The Impact of Channel Feedback on Opportunistic Relay Selection for Hybrid-ARQ in Wireless Networks
This paper presents a decentralized relay selection protocol for a dense
wireless network and describes channel feedback strategies that improve its
performance. The proposed selection protocol supports hybrid
automatic-repeat-request transmission where relays forward parity information
to the destination in the event of a decoding error. Channel feedback is
employed for refining the relay selection process and for selecting an
appropriate transmission mode in a proposed adaptive modulation transmission
framework. An approximation of the throughput of the proposed adaptive
modulation strategy is presented, and the dependence of the throughput on
system parameters such as the relay contention probability and the adaptive
modulation switching point is illustrated via maximization of this
approximation. Simulations show that the throughput of the proposed selection
strategy is comparable to that yielded by a centralized selection approach that

Beaconless Packet Forwarding Approach for Vehicular Urban Environment
Existing wireless technologies provide communication and information services to all fields of life. The one of the emerging and popular field is vehicular ad hoc networks, with its unique characteristics and highly mobile environment. Different types of routing protocols have been proposed to address the routing issues in network and one of the most efficient types is geographical routing. In this type of protocols, the beacon messages are using to update the node locations and positions. However, these protoocls have been suffered with high channel congestion issue in the network. To this end, we propose a beaconless packet forwarding strategy based on modified handshake messages mechanism. The protocol uses some realistic metrics to select the next forwarder node such as forward progresss and link quality. The protocol performance is evaluated with existing beacon and beaconless geographical routing protocols. The simulation results showed the better performance of the proposed protocol in terms of packet delay and data delivery ratio in realistic wireless channel conditions

STiCMAC: A MAC Protocol for Robust Space-Time Coding in Cooperative Wireless LANs
Relay-assisted cooperative wireless communication has been shown to have
significant performance gains over the legacy direct transmission scheme.
Compared with single relay based cooperation schemes, utilizing multiple relays
further improves the reliability and rate of transmissions. Distributed
space-time coding (DSTC), as one of the schemes to utilize multiple relays,
requires tight coordination between relays and does not perform well in a
distributed environment with mobility. In this paper, a cooperative medium
access control (MAC) layer protocol, called \emph{STiCMAC}, is designed to
allow multiple relays to transmit at the same time in an IEEE 802.11 network.
The transmission is based on a novel DSTC scheme called \emph{randomized
distributed space-time coding} (\emph{R-DSTC}), which requires minimum
coordination. Unlike conventional cooperation schemes that pick nodes with good
links, \emph{STiCMAC} picks a \emph{transmission mode} that could most improve
the end-to-end data rate. Any station that correctly receives from the source
can act as a relay and participate in forwarding. The MAC protocol is
implemented in a fully decentralized manner and is able to opportunistically
recruit relays on the fly, thus making it \emph{robust} to channel variations
and user mobility. Simulation results show that the network capacity and delay
performance are greatly improved, especially in a mobile environment.Comment: This paper is a revised version of a paper with the same name

Wireless Communications in the Era of Big Data
The rapidly growing wave of wireless data service is pushing against the
boundary of our communication network's processing power. The pervasive and
exponentially increasing data traffic present imminent challenges to all the
aspects of the wireless system design, such as spectrum efficiency, computing
capabilities and fronthaul/backhaul link capacity. In this article, we discuss
the challenges and opportunities in the design of scalable wireless systems to
embrace such a "bigdata" era. On one hand, we review the state-of-the-art
networking architectures and signal processing techniques adaptable for
managing the bigdata traffic in wireless networks. On the other hand, instead
of viewing mobile bigdata as a unwanted burden, we introduce methods to
capitalize from the vast data traffic, for building a bigdata-aware wireless
network with better wireless service quality and new mobile applications. We
highlight several promising future research directions for wireless

Cross-layer aided energy-efficient routing design for ad hoc networks
In this treatise, we first review some basic routing protocols conceived for ad hoc networks, followed by some design examples of cross-layer operation aided routing protocols. Specifically, cross-layer operation across the PHYsical layer (PHY), the Data Link layer (DL) and even the NETwork layer (NET) is exemplified for improving the energy efficiency of the entire system. Moreover, the philosophy of Opportunistic Routing (OR) is reviewed for the sake of further reducing the system's energy dissipation with the aid of optimized Power Allocation (PA). The system's end-to-end throughput is also considered in the context of a design example
Design and analysis of a beacon-less routing protocol for large volume content dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks
Largevolumecontentdisseminationispursuedbythegrowingnumberofhighquality applications for Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks(VANETs), e.g., the live road surveillance service and the video-based overtaking assistant service. For the highly dynamical vehicular network topology, beacon-less routing protocols have been proven to be efficient in achieving a balance between the system performance and the control overhead. However, to the authors’ best knowledge, the routing design for large volume content has not been well considered in the previous work, which will introduce new challenges, e.g., the enhanced connectivity requirement for a radio link. In this paper, a link Lifetime-aware Beacon-less Routing Protocol (LBRP) is designed for large volume content delivery in VANETs. Each vehicle makes the forwarding decision based on the message header information and its current state, including the speed and position information. A semi-Markov process analytical model is proposed to evaluate the expected delay in constructing one routing path for LBRP. Simulations show that the proposed LBRP scheme outperforms the traditional dissemination protocols in providing a low end-to-end delay.
