#SocialJustice: Combatting Implicit Bias in an Age of Millennials, Colorblindness, & Microaggressions

    Get PDF
Law schools, in an effort to produce practice-ready graduates, are in an opportune position to take the lead in confronting social justice. Many schools are shifting from traditional classroom instruction to more experiential learning environments which place students early in their academic pursuits in contact with clients and legal problems. While academic support originally focused on racial integration in law schools, today’s Academic Support professionals support students who are diverse in various ways. As professionals, we cannot assume that our diverse students do not carry bias. Implicit bias, a bias one is not consciously aware of, has the ability to derail relationships with clients and peers. Complicating matters is the general assumption that Millennials, the “colorblind” generation, are the most tolerant of all previous generations. Yet, studies have found Millennials just as susceptible to bias as previous generations. Thus, law schools have the responsibility to train their students to become lawyers who are capable of working with diverse groups of people and do so with the ability to mitigate their biases, which could potentially bring a fairer administration of justice. This training must go beyond informing students about implicit bias but also teach them mechanisms to combat such bias

    Environmental attitudes towards wine tourism

    Get PDF
Wine tourism marketers frequently seek new ways to promote destinations, often executing ecologically sustainable practices. As consumer environmental knowledge of a wine tourism destination increases, consumer attitudes change, influencing perceptions of the environmental policies of a wine region. In this consumer-driven economy, it is therefore important to search for effective ways to market destinations, and one approach is selective marketing. By focusing on consumers in this manner, it is possible to understand better their concerns and motivations, which should aid in marketing and advertising efforts. This study investigated wine consumers environmental concerns and attitudes about wine regions. Results suggest environmental attitudes differed by demographics regarding the impact of wine tourism, providing ideas on further marketing efforts for those involved in wine tourism

    Get PDF
Life Sciences is seen as a hub for innovation and an industry that is working to improve the world by creating products to eradicate major diseases and improve the lives of people. One major technology company is a part of this rapidly growing industry that even in tough economic conditions provides a lot of scope for growth and development. This growth is driven, in part, by expanded consumer access to health care in the US through the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Health care spending is expected to increase on average 4.9% during 2014-2018. Growth is also expected in other parts of the world, like Asia, Australia, Middle East, and Africa. This company faces challenges from competitors. As a result of mergers and consolidations between customers, this company\u27s customer base could become even more concentrated. In order to stay ahead of its competitors, this Fortune 500 company needs to spur innovation and attract and retain the best talent

How do we Bridge the Gap between the Five Generations in the Workforce and Reduce Biases around Age?

    Get PDF
In today’s organizations, as many as four to five generations work together. The multigenerational workplace is vulnerable to age biases that can lead to lower job and organizational satisfaction. These biases are of particular harm to older employees, whose performance suffers the most under biased managers. However, gaps between generations may be smaller than perceived, with many generations sharing similarities in values and organizational commitment. Even if the “generation gap” is small, eliminating bias and creating a diverse work environment is important for organizational success

Is your tutorial getting old? Does it really suit an audience of mostly Millennials? Librarians know that Millennials learn, read, and even play differently than librarians do. Librarians at George Washington University\u27s Gelman Library decided to bridge that gap by venturing beyond traditional point-click-read tutorials and jumping into gaming. As pedagogical techniques have evolved more and more to emphasize critical thinking and collaborative learning, the presenters determined that these valuable learning tools could be integrated into a gaming environment. This entailed reaching beyond the library to collaborate with a computer scientist and a graphic designer, and to consult with their main audience, the University Writing Program, in creating a Massively Multi-Player Online Game (MMOG) for teaching the research process. A lesson learned is that innovation takes time. In the year since the idea for this game took root, the presenters have researched and become versant in gaming principles and technologies. A game scenario and framework has been created from scratch, and, in keeping with the University Writing Program, the Library\u27s pedagogical goals have been clarified. A myriad of challenges from developing the game, including communicating across disciplines, to negotiating among the limits and promises of new technology, to redefining conceptions of information literacy, and to walking the line between fun and learning have been addressed but are still challenges. The presenters will share the why and how of creating a serious game for Millennials and how three librarians, and one gamer made this a reality

Poster presentation at the Virginia Library Association Conference on October 23, 2014. This poster introduces new ideas for instructional design using game structures that students are already familiar with to teach information literacy concepts. It is well documented that millennials enjoy learning through collaboration with peers and self-exploration in a fast-paced, technology rich environment, and game-based instruction can be a great way to engage them in the classroom. While millennials are comfortable with technology and enjoy learning through video and web-based games, it is difficult for libraries with limited resources to compete with the expectations that students have based on their lifelong experiences with high-tech video games. Examples of non-technology based games that have been effective with undergraduates are provided. Specifically, a case study that the presenter conducted, of creating an innovative Candy Land based game to teach information ethics will is described. Student responses and assessment of student learning is shared
