    Analog controller based on sliding mode control for piezoelectric actuators

    Today, the digital implementation of the controllers is mainly preferred from reprogrammability point of view. Many important control problems can be effectively solved using a digital architecture in conjunction with analog-to-digital (ADC) and/or digital-to-analog conversion (DAC). Digital solutions offer two very attractive advantages: (1)-promise to shorten design cycles, and (2)-provide the freedom to reprogram the design in simple ways. This ease-of-change stands in sharp contrast to the great effort required to redesign a typical hard-wired analog implementation. However, depending on the complexity of the plant and the degrees of freedom (DOF) to be controlled, digital implementation of an algorithm may be demanding due to the high computational power requirement to run in real time. The necessity for the acquisition of the analog signals on the other hand requires ADC and DAC conversions that compel extra conditions on the system. Hence, multi-DOF systems may require either diminish in the systems operation frequency or additional hardware to run the algorithm in parallel for each DOF. This work aims to develop an analog motion controller for single input single output (SISO) plants of complex nature. As the control algorithm, Sliding Mode Control (SMC) like the well known robust nonlinear controller is selected as a design framework. Originally designed as a system motion for dynamic systems whose essential open-loop behavior can be sufficiently modeled with ordinary differential equations, Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is one of the effective nonlinear robust control approaches that provide system invariance to uncertainties once the sliding mode motion is enforced in the system. An important aspect of sliding mode is the discontinuous nature of the control action, which switches between two values to move the system motion on so-called ā€œsliding modeā€ that exist in a manifold and therefore often referred as variable structure control (VSC). The resulting feedback system is called variable structure system (VSS). The position tracking of the piezoelectric actuators (PEA) is selected as the test bed for the designed system. Piezoelectricity, the ability of the material to become strained due to an electric field, gives the possibility to user those materials as actuator in sub-micrometer domain for a range of applications. Piezoelectric effect is a crystalline effect, and therefore, piezoelectric actuators do not suffer from ā€œstick slipā€ effect mainly caused by the friction between elements of a mechanical system. This property theoretically offers an unlimited resolution, and therefore piezoelectric actuators are already used in many applications to provide sub-micrometer resolution. Still the achievable resolution in practice can be limited by a number of other factors such as the piezo control amplifier (electronic noise), sensor (resolution, noise and mounting precision) and control electronics (noise and sensitivity to EMI). As a result of this work, we are aiming an analog controller for SISO systems and by the use of this controller, improvement on the tracking performance for the plant we are studying and decrease on the possible computational load on digital controllers is targeted

The symposium included 13 sessions in which a total of 35 papers were presented. The technical sessions covered the areas of maglev, controls, high critical temperature (T(sub c)) superconductivity, bearings, magnetic suspension and balance systems (MSBS), levitation, modeling, and applications.     Modelling and real-time control of a high performance rotary wood planing machine

    Rotary planing is one of the most valuable machining operations in the timber processing industry. It has been established that cutting tool inaccuracy and forced vibration during the machining process are the primary causes of surface quality degradation. The main aim of this thesis is to design a control architecture that is suitable for adaptive operation of a wood planing machining in order to improve the quality of its surface finish. In order to achieve the stated goal, thorough understanding of the effects of machine deficiencies on surface finish quality is required. Therefore, a generic simulation model for synthesising the surface profiles produced by wood planing process is first developed. The model is used to simulate the combined effects of machining parameters, vibration and cutting tool inaccuracy on the resultant surface profiles. It has been postulated that online monitoring of surface finish quality can be used to provide feedback information for a secondary control loop for the machining process, which will lead to the production of consistently high quality surface finishes. There is an existing vision-based wood surface profile measurement technique, but the application of the technique has been limited to static wood samples. This thesis extends the application of the technique to moving wood samples. It is shown experimentally that the method is suitable for in-process surface profile measurements. The current industrial wood planing machines do not have the capability of measuring and adjusting process parameters in real-time. Therefore, knowledge of the causes of surface finish degradation would enable the operators to optimise the mechanical structure of the machines offline. For this reason, two novel approaches for characterising defects on planed timber surfaces have been created in this thesis using synthetic data. The output of this work is a software tool that can assist machine operators in inferring the causes of defects based on the waviness components of the workpiece surface finish. The main achievement in this research is the design of a new active wood planing technique that combines real-time cutter path optimisation (cutting tool inaccuracy compensation) with vibration disturbance rejection. The technique is based on real-time vertical displacements of the machine spindle. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a smart wood planing machine show significant improvements in the dynamic performance of the machine and the produced surface finish quality. Potential areas for future research include application of the defects characterisation techniques to real data and full integration of the dynamic surface profile measurements with the smart wood planing machine

    Numerical Modelling and Analysis of a New Rotor Cooling Technique for Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machines

    An efficient thermal management is essential for an electrical machine because it determines its durability and performance; particularly the continuous power output. Without good thermal management, the operational temperature will exceed the machineā€™s temperature threshold limit, which may possibly lead to catastrophic failure. YASA Motors Ltd. specialise in the design and development of high efficiency electric motors specifically aimed at the automotive industry. However, the current Yokeless and Segmented Armature (YASA) machine has limited performance due to the sealed or confined design that limits the heat transfer on the rotors and the permanent magnets. Therefore, this thesis presents a new cooling technique for the YASA machine but which can also be adapted to any Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) design in order to maximise its continuous performance for automotive and motorsports applications. The work begins with a detailed review on the issues of thermal challenges for electrical machines (i.e. efficiency, reliability and performance), the derivation of an AFPM machine and then the heat sources from which the electric machine losses are produced. Utilising the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the losses of a 50kW sealed YASA machine has been studied in order to understand the thermal characteristics and thermal distribution. The novel secondary cooling strategy of the rotor has been implemented by attaching several fan designs on the rotor including other design iteration to assess its cooling performance. The idea is to allow the fan to drive the coolant (air) in the machine and become a heat exchanger at the same time. At this stage, only a single side of the rotor has studied under secondary cooling design, while the other side remained sealed. In order to aid the design assessment, a novel dimensionless number named Cooling Performance Index (CPI) has been proposed. The CPI number helps in comparing the cooling performance, apart from the comparison in the flow and thermal characteristics of each design change. The dual rotor cooling technique for the YASA machine is subsequently presented, where the backward curve fan has been selected as the best option based on its higher CPI number. The air outlet of the non-drive-end rotor that has an attached fan, was channelled to the drive-end to cool the other side of the rotor. The CFD analysis prove that the dual rotor cooling technique is able to maintain the rotors and magnets temperature with an increase up to 300% (150kW) continuous power compared to the 50kW on the existing sealed machine. The work presented here is not limited to the YASA machine case; rather it can be extrapolated to any other disc-type AFPM machine

    The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included
