    Fine-grained sketch-based image retrieval by matching deformable part models

An important characteristic of sketches, compared with text, rests with their ability to intrinsically capture object appearance and structure. Nonetheless, akin to traditional text-based image retrieval, conventional sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) principally focuses on retrieving images of the same category, neglecting the fine-grained characteristics of sketches. In this paper, we advocate the expressiveness of sketches and examine their efficacy under a novel fine-grained SBIR framework. In particular, we study how sketches enable fine-grained retrieval within object categories. Key to this problem is introducing a mid-level sketch representation that not only captures object pose, but also possesses the ability to traverse sketch and image domains. Specifically, we learn deformable part-based model (DPM) as a mid-level representation to discover and encode the various poses in sketch and image domains independently, after which graph matching is performed on DPMs to establish pose correspondences across the two domains. We further propose an SBIR dataset that covers the unique aspects of fine-grained SBIR. Through in-depth experiments, we demonstrate the superior performance of our SBIR framework, and showcase its unique ability in fine-grained retrieval

    Indirect Image Registration with Large Diffeomorphic Deformations

    The paper adapts the large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping framework for image registration to the indirect setting where a template is registered against a target that is given through indirect noisy observations. The registration uses diffeomorphisms that transform the template through a (group) action. These diffeomorphisms are generated by solving a flow equation that is defined by a velocity field with certain regularity. The theoretical analysis includes a proof that indirect image registration has solutions (existence) that are stable and that converge as the data error tends so zero, so it becomes a well-defined regularization method.     Deformable Model Retrieval Based on Topological and Geometric Signatures

    With the increasing popularity of 3D applications such as computer games, a lot of 3D geometry models are being created. To encourage sharing and reuse, techniques that support matching and retrieval of these models are emerging. However, only a few of them can handle deformable models, i.e., models of different poses, and these methods are generally very slow. In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient matching and retrieval of 3D deformable models. Our research idea stresses on using both topological and geometric features at the same time. First, we propose Topological Point Ring (TPR) analysis to locate reliable topological points and rings. Second, we capture both local and global geometric information to characterize each of these topological features. To compare the similarity of two models, we adapt the Earth Mover Distance (EMD) as the distance function, and construct an indexing tree to accelerate the retrieval process. We demonstrate the performance of the new method, both in terms of accuracy and speed, through a large number of experiments

    Learning shape correspondence with anisotropic convolutional neural networks

    Establishing correspondence between shapes is a fundamental problem in geometry processing, arising in a wide variety of applications. The problem is especially difficult in the setting of non-isometric deformations, as well as in the presence of topological noise and missing parts, mainly due to the limited capability to model such deformations axiomatically. Several recent works showed that invariance to complex shape transformations can be learned from examples. In this paper, we introduce an intrinsic convolutional neural network architecture based on anisotropic diffusion kernels, which we term Anisotropic Convolutional Neural Network (ACNN). In our construction, we generalize convolutions to non-Euclidean domains by constructing a set of oriented anisotropic diffusion kernels, creating in this way a local intrinsic polar representation of the data (`patch'), which is then correlated with a filter. Several cascades of such filters, linear, and non-linear operators are stacked to form a deep neural network whose parameters are learned by minimizing a task-specific cost. We use ACNNs to effectively learn intrinsic dense correspondences between deformable shapes in very challenging settings, achieving state-of-the-art results on some of the most difficult recent correspondence benchmarks

    Deformable meshes for shape recovery: models and applications

    With the advance of scanning and imaging technology, more and more 3D objects become available. Among them, deformable objects have gained increasing interests. They include medical instances such as organs, a sequence of objects in motion, and objects of similar shapes where a meaningful correspondence can be established between each other. Thus, it requires tools to store, compare, and retrieve them. Many of these operations depend on successful shape recovery. Shape recovery is the task to retrieve an object from the environment where its geometry is hidden or implicitly known. As a simple and versatile tool, mesh is widely used in computer graphics for modelling and visualization. In particular, deformable meshes are meshes which can take the deformation of deformable objects. They extend the modelling ability of meshes. This dissertation focuses on using deformable meshes to approach the 3D shape recovery problem. Several models are presented to solve the challenges for shape recovery under different circumstances. When the object is hidden in an image, a PDE deformable model is designed to extract its surface shape. The algorithm uses a mesh representation so that it can model any non-smooth surface with an arbitrary precision compared to a parametric model. It is more computational efficient than a level-set approach. When the explicit geometry of the object is known but is hidden in a bank of shapes, we simplify the deformation of the model to a graph matching procedure through a hierarchical surface abstraction approach. The framework is used for shape matching and retrieval. This idea is further extended to retain the explicit geometry during the abstraction. A novel motion abstraction framework for deformable meshes is devised based on clustering of local transformations and is successfully applied to 3D motion compression
