    Tools of Trade of the Next Blue-Collar Job? Antecedents, Design Features, and Outcomes of Interactive Labeling Systems

    Supervised machine learning is becoming increasingly popular - and so is the need for annotated training data. Such data often needs to be manually labeled by human workers, not unlikely to negatively impact the involved workforce. To alleviate this issue, a new information systems class has emerged - interactive labeling systems. However, this young, but rapidly growing field lacks guidance and structure regarding the design of such systems. Against this backdrop, this paper describes antecedents, design features, and outcomes of interactive labeling systems. We perform a systematic literature review, identifying 188 relevant articles. Our results are presented as a morphological box with 14 dimensions, which we evaluate using card sorting. By additionally offering this box as a web-based artifact, we provide actionable guidance for interactive labeling system development for scholars and practitioners. Lastly, we discuss imbalances in the article distribution of our morphological box and suggest future work directions

    Pedestrian Flow Simulation Validation and Verification Techniques

    For the verification and validation of microscopic simulation models of pedestrian flow, we have performed experiments for different kind of facilities and sites where most conflicts and congestion happens e.g. corridors, narrow passages, and crosswalks. The validity of the model should compare the experimental conditions and simulation results with video recording carried out in the same condition like in real life e.g. pedestrian flux and density distributions. The strategy in this technique is to achieve a certain amount of accuracy required in the simulation model. This method is good at detecting the critical points in the pedestrians walking areas. For the calibration of suitable models we use the results obtained from analyzing the video recordings in Hajj 2009 and these results can be used to check the design sections of pedestrian facilities and exits. As practical examples, we present the simulation of pilgrim streams on the Jamarat bridge. The objectives of this study are twofold: first, to show through verification and validation that simulation tools can be used to reproduce realistic scenarios, and second, gather data for accurate predictions for designers and decision makers.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure

    Parent Interventionists in Phonodialogic Emergent Reading with Preschool Children

    The purpose of this study was to examine an activity-based intervention, dialogic reading with embedded explicit phonological awareness strategies, applied as a preventive approach by parents in their home settings located within a culturally and ethnically diverse urban region. This study investigated the effects of training parents to employ a phonodialogic activity-based emergent reading intervention protocol to increase the phonological awareness skills of their 4- and 5-year old children. Helping young children learn phonological awareness skills are vitally important to the development of early reading (Anthony & Lonigan, 2004; Ziolkowski & Goldstein, 2008). This investigation provided an empirical examination of a critical area which has received little experimentation. Though there is ample empirical evidence on the contribution of phonological awareness to children\u27s reading skills, there is virtually no research on the contribution of phonological awareness instruction on the early reading development of young children when it is embedded within the context of a dialogic reading activity with parents as interventionists. Accordingly, the theoretical underpinnings of this study, specifically phonological awareness, activity-based intervention, and dialogic reading are discussed in the literature review section. This dissertation describes methodology and the results of testing the hypothesis that parental phonodialogic reading strategies will have an observable positive treatment effect on preschool children\u27s phonological awareness skills when baseline, intervention, and maintenance conditions are compared
