    Cross-Lingual Adaptation using Structural Correspondence Learning

    Cross-lingual adaptation, a special case of domain adaptation, refers to the transfer of classification knowledge between two languages. In this article we describe an extension of Structural Correspondence Learning (SCL), a recently proposed algorithm for domain adaptation, for cross-lingual adaptation. The proposed method uses unlabeled documents from both languages, along with a word translation oracle, to induce cross-lingual feature correspondences. From these correspondences a cross-lingual representation is created that enables the transfer of classification knowledge from the source to the target language. The main advantages of this approach over other approaches are its resource efficiency and task specificity. We conduct experiments in the area of cross-language topic and sentiment classification involving English as source language and German, French, and Japanese as target languages. The results show a significant improvement of the proposed method over a machine translation baseline, reducing the relative error due to cross-lingual adaptation by an average of 30% (topic classification) and 59% (sentiment classification). We further report on empirical analyses that reveal insights into the use of unlabeled data, the sensitivity with respect to important hyperparameters, and the nature of the induced cross-lingual correspondences

    Transfer Learning for Speech and Language Processing

    Transfer learning is a vital technique that generalizes models trained for one setting or task to other settings or tasks. For example in speech recognition, an acoustic model trained for one language can be used to recognize speech in another language, with little or no re-training data. Transfer learning is closely related to multi-task learning (cross-lingual vs. multilingual), and is traditionally studied in the name of `model adaptation'. Recent advance in deep learning shows that transfer learning becomes much easier and more effective with high-level abstract features learned by deep models, and the `transfer' can be conducted not only between data distributions and data types, but also between model structures (e.g., shallow nets and deep nets) or even model types (e.g., Bayesian models and neural models). This review paper summarizes some recent prominent research towards this direction, particularly for speech and language processing.     The application of Deep Learning in Persian Documents Sentiment Analysis

    Nowadays the amount of textual information on the web is grown rapidly. The huge textual data needs more accurate classification algorithms. Sentiment analysis is a branch of text classification that is used to classify user opinions in case of market decisions, product evaluations or measuring consumer confidence. With the rise of the production rate of Persian text data in a commercial area, improvement of the efficiency of algorithms in Persian is a must. The structure of the Persian language such as word and sentence structures poses some challenges in this area. Deep learning algorithms are recently used in NLP and especially sentiment text classification for many dominant languages like Persian. The goal is to improve the performance of classification using deep learning issues. In this work, the authors proposed a hybrid method by a combination of structural correspondence learning (SCL) and convolutional neural network (CNN). The SCL method selects the most effective pivot features so the adaptation from one domain to similar ones cannot drop the efficiency drastically. The results showed that the proposed hybrid method that is learned from one domain can act efficiently in a similar domain. The result showed that applying a combination of SCL+CNN can improve the result of sentiment classification for two domains more than 10 percent
