    Online learning of physics during a pandemic: A report from an academic experience in Italy

    The arrival of the Sars-Cov II has opened a new window on teaching physics in academia. Frontal lectures have left space for online teaching, teachers have been faced with a new way of spreading knowledge, adapting contents and modalities of their courses. Students have faced up with a new way of learning physics, which relies on free access to materials and their informatics knowledge. We decided to investigate how online didactics has influenced students’ assessments, motivation, and satisfaction in learning physics during the pandemic in 2020. The research has involved bachelor (n = 53) and master (n = 27) students of the Physics Department at the University of Cagliari (N = 80, 47 male; 33 female). The MANOVA supported significant mean differences about gender and university level with higher values for girls and master students in almost all variables investigated. The path analysis showed that student-student, student-teacher interaction, and the organization of the courses significantly influenced satisfaction and motivation in learning physics. The results of this study can be used to improve the standards of teaching in physics at the University of Cagliar

    Pharmacists as the delivery channel for adherence support in asthma

    Non-adherence to inhaled corticosteroids remains a key challenge in asthma care in the United Kingdom (UK) – it increases healthcare costs, morbidity, and mortality. The growing pressure on UK primary care increased interest in pharmacists as a potential delivery channel for adherence support. However, research on UK pharmacist-led adherence support for asthma is limited. // This thesis addresses the gap in the literature by examining the effectiveness of previous pharmacist-led interventions in improving adherence in adults with asthma (systematic review/meta-analysis, 11 studies), exploring the perspectives of UK pharmacists (online questionnaire, n = 127) and adults with asthma (qualitative study, n = 17) on pharmacist-led adherence support for asthma, and assessing the feasibility and acceptability of a new pharmacist-led adherence support intervention delivered to adults with asthma in general practice (before-and-after study, n = 31). // Previous pharmacist-led interventions significantly improved adherence in adults with asthma (d = 0.49, 95% CI 0.35 – 0.64, p < 0.0001), with effective interventions addressing the ability and motivation to adhere to medication. UK pharmacists reported feeling most confident in and focusing mostly on patient education as adherence support (i.e. ability-related processes). Adults with asthma used their trust in other healthcare professionals (e.g. general practitioners) to gauge their trust in pharmacists. While they were open to pharmacist-led support due to gaps in existing asthma care, they were also concerned about pharmacist competency and role overlap with other healthcare professionals. The new pharmacist-led adherence intervention delivered in general practice demonstrated high acceptability among pharmacists and adults with asthma, but further work is needed to improve the feasibility of the study design. // This research suggests that pharmacist-led adherence support is worth exploring further. With additional adherence-focused support/training for pharmacists and public awareness of pharmacist-led care, UK pharmacists may be able to make a valuable contribution to asthma care

    STS analysis of natural gas development in the United States

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 652-688).Natural gas extraction in the United States in the early 21st century has transformed social, physical, legal and biological landscapes. The technique of hydraulic fracturing, which entails the high-pressure injection into subsurface shale formations of synthetic chemical mixtures, has been viewed by the natural gas industry as a practice of great promise. But there is another side to the story. The first half of this dissertation explores an innovative scientific approach to studying the possible deleterious impacts on human health and the environment of the release of chemicals used in gas extraction. Via participant-observation within a small scientific advocacy organization, The Endocrine Disruption Exchange (TEDX), I follow the development of a database of chemicals used in natural gas extraction, a database that seeks to document not only what these chemicals are (many are proprietary), but also what sorts of bodily and ecological effects these substances may have. I analyze ethnographically how TEDX transformed an information vacuum around fracturing and generated fierce regional and national debates about the public health effects of this activity. The second portion of the dissertation expands TEDX's databasing methodology by reporting on a set of online user-generated databasing and mapping tools developed to interconnect communities encountering the corporate forces and chemical processes animating gas development. Shale gas extraction is an intensive technological practice and requires the delicate calibration of corporate, governmental, and legal apparatuses in order to proceed. The industry operates at county, state, and federal levels, and has in many instances been able to organize regulatory environments suited to rapid and lucrative gas extraction. In the midst of such multi-scalar deterritorializing forces, communities may have little legal or technical recourse if they think that they have been subject to chemical and corporate forces that undermine their financial, bodily, and social security. ExtrAct, a research group I co-founded and directed with artist and technologist Chris Csikszentmihalyi, sought to intervene in these processes by developing a suite of online mapping and databasing tools through which "gas patch" communities could share information, network, study and respond to industry activity across states. Using ExtrAct as an example this dissertation explores how social sciences and the academy at large can invest in developing research tools, methods, and programs designed for non-corporate ends, perhaps redressing in the process the informational and technical imbalances faced by communities dealing with large-scale multinational industries whose infrastructure and impacts are largely invisible to public scrutiny.
