    Virtual lines, a deadlock free and real-time routing mechanism for ATM networks

    In this paper we present a routing mechanism and buffer allocation mechanism for an ATM switching fabric. Since the fabric will be used to transfer multimedia traffic it should provide a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a suitable routing mechanism that is capable to fulfil these requirements and is free of deadlocks. We will describe two basic concepts that can be used to implement deadlock free routing. Routing of messages is closely related to buffering. We have organized the buffers into parallel fifos, each representing a virtual line. In this way we not only have solved the problem of Head Of Line blocking, but we can also give real-time guarantees. We will show that for local high-speed networks it is more advantageous to have a proper flow control than to have large buffers. Although the virtual line concept can have a low buffer utilization, the transfer efficiency can be higher. The virtual lines concept allows adaptive routing. The total throughput of the network can be improved by using alternative routes. Adaptive routing is attractive in networks where alternative routes are not much longer than the initial route(s). The network of the switching fabric is built up from switching elements interconnected in a Kautz topology

    OutFlank Routing: Increasing Throughput in Toroidal Interconnection Networks

    We present a new, deadlock-free, routing scheme for toroidal interconnection networks, called OutFlank Routing (OFR). OFR is an adaptive strategy which exploits non-minimal links, both in the source and in the destination nodes. When minimal links are congested, OFR deroutes packets to carefully chosen intermediate destinations, in order to obtain travel paths which are only an additive constant longer than the shortest ones. Since routing performance is very sensitive to changes in the traffic model or in the router parameters, an accurate discrete-event simulator of the toroidal network has been developed to empirically validate OFR, by comparing it against other relevant routing strategies, over a range of typical real-world traffic patterns. On the 16x16x16 (4096 nodes) simulated network OFR exhibits improvements of the maximum sustained throughput between 14% and 114%, with respect to Adaptive Bubble Routing.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, to be presented at ICPADS 201

    A Switch Architecture for Real-Time Multimedia Communications

    In this paper we present a switch that can be used to transfer multimedia type of trafJic. The switch provides a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a prototype Switching Element using the new technology opportunities being offered today. The architecture meets the multimedia requirements but still has a low complexity and needs a minimum amount of hardware. A main item of this paper will be the background of the architectural design decisions made. These include the interconnection topology, buffer organization, routing and scheduling. The implementation of the switching fabric with FPGAs, allows us to experiment with switching mode, routing strategy and scheduling policy in a multimedia environment. The witching elements are interconnected in a Kautz topology. Kautz graphs have interesting properties such as: a small diametec the degree is independent of the network size, the network is fault-tolerant and has a simple routing algorithm

    A performance model of communication in the quarc NoC

    Networks on-chip (NoC) emerged as a promising communication medium for future MPSoC development. To serve this purpose, the NoCs have to be able to efficiently exchange all types of traffic including the collective communications at a reasonable cost. The Quarc NoC is introduced as a NOC which is highly efficient in performing collective communication operations such as broadcast and multicast. This paper presents an introduction to the Quarc scheme and an analytical model to compute the average message latency in the architecture. To validate the model we compare the model latency prediction against the results obtained from discrete-event simulations

The efficiency of the Quarc architecture is achieved through balancing the traffic which is the result of the modifications applied to the topology and the routing elements of the Spidergon NoC. This paper provides an ASIC implementation of both architectures using UMCpsilas 0.13 mum CMOS technology and demonstrates an analysis and comparison of the cost and performance between the Quarc and the Spidergon NoCs

    Design and implementation of the Quarc network on-chip

    Networks-on-Chip (NoC) have emerged as alternative to buses to provide a packet-switched communication medium for modular development of large Systems-on-Chip. However, to successfully replace its predecessor, the NoC has to be able to efficiently exchange all types of traffic including collective communications. The latter is especially important for e.g. cache updates in multicore systems. The Quarc NoC architecture has been introduced as a Networks-on-Chip which is highly efficient in exchanging all types of traffic including broadcast and multicast. In this paper we present the hardware implementation of the switch architecture and the network adapter (transceiver) of the Quarc NoC. Moreover, the paper presents an analysis and comparison of the cost and performance between the Quarc and the Spidergon NoCs implemented in Verilog targeting the Xilinx Virtex FPGA family. We demonstrate a dramatic improvement in performance over the Spidergon especially for broadcast traffic, at no additional hardware cost

    ADN: An Information-Centric Networking Architecture for the Internet of Things

    Forwarding data by name has been assumed to be a necessary aspect of an information-centric redesign of the current Internet architecture that makes content access, dissemination, and storage more efficient. The Named Data Networking (NDN) and Content-Centric Networking (CCNx) architectures are the leading examples of such an approach. However, forwarding data by name incurs storage and communication complexities that are orders of magnitude larger than solutions based on forwarding data using addresses. Furthermore, the specific algorithms used in NDN and CCNx have been shown to have a number of limitations. The Addressable Data Networking (ADN) architecture is introduced as an alternative to NDN and CCNx. ADN is particularly attractive for large-scale deployments of the Internet of Things (IoT), because it requires far less storage and processing in relaying nodes than NDN. ADN allows things and data to be denoted by names, just like NDN and CCNx do. However, instead of replacing the waist of the Internet with named-data forwarding, ADN uses an address-based forwarding plane and introduces an information plane that seamlessly maps names to addresses without the involvement of end-user applications. Simulation results illustrate the order of magnitude savings in complexity that can be attained with ADN compared to NDN.Comment: 10 page

    Worst-case end-to-end delays evaluation for SpaceWire networks

    SpaceWire is a standard for on-board satellite networks chosen by the ESA as the basis for multiplexing payload and control traffic on future data-handling architectures. However, network designers need tools to ensure that the network is able to deliver critical messages on time. Current research fails to address this needs for SpaceWire networks. On one hand, many papers only seek to determine probabilistic results for end-to-end delays on Wormhole networks like SpaceWire. This does not provide sufficient guarantee for critical traffic. On the other hand, a few papers give methods to determine maximum latencies on wormhole networks that, unlike SpaceWire, have dedicated real-time mechanisms built-in. Thus, in this paper, we propose an appropriate method to compute an upper-bound on the worst-case end-to-end delay of a packet in a SpaceWire network
