SDDV: scalable data dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks
An important challenge in the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) is the scalability of data dissemination. Under dense traffic conditions, the large number of communicating vehicles can easily result in a congested wireless channel. In that situation, delays and packet losses increase to a level where the VANET cannot be applied for road safety applications anymore. This paper introduces scalable data dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks (SDDV), a holistic solution to this problem. It is composed of several techniques spread across the different layers of the protocol stack. Simulation results are presented that illustrate the severity of the scalability problem when applying common state-of-the-art techniques and parameters. Starting from such a baseline solution, optimization techniques are gradually added to SDDV until the scalability problem is entirely solved. Besides the performance evaluation based on simulations, the paper ends with an evaluation of the final SDDV configuration on real hardware. Experiments including 110 nodes are performed on the iMinds w-iLab.t wireless lab. The results of these experiments confirm the results obtained in the corresponding simulations

The HopScotch rural wireless broadband access test bed uses a network of low power base stations, powered by renewable energy sources to provide a low-cost rural broadband solution. In this paper we discuss the low power design aspects of the HopScotch base station and the impact on the required generation potential of renewable sources, battery bank sizing and the use of tracking PV arrays
Design and realization of precise indoor localization mechanism for Wi-Fi devices
Despite the abundant literature in the field, there is still the need to find a time-efficient, highly accurate, easy to deploy and robust localization algorithm for real use. The algorithm only involves minimal human intervention. We propose an enhanced Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) based positioning algorithm for Wi-Fi capable devices, called the Dynamic Weighted Evolution for Location Tracking (DWELT). Due to the multiple phenomena affecting the propagation of radio signals, RSSI measurements show fluctuations that hinder the utilization of straightforward positioning mechanisms from widely known propagation loss models. Instead, DWELT uses data processing of raw RSSI values and applies a weighted posterior-probabilistic evolution for quick convergence of localization and tracking. In this paper, we present the first implementation of DWELT, intended for 1D location (applicable to tunnels or corridors), and the first step towards a more generic implementation. Network-Coded Multiple Access
This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a first wireless local
area network (WLAN) system that jointly exploits physical-layer network coding
(PNC) and multiuser decoding (MUD) to boost system throughput. We refer to this
multiple access mode as Network-Coded Multiple Access (NCMA). Prior studies on
PNC mostly focused on relay networks. NCMA is the first realized multiple
access scheme that establishes the usefulness of PNC in a non-relay setting.
NCMA allows multiple nodes to transmit simultaneously to the access point (AP)
to boost throughput. In the non-relay setting, when two nodes A and B transmit
to the AP simultaneously, the AP aims to obtain both packet A and packet B
rather than their network-coded packet. An interesting question is whether
network coding, specifically PNC which extracts packet (A XOR B), can still be
useful in such a setting. We provide an affirmative answer to this question
with a novel two-layer decoding approach amenable to real-time implementation.
Our USRP prototype indicates that NCMA can boost throughput by 100% in the
medium-high SNR regime (>=10dB). We believe further throughput enhancement is
possible by allowing more than two users to transmit together

Common security issues and challenges in wireless sensor networks and IEEE 802.11 wireless mesh networks
Both Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are multi-hop wireless networks. WMN is an emerging community based integrated broadband wireless network which ensures high bandwidth ubiquitous internet provision to users, while, WSN is application specific and ensures large scale real-time data processing in complex environment. Both these wireless networks have some common vulnerable features which may increase the chances of different sorts of security attacks. Wireless sensor nodes have computation, memory and power limitations, which do not allow for implementation of complex security mechanism. In this paper, we discuss the common limitations and vulnerable features of WMN and WSN, along with the associated security threats and possible countermeasures. We also propose security mechanisms keeping in view the architecture and limitations of both. This article will serve as a baseline guide for the new researchers who are concern with the security aspects of WMN and WSN
Application of multiple-wireless to a visual localisation system for emergency services
AbstractâIn this paper we discuss the application of multiplewireless technology to a practical context-enhanced service system called ViewNet. ViewNet develops technologies to support enhanced coordination and cooperation between operation teams in the emergency services and the police. Distributed localisation of users and mapping of environments implemented over a secure wireless network enables teams of operatives to search and map an incident area rapidly and in full coordination with each other and with a control centre. Sensing is based on fusing absolute positioning systems (UWB and GPS) with relative localisation and mapping from on-body or handheld vision and inertial sensors. This paper focuses on the case for multiple-wireless capabilities in such a system and the benefits it can provide. We describe our work of developing a software API to support both WLAN and TETRA in ViewNet. It also provides a basis for incorporating future wireless technologies into ViewNet. I
Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment
In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in
the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing
technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the
increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of
wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container
terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual
effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality
of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can
be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most
systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors,
but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the
reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and
what remains to be addressed in the future
