardizebusiness interest. The problem has become acute with the proliferation of Social Networks Services (SNS) that has nowconstitute a threat through which business enterprise data networks can be attacked, leading to information leakage andexternal intrusions. The direction of this research is to propose, develop and test a framework that can be used to guide andmitigate against security threats and vulnerabilities on Social Network Services. Privacy Leakage in Mobile Computing: Tools, Methods, and Characteristics
The number of smartphones, tablets, sensors, and connected wearable devices
are rapidly increasing. Today, in many parts of the globe, the penetration of
mobile computers has overtaken the number of traditional personal computers.
This trend and the always-on nature of these devices have resulted in
increasing concerns over the intrusive nature of these devices and the privacy
risks that they impose on users or those associated with them. In this paper,
we survey the current state of the art on mobile computing research, focusing
on privacy risks and data leakage effects. We then discuss a number of methods,
recommendations, and ongoing research in limiting the privacy leakages and
associated risks by mobile computing
Information Leakage through Online Social Networking: Opening the Doorway for Advanced Persistence Threats
The explosion of online social networking (OSN) in recent years has caused damages to organisations due to leakage of information by their employees. Employees’ social networking behaviour, whether accidental or intentional, provides an opportunity for advanced persistent threats (APT) attackers to realise their social engineering techniques and undetectable zero-day exploits. APT attackers use a spear-phishing method that targeted on key employees of victim organisations through social media in order to conduct reconnaissance and theft of confidential proprietary information. This conceptual paper posits OSN as the most challenging channel of information leakage and provides an explanation about the underlying factors of employees leaking information via this channel through a theoretical lens from information systems. It also describes how OSN becomes an attack vector of APT owing to employees’ social networking behaviour, and finally, recommends security education, training and awareness (SETA) for organisations to combat these threats
Data Confidentiality in Mobile Ad hoc Networks
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are self-configuring infrastructure-less
networks comprised of mobile nodes that communicate over wireless links without
any central control on a peer-to-peer basis. These individual nodes act as
routers to forward both their own data and also their neighbours' data by
sending and receiving packets to and from other nodes in the network. The
relatively easy configuration and the quick deployment make ad hoc networks
suitable the emergency situations (such as human or natural disasters) and for
military units in enemy territory. Securing data dissemination between these
nodes in such networks, however, is a very challenging task. Exposing such
information to anyone else other than the intended nodes could cause a privacy
and confidentiality breach, particularly in military scenarios. In this paper
we present a novel framework to enhance the privacy and data confidentiality in
mobile ad hoc networks by attaching the originator policies to the messages as
they are sent between nodes. We evaluate our framework using the Network
Simulator (NS-2) to check whether the privacy and confidentiality of the
originator are met. For this we implemented the Policy Enforcement Points
(PEPs), as NS-2 agents that manage and enforce the policies attached to packets
at every node in the MANET.Comment: 12 page
A comprehensive meta-analysis of cryptographic security mechanisms for cloud computing

The major motivation behind the cloud setup is economic benefits, because it assures the reduction in expenditure for operational and infrastructural purposes. To transform it into a reality there are some impediments and hurdles which are required to be tackled, most profound of which are security, privacy and reliability issues. As the user data is revealed to the cloud, it departs the protection-sphere of the data owner. However, this brings partly new security and privacy concerns. This work focuses on these issues related to various cloud services and deployment models by spotlighting their major challenges. While the classical cryptography is an ancient discipline, modern cryptography, which has been mostly developed in the last few decades, is the subject of study which needs to be implemented so as to ensure strong security and privacy mechanisms in today’s real-world scenarios. The technological solutions, short and long term research goals of the cloud security will be described and addressed using various classical cryptographic mechanisms as well as modern ones.
