Combining Artificial Intelligence with Traditional Chinese Medicine for Intelligent Health Management

    Get PDF
The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is being referred to as the beginning of "the fourth industrial revolution". With the rapid development of hardware, algorithms, and applications, AI not only provides a new concept and relevant solutions to solve the problem of complexity science but also provides a new concept and method to promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this study, based on the research and development of AI technology applications in biomedical and clinical diagnosis and treatment, we introduce AI technologies in current TCM research. This can have applications in intelligent clinical information acquisition, intelligent clinical decision, and efficacy evaluation of TCM; intelligent classification management, intelligent prescription, and drug research in Chinese herbal medicine; and health management. Furthermore, we propose a framework of "intelligent TCM" and outline its development prospects

    Knowledge-based Biomedical Data Science 2019

Knowledge-based biomedical data science (KBDS) involves the design and implementation of computer systems that act as if they knew about biomedicine. Such systems depend on formally represented knowledge in computer systems, often in the form of knowledge graphs. Here we survey the progress in the last year in systems that use formally represented knowledge to address data science problems in both clinical and biological domains, as well as on approaches for creating knowledge graphs. Major themes include the relationships between knowledge graphs and machine learning, the use of natural language processing, and the expansion of knowledge-based approaches to novel domains, such as Chinese Traditional Medicine and biodiversity.Comment: Manuscript 43 pages with 3 tables; Supplemental material 43 pages with 3 table

Creating Trustworthy LLMs: Dealing with Hallucinations in Healthcare AI

Large language models have proliferated across multiple domains in as short period of time. There is however hesitation in the medical and healthcare domain towards their adoption because of issues like factuality, coherence, and hallucinations. Give the high stakes nature of healthcare, many researchers have even cautioned against its usage until these issues are resolved. The key to the implementation and deployment of LLMs in healthcare is to make these models trustworthy, transparent (as much possible) and explainable. In this paper we describe the key elements in creating reliable, trustworthy, and unbiased models as a necessary condition for their adoption in healthcare. Specifically we focus on the quantification, validation, and mitigation of hallucinations in the context in healthcare. Lastly, we discuss how the future of LLMs in healthcare may look like

In recent years, ophthalmology has advanced significantly, thanks to rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have emerged as powerful tools for natural language processing. This paper finally includes 108 studies, and explores LLMs’ potential in the next generation of AI in ophthalmology. The results encompass a diverse range of studies in the field of ophthalmology, highlighting the versatile applications of LLMs. Subfields encompass general ophthalmology, retinal diseases, anterior segment diseases, glaucoma, and ophthalmic plastics. Results show LLMs’ competence in generating informative and contextually relevant responses, potentially reducing diagnostic errors and improving patient outcomes. Overall, this study highlights LLMs’ promising role in shaping AI’s future in ophthalmology. By leveraging AI, ophthalmologists can access a wealth of information, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and provide better patient care. Despite challenges, continued AI advancements and ongoing research will pave the way for the next generation of AI-assisted ophthalmic practices
