Carrier frequency offset recovery for zero-IF OFDM receivers
As trends in broadband wireless communications applications demand faster development cycles, smaller sizes, lower costs, and ever increasing data rates, engineers continually seek new ways to harness evolving technology. The zero intermediate frequency receiver architecture has now become popular as it has both economic and size advantages over the traditional superheterodyne architecture.
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular multi-carrier modulation technique with the ability to provide high data rates over echo ladened channels. It has excellent robustness to impairments caused by multipath, which includes frequency selective fading. Unfortunately, OFDM is very sensitive to the carrier frequency offset (CFO) that is introduced by the downconversion process. The objective of this thesis is to develop and to analyze an algorithm for blind CFO recovery suitable for use with a practical zero-Intermediate Frequency (zero-IF) OFDM telecommunications system.
A blind CFO recovery algorithm based upon characteristics of the received signal's power spectrum is proposed. The algorithm's error performance is mathematically analyzed, and the theoretical results are verified with simulations. Simulation shows that the performance of the proposed algorithm agrees with the mathematical analysis.
A number of other CFO recovery techniques are compared to the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm performs well in comparison and does not suffer from many of the disadvantages of existing blind CFO recovery techniques. Most notably, its performance is not significantly degraded by noisy, frequency selective channels
An Analytical Model for the Hybrid PQ-WFQ Scheduling Scheme for WiMAX Networks
Abstract-The provisioning of differentiated QoS is an important objective in the design and implementation of IEEE 802.16/WiMAX-based broadband wireless networks. To this end, the hybrid scheduling mechanism that combines various fundamental scheduling principles, e.g., priority queueing (PQ), earliest deadline first (EDF), weight fair queue (WFQ), and round robin (RR) within a hierarchical structure for bandwidth and buffer sharing has been proposed to support the differential QoS requirements in WiMAX networks. This paper proposes analytical models for the hybrid scheduling scheme that integrates PQ and WFQ in the presence of non-bursty Poisson arrival process and bursty Markov Modulate Poisson Process (MMPP), respectively. We derive the expressions for the performance metrics including the mean number of packets in the queue, throughput, mean queueing delay and packet loss probability, and fairness of individual traffic flows. The model is adopted to investigate the effects of the weight of the WFQ policy and traffic burstiness on the performance of the hybrid scheduling system
Smart PIN: performance and cost-oriented context-aware personal information network
The next generation of networks will involve interconnection of heterogeneous individual
networks such as WPAN, WLAN, WMAN and Cellular network, adopting the IP as common infrastructural protocol and providing virtually always-connected network. Furthermore,
there are many devices which enable easy acquisition and storage of information as pictures, movies, emails, etc. Therefore, the information overload and divergent contentâs
characteristics make it difficult for users to handle their data in manual way. Consequently, there is a need for personalised automatic services which would enable data exchange across heterogeneous network and devices. To support these personalised services, user centric approaches
for data delivery across the heterogeneous network are also required.
In this context, this thesis proposes Smart PIN - a novel performance and cost-oriented context-aware Personal Information Network. Smart PIN's architecture is detailed including its network, service and management components. Within the service component, two novel schemes for efficient delivery of context and content data are proposed:
Multimedia Data Replication Scheme (MDRS) and Quality-oriented Algorithm for Multiple-source Multimedia Delivery (QAMMD).
MDRS supports efficient data accessibility among distributed devices using data replication which is based on a utility function and a minimum data set. QAMMD employs a buffer underflow avoidance scheme for streaming, which achieves high multimedia quality without content adaptation to network conditions. Simulation models for MDRS and
QAMMD were built which are based on various heterogeneous network scenarios. Additionally a multiple-source streaming based on QAMMS was implemented as a prototype and tested in an emulated network environment. Comparative tests show that MDRS and QAMMD perform significantly better than other approaches

Application priority framework for fixed mobile converged communication networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The current prospects in wired and wireless access networks, it is becoming increasingly important to address potential convergence in order to offer integrated broadband services. These systems will need to offer higher data transmission capacities and long battery life, which is the catalyst for an everincreasing variety of air interface technologies targeting local area to wide area connectivity. Current integrated industrial networks do not offer application aware context delivery and enhanced services for optimised networks. Application aware services provide value-added functionality to business applications by capturing, integrating, and consolidating intelligence about users and their endpoint devices from various points in the network. This thesis mainly intends to resolve the issues related to ubiquitous application aware service, fair allocation of radio access, reduced energy consumption and improved capacity. A technique that measures and evaluates the data rate demand to reduce application response time and queuing delay for multi radio interfaces is proposed. The technique overcomes the challenges of network integration, requiring no user intervention, saving battery life and selecting the radio access connection for the application requested by the end user. This study is split in two parts. The first contribution identifies some constraints of the services towards the application layer in terms of e.g. data rate and signal strength. The objectives are achieved by application controlled handover (ACH) mechanism in order to maintain acceptable data rate for real-time application services. It also looks into the impact of the radio link on the application and identifies elements and parameters like wireless link quality and handover that will influence the application type. It also identifies some enhanced traditional mechanisms such as distance controlled multihop and mesh topology required in order to support energy efficient multimedia applications. The second contribution unfolds an intelligent application priority assignment mechanism (IAPAM) for medical applications using wireless sensor networks. IAPAM proposes and evaluates a technique based on prioritising multiple virtual queues for the critical nature of medical data to improve instant transmission. Various mobility patterns (directed, controlled and random waypoint) has been investigated and compared by simulating IAPAM enabled mobile BWSN. The following topics have been studied, modelled, simulated and discussed in this thesis: 1. Application Controlled Handover (ACH) for multi radios over fibre 2. Power Controlled Scheme for mesh multi radios over fibre using ACH 3. IAPAM for Biomedical Wireless Sensor Networks (BWSN) and impact of mobility over IAPAM enabled BWSN. Extensive simulation studies are performed to analyze and to evaluate the proposed techniques. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements in multi radios over fibre performance in terms of application response delay and power consumption by upto 75% and 15 % respectively, reduction in traffic loss by upto 53% and reduction in delay for real time application by more than 25% in some cases
Detection of OFDM Signals Using Pilot Tones and Applications to Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Systems
Nowadays there are an increasing number of wireless devices which support wireless networking and the need for higher data rate communication is increasing rabidly. As more and more systems go wireless, approaching technologies will face spectral crowding and existence of wireless devices will be an important issue. Because of the limited bandwidth availability, accepting the request for higher capacity and data rates is a challenging task, demanding advanced technologies that can offers new methods of using the available radio spectrum. Cognitive radio introduces a key solution to the spectral increasing issue by presenting the opportunistic usage of spectrum that is not heavily occupied by licensed users. It is a latest idea in wireless communications systems which objective to have more adaptive and aware communication devices which can make better use of available natural resources.
Cognitive radio appears to be an attractive solution to the spectral congestion problem by introducing the notion of opportunistic spectrum use. Cognitive radios can operate as a secondary systems on top of existence system which are called primary (or licensed) systems. In this case, secondary (cognitive) users need to detect the unused spectrum in order to be able to access it. Because of its many advantages, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been successfully used in numerous wireless standards and technologies.
It\u27s shown that OFDM will play an important role in realizing the cognitive radio concept as well by providing a proven, scalable, and adaptive technology for air interface. Researches show that OFDM technique is considered as a candidate for cognitive radio systems.
The objective of this dissertation is to explore detecting of OFDM modulated signals using pilot tones information. Specifically we applying Time-Domain Symbol Cross-Correlation (TDSC) method in the confect of actual 4G wireless standards such as WIMAX and LTE. This detection is only based upon the knowledge of pilot structures without knowledge of received signal so that, it can be performed on every portion of the received signal. The approach induces Cross-Correlation between pilots subcarriers and exploits the deterministic and periodic characteristics of pilot mapping in the time frequency domain
