    Design and Implementation of a Massively Parallel Version of DIRECT

    This paper describes several massively parallel implementations for a global search algorithm DIRECT. Two parallel schemes take different approaches to address DIRECT's design challenges imposed by memory requirements and data dependency. Three design aspects in topology, data structures, and task allocation are compared in detail. The goal is to analytically investigate the strengths and weaknesses of these parallel schemes, identify several key sources of inefficiency, and experimentally evaluate a number of improvements in the latest parallel DIRECT implementation. The performance studies demonstrate improved data structure efficiency and load balancing on a 2200 processor cluster

    Multidimensional Constrained Global Optimization in Domains with Computable Boundaries

    Multidimensional constrained global optimization problem with objective function under Lipschitz condition and constraints generating a feasible domain with computable boundaries is considered. For solving this problem the dimensionality reduction approach on the base of the nested optimization scheme is used. This scheme reduces initial multidimensional problem to a family of one-dimensional subproblems and allows applying univariate methods for the execution of multidimensional optimization. Sequential and parallel modifications of well-known information-statistical methods of Lipschitz optimization are proposed for solving the univariate subproblems arising inside the nested scheme in the case of domains with computable boundaries. A comparison with classical penalty function method being traditional means of taking into account the constraints is carried out. The results of experiments demonstrate a significant advantage of the methods proposed over the penalty function method

    A multi-objective DIRECT algorithm for ship hull optimization

    The paper is concerned with black-box nonlinear constrained multi-objective optimization problems. Our interest is the definition of a multi-objective deterministic partition-based algorithm. The main target of the proposed algorithm is the solution of a real ship hull optimization problem. To this purpose and in pursuit of an efficient method, we develop an hybrid algorithm by coupling a multi-objective DIRECT-type algorithm with an efficient derivative-free local algorithm. The results obtained on a set of “hard” nonlinear constrained multi-objective test problems show viability of the proposed approach. Results on a hull-form optimization of a high-speed catamaran (sailing in head waves in the North Pacific Ocean) are also presented. In order to consider a real ocean environment, stochastic sea state and speed are taken into account. The problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization aimed at (i) the reduction of the expected value of the mean total resistance in irregular head waves, at variable speed and (ii) the increase of the ship operability, with respect to a set of motion-related constraints. We show that the hybrid method performs well also on this industrial problem
