    The analysis of breathing and rhythm in speech

    Speech rhythm can be described as the temporal patterning by which speech events, such as vocalic onsets, occur. Despite efforts to quantify and model speech rhythm across languages, it remains a scientifically enigmatic aspect of prosody. For instance, one challenge lies in determining how to best quantify and analyse speech rhythm. Techniques range from manual phonetic annotation to the automatic extraction of acoustic features. It is currently unclear how closely these differing approaches correspond to one another. Moreover, the primary means of speech rhythm research has been the analysis of the acoustic signal only. Investigations of speech rhythm may instead benefit from a range of complementary measures, including physiological recordings, such as of respiratory effort. This thesis therefore combines acoustic recording with inductive plethysmography (breath belts) to capture temporal characteristics of speech and speech breathing rhythms. The first part examines the performance of existing phonetic and algorithmic techniques for acoustic prosodic analysis in a new corpus of rhythmically diverse English and Mandarin speech. The second part addresses the need for an automatic speech breathing annotation technique by developing a novel function that is robust to the noisy plethysmography typical of spontaneous, naturalistic speech production. These methods are then applied in the following section to the analysis of English speech and speech breathing in a second, larger corpus. Finally, behavioural experiments were conducted to investigate listeners' perception of speech breathing using a novel gap detection task. The thesis establishes the feasibility, as well as limits, of automatic methods in comparison to manual annotation. In the speech breathing corpus analysis, they help show that speakers maintain a normative, yet contextually adaptive breathing style during speech. The perception experiments in turn demonstrate that listeners are sensitive to the violation of these speech breathing norms, even if unconsciously so. The thesis concludes by underscoring breathing as a necessary, yet often overlooked, component in speech rhythm planning and production

    A Survey on Emotion Recognition for Human Robot Interaction

    With the recent developments of technology and the advances in artificial intelligent and machine learning techniques, it becomes possible for the robot to acquire and show the emotions as a part of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). An emotional robot can recognize the emotional states of humans so that it will be able to interact more naturally with its human counterpart in different environments. In this article, a survey on emotion recognition for HRI systems has been presented. The survey aims to achieve two objectives. Firstly, it aims to discuss the main challenges that face researchers when building emotional HRI systems. Secondly, it seeks to identify sensing channels that can be used to detect emotions and provides a literature review about recent researches published within each channel, along with the used methodologies and achieved results. Finally, some of the existing emotion recognition issues and recommendations for future works have been outlined

    Mindfulness in Everyday Life: An Empirical Study of Mindfulness as it is Experienced in Ordinary Life among Long-Term \u3cem\u3eVipassana\u3c/em\u3e Practitioners

    This phenomenological look at the experience of mindfulness in everyday life situations is framed against the background of traditional Theravadin Buddhist descriptions and contemporary Western psychoanalytic ideas of the experience of mindfulness. The research laid out by Pollio, Henley, and Thompson (1997) and by Thomas and Pollio (2002) was used. In-depth, open-ended interviews are conducted with none participants who were judged to have stable, long-term (four years or longer) vipassana meditation practices, as determined by three full-time vipassana teachers. The emergent thematic structure includes six major themes and several subthemes: (1) Present and Aware, (2) Spacious and Open, including subthemes, (a) Spacious and (b) Open (Not Judging), (3) Clear and Knowing, with subthemes (a) Alive and Embodied, (b) Seeing Clearly, and (c) Knowing Wisdom, (4) Not Separate (Connected), (5) Not Identified (Self-less), and (6) Free, including subthemes (a) Freedom and (b) Choice. Additional results include relationships among the themes and three non-thematic aspects that relate to the experience of mindfulness over time: (1) Mindfulness Comes and Goes, (2) Facilitating Factors, and (3) Changes Over Time. This work empirically validates the experience of mindfulness as described in the Buddhist literature and the psychological literature although interesting differences in emphasis were found among the three perspectives: traditional, psychological, and first-person participant accounts. It is my hope that this study will further understanding of mindfulness from both theoretical and practical perspectives

    EXPLORING THE MIDDLE PATH: EFFECTS OF ETHICAL AND SECULAR MINDFULNESS ON WELL-BEING AND PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

    Mainstream mindfulness programs generally remove Buddhist ethics, causing some to worry they may encourage self-indulgence and have limited capacity to promote well-being. We compare the effects of secular and ethical mindfulness (incorporating principles of non-harm and interdependence) on well-being and prosocial behaviour. Participants (N = 621) completed six days of ethical or secular mindfulness or active control exercises. Secular and ethical mindfulness practices both reduced stress and self-image concerns, and increased life satisfaction and self-awareness. Ethical mindfulness also enhanced personal growth. Participants were also invited to donate to a charity. Both mindfulness practices potentiated effects of trait empathy on behaviour: Trait empathy predicted donation amounts for mindfulness participants but not controls. Ethical, relative to secular, mindfulness also increased donation amounts. Within this pattern, low trait empathy participants gave less money following secular mindfulness than control exercises. Mindfulness training may thus have unintended consequences, making some people less charitable, though incorporating ethics may forestall such effects

    This post-qualitative study branching from new-materialist, post-humanist epistemology and ontology examines relationality through the lens of three different theories: agential realism, John Shotter’s communication theory, and relational mindfulness. These theories each describe the dynamics involved in relationships, how they each make sense of these dynamics, and what they entail for human relations. Using a post-qualitative diffractive methodology, this study examines these theories and how they intersect to bring about new insights in our understanding of relationships and how this information can support therapy practice. The results are a series of nine principles of orientation, which were applied to marriage and family therapy and the therapeutic encounter. I conclude with a discussion on historical and current work in the field of MFT that connects to these ideas and the possibilities for future directions

    Sensor-based artificial intelligence to support people with cognitive and physical disorders

    A substantial portion of the world's population deals with disability. Many disabled people do not have equal access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, do not receive specific disability-related services, and experience exclusion from everyday life activities. One way to face these issues is through the use of healthcare technologies. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of diverse and heterogeneous disabilities, which require ad-hoc and personalized solutions. Moreover, the design and implementation of effective and efficient technologies is a complex and expensive process involving challenging issues, including usability and acceptability. The work presented in this thesis aims to improve the current state of technologies available to support people with disorders affecting the mind or the motor system by proposing the use of sensors coupled with signal processing methods and artificial intelligence algorithms. The first part of the thesis focused on mental state monitoring. We investigated the application of a low-cost portable electroencephalography sensor and supervised learning methods to evaluate a person's attention. Indeed, the analysis of attention has several purposes, including the diagnosis and rehabilitation of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A novel dataset was collected from volunteers during an image annotation task, and used for the experimental evaluation using different machine learning techniques. Then, in the second part of the thesis, we focused on addressing limitations related to motor disability. We introduced the use of graph neural networks to process high-density electromyography data for upper limbs amputees’ movement/grasping intention recognition for enabling the use of robotic prostheses. High-density electromyography sensors can simultaneously acquire electromyography signals from different parts of the muscle, providing a large amount of spatio-temporal information that needs to be properly exploited to improve recognition accuracy. The investigation of the approach was conducted using a recent real-world dataset consisting of electromyography signals collected from 20 volunteers while performing 65 different gestures. In the final part of the thesis, we developed a prototype of a versatile interactive system that can be useful to people with different types of disabilities. The system can maintain a food diary for frail people with nutrition problems, such as people with neurocognitive diseases or frail elderly people, which may have difficulties due to forgetfulness or physical issues. The novel architecture automatically recognizes the preparation of food at home, in a privacy-preserving and unobtrusive way, exploiting air quality data acquired from a commercial sensor, statistical features extraction, and a deep neural network. A robotic system prototype is used to simplify the interaction with the inhabitant. For this work, a large dataset of annotated sensor data acquired over a period of 8 months from different individuals in different homes was collected. Overall, the results achieved in the thesis are promising, and pave the way for several real-world implementations and future research directions
