Multi-Modal Multi-Scale Deep Learning for Large-Scale Image Annotation
Image annotation aims to annotate a given image with a variable number of
class labels corresponding to diverse visual concepts. In this paper, we
address two main issues in large-scale image annotation: 1) how to learn a rich
feature representation suitable for predicting a diverse set of visual concepts
ranging from object, scene to abstract concept; 2) how to annotate an image
with the optimal number of class labels. To address the first issue, we propose
a novel multi-scale deep model for extracting rich and discriminative features
capable of representing a wide range of visual concepts. Specifically, a novel
two-branch deep neural network architecture is proposed which comprises a very
deep main network branch and a companion feature fusion network branch designed
for fusing the multi-scale features computed from the main branch. The deep
model is also made multi-modal by taking noisy user-provided tags as model
input to complement the image input. For tackling the second issue, we
introduce a label quantity prediction auxiliary task to the main label
prediction task to explicitly estimate the optimal label number for a given
image. Extensive experiments are carried out on two large-scale image
annotation benchmark datasets and the results show that our method
significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art.Comment: Submited to IEEE TI
Deep Multi-instance Networks with Sparse Label Assignment for Whole Mammogram Classification
Mammogram classification is directly related to computer-aided diagnosis of
breast cancer. Traditional methods rely on regions of interest (ROIs) which
require great efforts to annotate. Inspired by the success of using deep
convolutional features for natural image analysis and multi-instance learning
(MIL) for labeling a set of instances/patches, we propose end-to-end trained
deep multi-instance networks for mass classification based on whole mammogram
without the aforementioned ROIs. We explore three different schemes to
construct deep multi-instance networks for whole mammogram classification.
Experimental results on the INbreast dataset demonstrate the robustness of
proposed networks compared to previous work using segmentation and detection
annotations.Comment: MICCAI 2017 Camera Read
Semantic Instance Annotation of Street Scenes by 3D to 2D Label Transfer
Semantic annotations are vital for training models for object recognition,
semantic segmentation or scene understanding. Unfortunately, pixelwise
annotation of images at very large scale is labor-intensive and only little
labeled data is available, particularly at instance level and for street
scenes. In this paper, we propose to tackle this problem by lifting the
semantic instance labeling task from 2D into 3D. Given reconstructions from
stereo or laser data, we annotate static 3D scene elements with rough bounding
primitives and develop a model which transfers this information into the image
domain. We leverage our method to obtain 2D labels for a novel suburban video
dataset which we have collected, resulting in 400k semantic and instance image
annotations. A comparison of our method to state-of-the-art label transfer
baselines reveals that 3D information enables more efficient annotation while
at the same time resulting in improved accuracy and time-coherent labels.Comment: 10 pages in Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition

Weakly- and Semi-Supervised Panoptic Segmentation
We present a weakly supervised model that jointly performs both semantic- and
instance-segmentation -- a particularly relevant problem given the substantial
cost of obtaining pixel-perfect annotation for these tasks. In contrast to many
popular instance segmentation approaches based on object detectors, our method
does not predict any overlapping instances. Moreover, we are able to segment
both "thing" and "stuff" classes, and thus explain all the pixels in the image.
"Thing" classes are weakly-supervised with bounding boxes, and "stuff" with
image-level tags. We obtain state-of-the-art results on Pascal VOC, for both
full and weak supervision (which achieves about 95% of fully-supervised
performance). Furthermore, we present the first weakly-supervised results on
Cityscapes for both semantic- and instance-segmentation. Finally, we use our
weakly supervised framework to analyse the relationship between annotation
quality and predictive performance, which is of interest to dataset creators.Comment: ECCV 2018. The first two authors contributed equall
Zero-Annotation Object Detection with Web Knowledge Transfer
Object detection is one of the major problems in computer vision, and has
been extensively studied. Most of the existing detection works rely on
labor-intensive supervision, such as ground truth bounding boxes of objects or
at least image-level annotations. On the contrary, we propose an object
detection method that does not require any form of human annotation on target
tasks, by exploiting freely available web images. In order to facilitate
effective knowledge transfer from web images, we introduce a multi-instance
multi-label domain adaption learning framework with two key innovations. First
of all, we propose an instance-level adversarial domain adaptation network with
attention on foreground objects to transfer the object appearances from web
domain to target domain. Second, to preserve the class-specific semantic
structure of transferred object features, we propose a simultaneous transfer
mechanism to transfer the supervision across domains through pseudo strong
label generation. With our end-to-end framework that simultaneously learns a
weakly supervised detector and transfers knowledge across domains, we achieved
significant improvements over baseline methods on the benchmark datasets.Comment: Accepted in ECCV 201
Learning Deep Latent Spaces for Multi-Label Classification
Multi-label classification is a practical yet challenging task in machine
learning related fields, since it requires the prediction of more than one
label category for each input instance. We propose a novel deep neural networks
(DNN) based model, Canonical Correlated AutoEncoder (C2AE), for solving this
task. Aiming at better relating feature and label domain data for improved
classification, we uniquely perform joint feature and label embedding by
deriving a deep latent space, followed by the introduction of label-correlation
sensitive loss function for recovering the predicted label outputs. Our C2AE is
achieved by integrating the DNN architectures of canonical correlation analysis
and autoencoder, which allows end-to-end learning and prediction with the
ability to exploit label dependency. Moreover, our C2AE can be easily extended
to address the learning problem with missing labels. Our experiments on
multiple datasets with different scales confirm the effectiveness and
robustness of our proposed method, which is shown to perform favorably against
state-of-the-art methods for multi-label classification.Comment: published in AAAI-201
The Cityscapes Dataset for Semantic Urban Scene Understanding
Visual understanding of complex urban street scenes is an enabling factor for
a wide range of applications. Object detection has benefited enormously from
large-scale datasets, especially in the context of deep learning. For semantic
urban scene understanding, however, no current dataset adequately captures the
complexity of real-world urban scenes.
To address this, we introduce Cityscapes, a benchmark suite and large-scale
dataset to train and test approaches for pixel-level and instance-level
semantic labeling. Cityscapes is comprised of a large, diverse set of stereo
video sequences recorded in streets from 50 different cities. 5000 of these
images have high quality pixel-level annotations; 20000 additional images have
coarse annotations to enable methods that leverage large volumes of
weakly-labeled data. Crucially, our effort exceeds previous attempts in terms
of dataset size, annotation richness, scene variability, and complexity. Our
accompanying empirical study provides an in-depth analysis of the dataset
characteristics, as well as a performance evaluation of several
state-of-the-art approaches based on our benchmark.Comment: Includes supplemental materia
