    From 3D Models to 3D Prints: an Overview of the Processing Pipeline

    Due to the wide diffusion of 3D printing technologies, geometric algorithms for Additive Manufacturing are being invented at an impressive speed. Each single step, in particular along the Process Planning pipeline, can now count on dozens of methods that prepare the 3D model for fabrication, while analysing and optimizing geometry and machine instructions for various objectives. This report provides a classification of this huge state of the art, and elicits the relation between each single algorithm and a list of desirable objectives during Process Planning. The objectives themselves are listed and discussed, along with possible needs for tradeoffs. Additive Manufacturing technologies are broadly categorized to explicitly relate classes of devices and supported features.     Segmentation And Spatial Depth Ridge Detection Of Unorganized Point Cloud Data

    Visual 3D data are of interest to a number of fields: medical professionals, game designers, graphic designers, and (in the interest of this paper) ichthyologists interested in the taxonomy of fish. Since the release of the Kinect for the Microsoft XBox, game designers have been interested in using the 3D data returned by the device to understand human movement and translate that movement into an interface with which to interact with game systems. In the medical field, researchers must use computer vision tools to navigate through the data found in CT scans and MRI scans. These tools must segment images into the parts that are relevant to researchers and account for noise related to the scanning process all while ignoring other types of noise such as foreign elements in the body that might indicate signs of illness. 3D point cloud data represents some unique challenges. Consider an object scanned with a laser scanner. The scanner returns the surface points of the object, but nothing more. Using the tool Qhull, a researcher can quickly compute the convex hull of an object (which is an interesting challenge in itself), but the convex hull (obviously) leaves out any description of an object\u27s concave features. Several algorithms have been proposed to illustrate an object\u27s complete features based on unorganized 3D point cloud data as accurately as possible, most notably Boissonnat\u27s tetrahedral culling algorithm and The Power Crust algorithm. We introduce a new approach to the area partitioning problem that takes into consideration these algorithms\u27 strengths and weaknesses. In this paper we propose a methodology for approximating a shape\u27s solid geometry using the unorganized 3D point cloud data of that shape primarily by utilizing localized principal component analysis information. Our model accounts for three comissues that arise in the scanning of 3D objects: noise in surface points, poorly sampled surface area, and narrow corners. We explore each of these areas of concern and outline our approach to each. Our technique uses a growing algorithm that labels points as it progresses and uses those labels with a simple priority queue. We found that our approach works especially well for approximating surfaces under the condition where a local surface is poorly sampled (i.e a significant hole is present in the point cloud). We then turn to study the medial axis of a shape for the purposes of `unfolding\u27 that structure. Our approach uses a ridge formulation based on the spatial depth statistic to create the medial axis. We conclude the paper with visual results of our technique

    Enhancing cardiac image segmentation through persistent homology regularization

Deep learning-based segmentation methods could help to reduce their severity by aiding in early diagnosing but high levels of accuracy are necessary. The vast majority of methods focus on correcting local errors and miss the global picture. To ad- dress this issue, researchers have developed techniques that incorporate global context and consider the relationships between pixels. Here, we apply persistent homology, a branch of topology that studies the topological structure of shapes, along with deep learning methods to improve the heart segmentation. We use multidimensional topological losses to avoid spurious components and holes and increase the total accuracy. We evaluate the performance of three different approaches: using the dice and pixel-wise losses with the sum of persistences of label diagrams as a regularizer, using the dice and pixel-wise losses with the bottleneck distance as a regularizer, and using both losses without any regularization. We find that, while more computationally demanding, the methods using topological regularizers outperform the other method in terms of accuracy

    Väitekirja elektrooniline versioon ei sisalda publikatsiooneVirtuaalne riiete proovimine on üks põhilistest teenustest, mille pakkumine võib suurendada rõivapoodide edukust, sest tänu sellele lahendusele väheneb füüsilise töö vajadus proovimise faasis ning riiete proovimine muutub kasutaja jaoks mugavamaks. Samas pole enamikel varem välja pakutud masinnägemise ja graafika meetoditel õnnestunud inimkeha realistlik modelleerimine, eriti terve keha 3D modelleerimine, mis vajab suurt kogust andmeid ja palju arvutuslikku ressurssi. Varasemad katsed on ebaõnnestunud põhiliselt seetõttu, et ei ole suudetud korralikult arvesse võtta samaaegseid muutusi keha pinnal. Lisaks pole varasemad meetodid enamasti suutnud kujutiste liikumisi realistlikult reaalajas visualiseerida. Käesolev projekt kavatseb kõrvaldada eelmainitud puudused nii, et rahuldada virtuaalse proovikabiini vajadusi. Välja pakutud meetod seisneb nii kasutaja keha kui ka riiete skaneerimises, analüüsimises, modelleerimises, mõõtmete arvutamises, orientiiride paigutamises, mannekeenidelt võetud 3D visuaalsete andmete segmenteerimises ning riiete mudeli paigutamises ja visualiseerimises kasutaja kehal. Selle projekti käigus koguti visuaalseid andmeid kasutades 3D laserskannerit ja Kinecti optilist kaamerat ning koostati nendest andmebaas. Neid andmeid kasutati välja töötatud algoritmide testimiseks, mis peamiselt tegelevad riiete realistliku visuaalse kujutamisega inimkehal ja suuruse pakkumise süsteemi täiendamisega virtuaalse proovikabiini kontekstis.Virtual fitting constitutes a fundamental element of the developments expected to rise the commercial prosperity of online garment retailers to a new level, as it is expected to reduce the load of the manual labor and physical efforts required. Nevertheless, most of the previously proposed computer vision and graphics methods have failed to accurately and realistically model the human body, especially, when it comes to the 3D modeling of the whole human body. The failure is largely related to the huge data and calculations required, which in reality is caused mainly by inability to properly account for the simultaneous variations in the body surface. In addition, most of the foregoing techniques cannot render realistic movement representations in real-time. This project intends to overcome the aforementioned shortcomings so as to satisfy the requirements of a virtual fitting room. The proposed methodology consists in scanning and performing some specific analyses of both the user's body and the prospective garment to be virtually fitted, modeling, extracting measurements and assigning reference points on them, and segmenting the 3D visual data imported from the mannequins. Finally, superimposing, adopting and depicting the resulting garment model on the user's body. The project is intended to gather sufficient amounts of visual data using a 3D laser scanner and the Kinect optical camera, to manage it in form of a usable database, in order to experimentally implement the algorithms devised. The latter will provide a realistic visual representation of the garment on the body, and enhance the size-advisor system in the context of the virtual fitting room under study
