Surface integrity study for FC300 cast iron using TiAIN ball end mill
Finishing of FC300 gray cast iron predominantly done by
manual polishing. Study the surface integrity of FC300 after
machining is crucial to investigate the surface characteristics
before polishing. This work aims to investigate the surface
profiles and subsurface alterations induced by milling of
FC300 gray cast iron using TiAlN Ball end mill. Machining
trials were performed using CNC variaxis machine in dry
condition at the cutting speeds of 66-99 m/min, feed rates of
0.27-0.42 mm/tooth and constant depth of cut of 0.1 mm.
The results shows that the surface roughness decreased as
the cutting speed increased from 66 m/min to 88 m/min.
Smooth and shiny surface profiles appeared at the lower
cutting speed of 66 m/min due to effect of lubrication
layer that formed from the small fragmented graphite
flakes. When the cutting speed increased to 99 m/min,
surface profiles appeared with smeared and large
graphite flakes probably due to higher rotational impact
from the cutting tool. Analysis of subsurface
microstructure observed bending effects at the region
where worn cutting tool applied. Severe crack nucleation’s
were evidence to reflect severe rubbing action from worn
cutting tool
Specific instrumentation and diagnostics for high-intensity hadron beams
An overview of various typical instruments used for high-intensity hadron
beams is given. In addition, a few important diagnostic methods are discussed
which are quite special for these kinds of beams.Comment: 58 pages, contribution to the CAS - CERN Accelerator School: Course

Instruments of RT-2 Experiment onboard CORONAS-PHOTON and their test and evaluation III: Coded Aperture Mask and Fresnel Zone Plates in RT-2/CZT Payload
Imaging in hard X-rays of any astrophysical source with high angular
resolution is a challenging job. Shadow-casting technique is one of the most
viable options for imaging in hard X-rays. We have used two different types of
shadow-casters, namely, Coded Aperture Mask (CAM) and Fresnel Zone Plate (FZP)
pair and two types of pixellated solid-state detectors, namely, CZT and CMOS in
RT-2/CZT payload, the hard X-ray imaging instrument onboard the CORONAS-PHOTON
satellite. In this paper, we present the results of simulations with different
combinations of coders (CAM & FZP) and detectors that are employed in the
RT-2/CZT payload. We discuss the possibility of detecting transient Solar
flares with good angular resolution for various combinations. Simulated results
are compared with laboratory experiments to verify the consistency of the
designed configuration.Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Experimental

GePEToS : A Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation package for Positron Emission Tomography
GePEToS is a simulation framework developed over the last few years for
assessing the instrumental performance of future PET scanners. It is based on
Geant4, written in Object-Oriented C++ and runs on Linux platforms. The
validity of GePEToS has been tested on the well-known Siemens ECAT EXACT HR+
camera. The results of two application examples are presented : the design
optimization of a liquid Xe micro-PET camera dedicated to small animal imaging
as well as the evaluation of the effect of a strong axial magnetic field on the
image resolution of a Concorde P4 micro-PET camera.Comment: 5 pages, 12 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Nuclear

The ArgoNeuT Detector in the NuMI Low-Energy beam line at Fermilab
The ArgoNeuT liquid argon time projection chamber has collected thousands of
neutrino and antineutrino events during an extended run period in the NuMI
beam-line at Fermilab. This paper focuses on the main aspects of the detector
layout and related technical features, including the cryogenic equipment, time
projection chamber, read-out electronics, and off-line data treatment. The
detector commissioning phase, physics run, and first neutrino event displays
are also reported. The characterization of the main working parameters of the
detector during data-taking, the ionization electron drift velocity and
lifetime in liquid argon, as obtained from through-going muon data complete the
present report.Comment: 43 pages, 27 figures, 5 tables - update referenc
