    On the passivity of interaction control with series elastic actuation

    Regulating the mechanical interaction between robot and environment is a fundamentally important problem in robotics. Many applications such as manipulation and assembly tasks necessitate interaction control. Applications in which the robots are expected to collaborate and share the workspace with humans also require interaction control. Therefore, interaction controllers are quintessential to physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) applications. Passivity paradigm provides powerful design tools to ensure the safety of interaction. It relies on the idea that passive systems do not generate energy that can potentially destabilize the system. Thus, coupled stability is guaranteed if the controller and the environment are passive. Fortunately, passive environments constitute an extensive and useful set, including all combinations of linear or nonlinear masses, springs, and dampers. Moreover, a human operator may also be treated as a passive network element. Passivity paradigm is appealing for pHRI applications as it ensures stability robustness and provides ease-of-control design. However, passivity is a conservative framework which imposes stringent limits on control gains that deteriorate the performance. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to obtain the most relaxed passivity bounds for the control design problem. Series Elastic Actuation (SEA) has become prevalent in pHRI applications as it provides considerable advantages over traditional sti actuators in terms of stability robustness and delity of force control, thanks to deliberately introduced compliance between the actuator and the load. Several impedance control architectures have been proposed for SEA. Among the alternatives, the cascaded controller with an inner-most velocity loop, an intermediate torque loop and an outer-most impedance loop is particularly favoured for its simplicity, robustness, and performance. In this thesis, we derive the necessary and su cient conditions to ensure the passivity of the cascade-controller architecture for rendering two classical linear impedance models of null impedance and pure spring. Based on the newly established passivity conditions, we provide non-conservative design guidelines to haptically display free-space and virtual spring while ensuring coupled stability, thus the safety of interaction. We demonstrate the validity of these conditions through simulation studies as well as physical experiments. We demonstrate the importance of including physical damping in the actuator model during derivation of passivity conditions, when integral controllers are utilized. We note the unintuitive adversary e ect of actuator damping on system passivity. More precisely, we establish that the damping term imposes an extra bound on controller gains to preserve passivity. We further study an extension to the cascaded SEA control architecture and discover that series elastic damping actuation (SEDA) can passively render impedances that are out of the range of SEA. In particular, we demonstrate that SEDA can passively render Voigt model and impedances higher than the physical spring-damper pair in SEDA.     On the critical role of the sensorimotor loop on the design of interaction techniques and interactive devices

    People interact with their environment thanks to their perceptual and motor skills. This is the way they both use objects around them and perceive the world around them. Interactive systems are examples of such objects. Therefore to design such objects, we must understand how people perceive them and manipulate them. For example, haptics is both related to the human sense of touch and what I call the motor ability. I address a number of research questions related to the design and implementation of haptic, gestural, and touch interfaces and present examples of contributions on these topics. More interestingly, perception, cognition, and action are not separated processes, but an integrated combination of them called the sensorimotor loop. Interactive systems follow the same overall scheme, with differences that make the complementarity of humans and machines. The interaction phenomenon is a set of connections between human sensorimotor loops, and interactive systems execution loops. It connects inputs with outputs, users and systems, and the physical world with cognition and computing in what I call the Human-System loop. This model provides a complete overview of the interaction phenomenon. It helps to identify the limiting factors of interaction that we can address to improve the design of interaction techniques and interactive devices.Les humains interagissent avec leur environnement grâce à leurs capacités perceptives et motrices. C'est ainsi qu'ils utilisent les objets qui les entourent et perçoivent le monde autour d'eux. Les systèmes interactifs sont des exemples de tels objets. Par conséquent, pour concevoir de tels objets, nous devons comprendre comment les gens les perçoivent et les manipulent. Par exemple, l'haptique est à la fois liée au sens du toucher et à ce que j'appelle la capacité motrice. J'aborde un certain nombre de questions de recherche liées à la conception et à la mise en œuvre d'interfaces haptiques, gestuelles et tactiles et je présente des exemples de contributions sur ces sujets.     This Open Access book offers an original interdisciplinary overview of the role of haptic feedback in musical interaction. Divided into two parts, part I examines the tactile aspects of music performance and perception, discussing how they affect user experience and performance in terms of usability, functionality and perceived quality of musical instruments. Part II presents engineering, computational, and design approaches and guidelines that have been applied to render and exploit haptic feedback in digital musical interfaces. Musical Haptics introduces an emerging field that brings together engineering, human-computer interaction, applied psychology, musical aesthetics, and music performance. The latter, defined as the complex system of sensory-motor interactions between musicians and their instruments, presents a well-defined framework in which to study basic psychophysical, perceptual, and biomechanical aspects of touch, all of which will inform the design of haptic musical interfaces. Tactile and proprioceptive cues enable embodied interaction and inform sophisticated control strategies that allow skilled musicians to achieve high performance and expressivity. The use of haptic feedback in digital musical interfaces is expected to enhance user experience and performance, improve accessibility for disabled persons, and provide an effective means for musical tuition and guidance

    Ankle-Foot Orthosis Stiffness: Biomechanical Effects, Measurement and Emulation

    Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are braces worn by individuals with gait impairments to provide support about the ankle. AFOs come in a variety of designs for clinicians to choose from. However, as the effects of different design parameters on AFO properties and AFO users have not been adequately quantified, it is not clear which design choices are most likely to improve patient outcomes. Recent advances in manufacturing have further expanded the design space, adding urgency and complexity to the challenge of selecting optimal designs. A key AFO property affected by design decisions is sagittal-plane rotational stiffness. To evaluate the effectiveness of different AFO designs, we need: 1) a better understanding of the biomechanical effects of AFO stiffness and 2) more precise and repeatable stiffness measurement methods. This dissertation addresses these needs by accomplishing four aims. First, we conducted a systematic literature review on the influence of AFO stiffness on gait biomechanics. We found that ankle and knee kinematics are affected by increasing stiffness, with minimal effects on hip kinematics and kinetics. However, the lack of effective stiffness measurement techniques made it difficult to determine which specific values or ranges of stiffness influence biomechanics. Therefore, in Aim2, we developed an AFO stiffness measurement apparatus (SMApp). The SMApp is an automated device that non-destructively flexes an AFO to acquire operator- and trial-independent measurements of its torque-angle dynamics. The SMApp was designed to test a variety of AFO types and sizes across a wide range of flexion angles and speeds exceeding current alternatives. Common models of AFO torque-angle dynamics in literature have simplified the relationship to a linear fit whose slope represents stiffness. This linear approximation ignores damping parameters. However, as previous studies were unable to precisely control AFO flexion speed, the presence of speed effects has not been adequately investigated. Thus, in Aim3, we used the SMApp to test whether AFOs exhibit viscoelastic behaviors over the range of speeds typically achieved during walking. This study revealed small but statistically significant effects of flexion speed on AFO stiffness for samples of both traditional AFOs and novel 3-D printed AFOs, suggesting that more complex models that include damping parameters could be more suitable for modeling AFO dynamics. Finally, in Aim 4, we investigated the use of an active exoskeleton, that can haptically-emulate different AFOs, as a potential test bed for studying the effects of AFO parameters on human movement. Prior work has used emulation for rapid prototyping of candidate assistive devices. While emulators can mimic a physical device's torque-angle profile, the physical and emulated devices may have other differences that influence user biomechanics. Current studies have not investigated these differences, which limits translation of findings from emulated to physical devices. To evaluate the efficacy of AFO emulation as a research tool, we conducted a single-subject pilot study with a custom-built AFO emulator device. We compared user kinematics while walking with a physical AFO against those with an emulated AFO and found they elicited similar ankle trajectories. This dissertation resulted in the successful development and evaluation of a framework consisting of two test beds, one to assess AFO mechanical properties and another to assess the effects of these properties on the AFO user. The series of books on Advances in Robot Kinematics (ARK) report the latest achievement in this field. ARK has a long history as the first book was published in 1991 and since then new issues have been published every 2 years. Each book is the follow-up of a single-track symposium in which the participants exchange their results and opinions in a meeting that bring together the best of world’s researchers and scientists together with young students. Since 1992 the ARK symposia have come under the patronage of the International Federation for the Promotion of Machine Science-IFToMM.This book is the 13th in the series and is the result of peer-review process intended to select the newest and most original achievements in this field. For the first time the articles of this symposium will be published in a green open-access archive to favor free dissemination of the results. However the book will also be o↵ered as a on-demand printed book.The papers proposed in this book show that robot kinematics is an exciting domain with an immense number of research challenges that go well beyond the field of robotics.The last symposium related with this book was organized by the French National Re- search Institute in Computer Science and Control Theory (INRIA) in Grasse, France
