flow visualization over the last two decades, a number of challenges remain. Whilst the visualization of 2D flow has many good\ud
solutions, the visualization of 3D flow still poses many problems. Challenges such as domain coverage, speed of computation, and\ud
perception remain key directions for further research. Flow visualization with a focus on surface-based techniques forms the basis\ud
of this literature survey, including surface construction techniques and visualization methods applied to surfaces. We detail our\ud
investigation into these algorithms with discussions of their applicability and their relative strengths and drawbacks. We review the\ud
most important challenges when considering such visualizations. The result is an up-to-date overview of the current state-of-the-art\ud
that highlights both solved and unsolved problems in this rapidly evolving branch of research
The State of the Art in Flow Visualization: Dense and Texture-Based Techniques
Flow visualization has been a very attractive component of scientific visualization research for a long time. Usually very large multivariate datasets require processing. These datasets often consist of a large number of sample locations and several time steps. The steadily increasing performance of computers has recently become a driving factor for a reemergence in flow visualization research, especially in texture-based techniques. In this paper, dense, texture-based flow visualization techniques are discussed. This class of techniques attempts to provide a complete, dense representation of the flow field with high spatio-temporal coherency. An attempt of categorizing closely related solutions is incorporated and presented. Fundamentals are shortly addressed as well as advantages and disadvantages of the methods. Flow charts: visualization of vector fields on arbitrary surfaces
Journal ArticleWe introduce a novel flow visualization method called Flow Charts, which uses a texture atlas approach for the visualization of flows defined over curved surfaces. In this scheme, the surface and its associated flow are segmented into overlapping patches, which are then parameterized and packed in the texture domain. This scheme allows accurate particle advection across multiple charts in the texture domain, providing a flexible framework that supports various flow visualization techniques. The use of surface parameterization enables flow visualization techniques requiring the global view of the surface over long time spans, such as Unsteady Flow LIC (UFLIC), particle-based Unsteady Flow Advection Convolution (UFAC), or dye advection. It also prevents visual artifacts normally associated with view-dependent methods. GeoZui3D: Data Fusion for Interpreting Oceanographic Data
GeoZui3D stands for Geographic Zooming User Interface. It is a new visualization software system designed for interpreting multiple sources of 3D data. The system supports gridded terrain models, triangular meshes, curtain plots, and a number of other display objects. A novel center of workspace interaction method unifies a number of aspects of the interface. It creates a simple viewpoint control method, it helps link multiple views, and is ideal for stereoscopic viewing. GeoZui3D has a number of features to support real-time input. Through a CORBA interface external entities can influence the position and state of objects in the display. Extra windows can be attached to moving objects allowing for their position and data to be monitored. We describe the application of this system for heterogeneous data fusion, for multibeam QC and for ROV/AUV monitoring
