    A study of event traffic during the shared manipulation of objects within a collaborative virtual environment

    Event management must balance consistency and responsiveness above the requirements of shared object interaction within a Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) system. An understanding of the event traffic during collaborative tasks helps in the design of all aspects of a CVE system. The application, user activity, the display interface, and the network resources, all play a part in determining the characteristics of event management. Linked cubic displays lend themselves well to supporting natural social human communication between remote users. To allow users to communicate naturally and subconsciously, continuous and detailed tracking is necessary. This, however, is hard to balance with the real-time consistency constraints of general shared object interaction. This paper aims to explain these issues through a detailed examination of event traffic produced by a typical CVE, using both immersive and desktop displays, while supporting a variety of collaborative activities. We analyze event traffic during a highly collaborative task requiring various forms of shared object manipulation, including the concurrent manipulation of a shared object. Event sources are categorized and the influence of the form of object sharing as well as the display device interface are detailed. With the presented findings the paper wishes to aid the design of future systems

    Low-Power, High Data Rate Transceiver System for Implantable Prostheses

    Wireless telemetry is crucial for long-term implantable neural recording systems. RF-encoded neurological signals often require high data-rates to transmit information from multiple electrodes with a sufficient sampling frequency and resolution. In this work, we quantify the effects of interferers and tissue attenuation on a wireless link for optimal design of future systems. The wireless link consists of an external receiver capable of demodulating FSK/OOK transmission at speeds up to 8 Mbps, with <1e-5 bit-error rate (BER) without error correction, and a fully implanted transmitter consuming about 1.05 mW. The external receiver is tested with the transmitter in vivo to show demodulation efficacy of the transcutaneous link at high data-rates. Transmitter/Receiver link BER is quantified in typical and controlled RF environments for ex vivo and in vivo performance

    A review of the importance of hydraulic residence time on improved design of mine water treatment systems.

    Hydraulic residence time is an important parameter for the design of mine water treatment systems, in particular for wetland system and settlement lagoon. Despite much investigations have been done on system hydraulic residence time, little is still known about how the residence time may relate to treatment system performance. Such an understanding will be useful for improvement of existing treatment system performance and in the design of future systems. Thus, this review attempts to explore this issue on how the assessment of system hydraulic behaviour (of which the residence time), coupled with the assessment of geochemical factors may be incorporated in future design of mine water treatment systems. Review of current design practice for mine water treatment systems in UK applications of passive treatment is also presented. Recommendation for design guidance is discussed to provide some insights into new approach for improved design of such systems

    Accountable: Exploring the Inadequacies of Transparent Financial Practice in the Non-Profit Sector

    Increasingly, governments and organisations publish data on expenditure and finance as 'open' data in order to be more transparent to the public in how funding is spent. Accountable is a web-based tool that visualises and relates open financial data provided by local government and non-profit organisations (NPOs) in the UK. A qualitative study was conducted where Accountable was treated as a technology probe, and used by representatives of NPOs and members of the public who invest their time or effort voluntarily into such organisations. The study highlighted how: current open data sets provided by public bodies are inadequate in their representation of funding structures; the focus on finance and fiscal expenditure in such data makes invisible the in-kind effort of volunteers and the wider beneficiaries of an organisation's work; and problems arising from the interoperability of open data technologies. The paper concludes with implications for the design of future systems, considering the domains of transparency and accountability in relation to the findings

    The Impact of Computing Device Design on Patient-Centered Communication: An Experimental Study

    Prior research has studied the impact of use of a single computing device, such as a desktop or a tablet computer, on patient-provider communication. While some studies have considered how contextual features such as room layout and software interface design affect computer use and patient-provider interaction in the exam room, it is not known how the choice of computing device impacts patient-provider communication. We conducted a within-participant experimental study. Three physicians participated in nine simulated consultations, using a desktop computer, a tablet computer, and a tabletop computer. Consultations were video-recorded and the video data were analyzed using framework analysis. Findings reveal the choice of device impacts the extent to which the consultation is patient-centered. To better support patient-centered communication, a large adjustable horizontal screen can facilitate eye contact and patient engagement. Findings also highlight the need for design of future systems to consider the characteristics of both openness and privacy

    Accountability Work: Examining the Values, Technologies and Work Practices that Facilitate Transparency in Charities

    Charities are subject to stringent transparency and accountability requirements from government and funders to ensure that they are conducting work and spending money appropriately. Charities are increasingly important to civic life and have unique characteristics as organisations. This provides a rich space in which HCI researchers may learn from and affect both held notions of transparency and accountability, and the relationships between these organisations and their stakeholders. We conducted ethnographic fieldwork and workshops over a seven month period at a charity. We aimed to understand how the transparency obligations of a charity manifest through work and how the workers of a charity reason about transparency and accountability as an everyday practice. Our findings highlight how organisations engage in presenting different accounts of their work; how workers view their legal transparency obligations in contrast with their accountability to their everyday community; and how their labour does not translate well to outcome measures or metrics. We discuss implications for the design of future systems that support organisations to produce accounts of their work as part of everyday practice
