Reducing the Barrier to Entry of Complex Robotic Software: a MoveIt! Case Study
Developing robot agnostic software frameworks involves synthesizing the
disparate fields of robotic theory and software engineering while
simultaneously accounting for a large variability in hardware designs and
control paradigms. As the capabilities of robotic software frameworks increase,
the setup difficulty and learning curve for new users also increase. If the
entry barriers for configuring and using the software on robots is too high,
even the most powerful of frameworks are useless. A growing need exists in
robotic software engineering to aid users in getting started with, and
customizing, the software framework as necessary for particular robotic
applications. In this paper a case study is presented for the best practices
found for lowering the barrier of entry in the MoveIt! framework, an
open-source tool for mobile manipulation in ROS, that allows users to 1)
quickly get basic motion planning functionality with minimal initial setup, 2)
automate its configuration and optimization, and 3) easily customize its
components. A graphical interface that assists the user in configuring MoveIt!
is the cornerstone of our approach, coupled with the use of an existing
standardized robot model for input, automatically generated robot-specific
configuration files, and a plugin-based architecture for extensibility. These
best practices are summarized into a set of barrier to entry design principles
applicable to other robotic software. The approaches for lowering the entry
barrier are evaluated by usage statistics, a user survey, and compared against
our design objectives for their effectiveness to users
The Use of Reference Models in Business Process Renovation
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are often used by companies to automate and enhance their business processes. The capabilities of ERP systems can be described by best-practice reference models. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the business process renovation approach with the use of reference models. Although the use of reference models brings many positive effects for business, they are still rarely used in Slovenian small and medium-sized companies. The reasons for this may be found in the reference models themselves as well as in project implementation methodologies. In the article a reference model based on Microsoft Dynamics NAV is suggested. A Framework for Designing 3d Virtual Environments
The process of design and development of virtual environments can be supported by tools and frameworks, to save time in technical aspects and focusing on the content. In this paper we present an academic framework which provides several levels of abstraction to ease this work. It includes state-of-the-art components we devised or integrated adopting open-source solutions in order to face specific problems. Trends in consumer preferences for product customization and their application in product design
Abstract: Consumer preferences play an important role in the decision to customize a product. The collection of consumer preferences can be a challenging task and most methods require significant effort while only focusing on one specific product or product type. A popular method of collecting consumer preferences is a survey as it is easy to administer and can be tailored to gather specific desirable information. In this paper, a survey is developed to gather consumer preferences for product customization with a focus on identifying trends amongst these preferences. User preferences are correlated to factors of success in customization and categorical definitions of product attributes. Twenty-five products were evaluated, with one hundred total responses collected. The results show the existence of product clusters that represent trends amongst consumer preferences for customization. The trends and clusters identified have potential applications in the design of novel customized products by using categorical representations to generalize the findings. Learning Styles in Higher Education: The use of Moodle platform
A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers concerning the study of the variables Learning Styles in Higher Education in the use of Moodle platform. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document was to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in the Scopus database during the period 2016-2021, achieving the identification of a total of 123 publications. The information provided by the said platform was organized through tables and figures categorizing the information by Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics were described, a qualitative analysis was used to refer to the position of different authors on the proposed topic. Among the main findings of this research, it is found that Indonesia, with 12 publications, was the country with the highest scientific production registered in the name of authors affiliated with institutions of that country. The Knowledge Area that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of Learning Styles in Higher Education in the use of the Moodle platform was Computer Science with 77 published documents, and the type of publication that was most used during the aforementioned period was the conference proceedings, representing 49% of the total scientific production

Interaction With Tilting Gestures In Ubiquitous Environments
In this paper, we introduce a tilting interface that controls direction based
applications in ubiquitous environments. A tilt interface is useful for
situations that require remote and quick interactions or that are executed in
public spaces. We explored the proposed tilting interface with different
application types and classified the tilting interaction techniques. Augmenting
objects with sensors can potentially address the problem of the lack of
intuitive and natural input devices in ubiquitous environments. We have
conducted an experiment to test the usability of the proposed tilting interface
to compare it with conventional input devices and hand gestures. The experiment
results showed greater improvement of the tilt gestures in comparison with hand
gestures in terms of speed, accuracy, and user satisfaction.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
