An autonomous satellite architecture integrating deliberative reasoning and behavioural intelligence
This paper describes a method for the design of autonomous spacecraft, based upon behavioral approaches to intelligent robotics. First, a number of previous spacecraft automation projects are reviewed. A methodology for the design of autonomous spacecraft is then presented, drawing upon both the European Space Agency technological center (ESTEC) automation and robotics methodology and the subsumption architecture for autonomous robots. A layered competency model for autonomous orbital spacecraft is proposed. A simple example of low level competencies and their interaction is presented in order to illustrate the methodology. Finally, the general principles adopted for the control hardware design of the AUSTRALIS-1 spacecraft are described. This system will provide an orbital experimental platform for spacecraft autonomy studies, supporting the exploration of different logical control models, different computational metaphors within the behavioral control framework, and different mappings from the logical control model to its physical implementation
ILLUSTRATING THE PERCEPTION OF STUDENTS TOWARDS AUTONOMOUS SERVICE ROBOTS IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY
Research purpose â The purpose of the study was to explore the studentsâ perceptions
towards autonomous service robots, using interviews and, in a novel manner, also their
drawings, to generate data. The paper contributes to current knowledge claims around the
Techno-Economic Paradigm by providing a greater understanding of, and student response to,
autonomous service robots. Additional insights were gained on transformational skills set
for tourism practitioners.
Design/Methodology/Approach â A qualitative approach followed a participatory research
design which was set in a public higher education institution. Undergraduate tourism and
hospitality students who had previous exposure and engagement with robots were the
purposive sample. The paper draws on the Techno-Economic Paradigm to illuminate how,
according to studentsâ experiences and perceptions, autonomous robots interact in, and
disrupt, the tourism industry.
Findings â Four main drawings essentially expressed tourism and hospitality studentsâ
perceptions of autonomous service robots in the tourism industry. Centrally there are
opportunities for the absorption of robots in certain sectors of the tourism industry.
Despite greater use of robots in service-driven industries like tourism, it remains
challenging to establish the right balance between humans and robots, and up- and
re-skilling transformation would be required of those working in the tourism industry and
those studying towards a tourism qualification. This study advances that additional
research is still required, including longitudinal studies on the effects of autonomous
services in the tourism industry, as well as studentsâ perception on the use of robots,
re-skilling as well as ethical risks to customers, the greater value to the economy and
those working in the tourism industry.
Originality of the research â The article contributes to the use of visual methodology as
part of data generation, specifically how studentsâ perceptions regarding autonomous
robots in the tourism industry were graphically distilled using this methodology

Designing Robots for Care: Care Centered Value-Sensitive Design
The prospective robots in healthcare intended to be included within the conclave of the nurse-patient relationshipâwhat I refer to as care robotsârequire rigorous ethical reflection to ensure their design and introduction do not impede the promotion of values and the dignity of patients at such a vulnerable and sensitive time in their lives. The ethical evaluation of care robots requires insight into the values at stake in the healthcare tradition. Whatâs more, given the stage of their development and lack of standards provided by the International Organization for Standardization to guide their development, ethics ought to be included into the design process of such robots. The manner in which this may be accomplished, as presented here, uses the blueprint of the Value-sensitive design approach as a means for creating a framework tailored to care contexts. Using care values as the foundational values to be integrated into a technology and using the elements in care, from the care ethics perspective, as the normative criteria, the resulting approach may be referred to as care centered value-sensitive design. The framework proposed here allows for the ethical evaluation of care robots both retrospectively and prospectively. By evaluating care robots in this way, we may ultimately ask what kind of care we, as a society, want to provide in the futur

A Value-Sensitive Design Approach to Intelligent Agents
This chapter proposed a novel design methodology called Value-Sensitive Design and its potential application to the field of artificial intelligence research and design. It discusses the imperatives in adopting a design philosophy that embeds values into the design of artificial agents at the early stages of AI development. Because of the high risk stakes in the unmitigated design of artificial agents, this chapter proposes that even though VSD may turn out to be a less-than-optimal design methodology, it currently provides a framework that has the potential to embed stakeholder values and incorporate current design methods. The reader should begin to take away the importance of a proactive design approach to intelligent agents
