Integration with Ontologies
One of today’s hottest IT topics is integration, as bringing together information from different sources and structures is not completely solved. The approach outlined here wants to illustrate how ontologies [Gr93] could help to support the integration process
Complex Event Processing (CEP)
Event-driven information systems demand a systematic and automatic processing of events. Complex Event Processing (CEP) encompasses methods, techniques, and tools for processing events while they occur, i.e., in a continuous and timely fashion. CEP derives valuable higher-level knowledge from lower-level events; this knowledge takes the form of so called complex events, that is, situations that can only be recognized as a combination of several events. 1 Application Areas Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Event-Driven Architecture (EDA), cost-reductions in sensor technology and the monitoring of IT systems due to legal, contractual, or operational concerns have lead to a significantly increased generation of events in computer systems in recent years. This development is accompanied by a demand to manage and process these events in an automatic, systematic, and timely fashion. Important application areas for Complex Event Processing (CEP) are the following
Visualization of database structures for information retrieval
This paper describes the Book House system, which is designed to support children's information retrieval in libraries as part of their education. It is a shareware program available on CD‐ROM or floppy disks, and comprises functionality for database searching as well as for classifying and storing book information in the database. The system concept is based on an understanding of children's domain structures and their capabilities for categorization of information needs in connection with their activities in schools, in school libraries or in public libraries. These structures are visualized in the interface by using metaphors and multimedia technology. Through the use of text, images and animation, the Book House encourages children ‐ even at a very early age ‐ to learn by doing in an enjoyable way, which plays on their previous experiences with computer games. Both words and pictures can be used for searching; this makes the system suitable for all age groups. Even children who have not yet learned to read properly can, by selecting pictures, search for and find those books they would like to have read aloud. Thus, at the very beginning of their school life, they can learn to search for books on their own. For the library community, such a system will provide an extended service which will increase the number of children's own searches and also improve the relevance, quality and utilization of the book collections in the libraries. A market research report on the need for an annual indexing service for books in the Book House format is in preparation by the Danish Library Centre A/S
What Isn’t Obvious about ‘obvious’: A Data-driven Approach to Philosophy of Logic
It is often said that ‘every logical truth is obvious’ (Quine 1970: 82), that the ‘axioms and rules of logic are true in an obvious way’ (Murawski 2014: 87), or that ‘logic is a theory of the obvious’ (Sher 1999: 207). In this chapter, I set out to test empirically how the idea that logic is obvious is reflected in the scholarly work of logicians and philosophers of logic. My approach is data-driven. That is to say, I propose that systematically searching for patterns of usage in databases of scholarly works, such as JSTOR, can provide new insights into the ways in which the idea that logic is obvious is reflected in logical and philosophical practice, i.e., in the arguments that logicians and philosophers of logic actually make in their published work
Logic Negation with Spiking Neural P Systems
Nowadays, the success of neural networks as reasoning systems is doubtless.
Nonetheless, one of the drawbacks of such reasoning systems is that they work
as black-boxes and the acquired knowledge is not human readable. In this paper,
we present a new step in order to close the gap between connectionist and logic
based reasoning systems. We show that two of the most used inference rules for
obtaining negative information in rule based reasoning systems, the so-called
Closed World Assumption and Negation as Finite Failure can be characterized by
means of spiking neural P systems, a formal model of the third generation of
neural networks born in the framework of membrane computing.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
Fuzzy investment decision support for brownfield redevelopment
Nová metoda umožňuje zefektivnit proces analýzy a porovnávání alternativních investic a přesněji zpracovat velký objem informací. Ve výsledku tak bude zmenšen počet prvků množiny nejvhodnějších alternativních investic na základě hierarchie parametrů stanovených investorem. This dissertation focuses on decision making, investing and brownfield redevelopment. Especially on the analysis, evaluation and selection of previously used real estates suitable for commercial use. The objective of this dissertation is to design a method that facilitates the decision making process with many possible alternatives and large number of relevant parameters influencing the decision. The proposed method is based on the use of fuzzy logic, modeling, statistic analysis, cluster analysis, graph theory and sophisticated methods of information collection and processing. New method allows decision makers to process much larger amount of information and evaluate possible investment alternatives efficiently.
