    Few-mode fibers and AO-assisted high resolution spectroscopy: coupling efficiency and modal noise mitigation

    NIRPS (Near Infra-Red Planet Searcher) is an AO-assisted and fiber-fed spectrograph for high precision radial velocity measurements that will operate in the YJH-bands. While using an AO system in such instrument is generally considered to feed a single-mode fiber, NIRPS is following a different path by using a small multi-mode fiber (more specifically called "few-mode fiber"). This choice offers an excellent trade-off by allowing to design a compact cryogenic spectrograph, while maintaining a high coupling efficiency under bad seeing conditions and for faint stars. The main drawback resides in a much more important modal-noise, a problem that has to be tackled for allowing 1m/s precision radial velocity measurements. We study the impact of using an AO system to couple light into few-mode fibers. We focus on two aspects: the coupling efficiency into few-mode fibers and the question of modal noise and scrambling. We show first that NIRPS can reach coupling >= 50% up to magnitude I=12, and offer a gain of 1-2 magnitudes over a single-mode solution. We finally show that the best strategy to mitigate modal noise with the AO system is among the simplest: a continuous tip-tilt scanning of the fiber core.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.     Machining stability and machine tool dynamics

    Machining is a common manufacturing process in industry due to its high flexibility and ability to produce parts which excellent quality. The productivity and quality in machining operations can be limited by several process constraints one of which is the self-excited chatter vibrations. Under certain conditions, the process may become unstable yielding oscillations with high amplitudes which result in poor surface finish and damage to the cutting tool, part and the machine tool itself. Stability analysis of the dynamic cutting process can be used to determine chatter-free machining conditions with high material removal rate. Since chatter is a result of the dynamic interactions between the process and the structures both cutting and machine tool dynamics are important elements of the stability analysis. In this paper, methods developed for stability analysis of cutting processes and machine tool dynamics will be presented. Implications of these methods in the selection of process parameters and machine tool design will be also discussed with example applications

    ATPG for Faults Analysis in VLSI Circuits Using Immune Genetic Algorithm

    As design trends move toward nanometer technology, new Automatic Test Pattern Generation (ATPG)problems are merging. During design validation, the effect of crosstalk on reliability and performance cannot be ignored. So new ATPG Techniques has to be developed for testing crosstalk faults which affect the timing behaviour of circuits. In this paper, we present a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based test generation for crosstalk induced delay faults in VLSI circuits. The GA produces reduced test set which contains as few as possible test vector pairs, which detect as many as possible crosstalk delay faults. It uses a crosstalk delay fault simulator which computes the fitness of each test sequence. Tests are generated for ISCAS’85 and scan version of ISCAS’89 benchmark circuits. Experimental results demonstrate that GA gives higher fault coverage and compact test vectors for most of the benchmark circuits

    Interfacing GHz-bandwidth heralded single photons with a room-temperature Raman quantum memory

    Photonics is a promising platform for quantum technologies. However, photon sources and two-photon gates currently only operate probabilistically. Large-scale photonic processing will therefore be impossible without a multiplexing strategy to actively select successful events. High time-bandwidth-product quantum memories - devices that store and retrieve single photons on-demand - provide an efficient remedy via active synchronisation. Here we interface a GHz-bandwidth heralded single-photon source and a room-temperature Raman memory with a time-bandwidth product exceeding 1000. We store heralded single photons and observe a clear influence of the input photon statistics on the retrieved light, which agrees with our theoretical model. The preservation of the stored field's statistics is limited by four-wave-mixing noise, which we identify as the key remaining challenge in the development of practical memories for scalable photonic information processing
