    Topomap: Topological Mapping and Navigation Based on Visual SLAM Maps

    Visual robot navigation within large-scale, semi-structured environments deals with various challenges such as computation intensive path planning algorithms or insufficient knowledge about traversable spaces. Moreover, many state-of-the-art navigation approaches only operate locally instead of gaining a more conceptual understanding of the planning objective. This limits the complexity of tasks a robot can accomplish and makes it harder to deal with uncertainties that are present in the context of real-time robotics applications. In this work, we present Topomap, a framework which simplifies the navigation task by providing a map to the robot which is tailored for path planning use. This novel approach transforms a sparse feature-based map from a visual Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) system into a three-dimensional topological map. This is done in two steps. First, we extract occupancy information directly from the noisy sparse point cloud. Then, we create a set of convex free-space clusters, which are the vertices of the topological map. We show that this representation improves the efficiency of global planning, and we provide a complete derivation of our algorithm. Planning experiments on real world datasets demonstrate that we achieve similar performance as RRT* with significantly lower computation times and storage requirements. Finally, we test our algorithm on a mobile robotic platform to prove its advantages.Comment: 8 page

    Contributions to metric-topological localization and mapping in mobile robotics

    This thesis addresses the problem of localization and mapping in mobile robotics. The ability of a robot to build a map of an unknown environment from sensory information is required to perform self-localization and autonomous navigation, as a necessary condition to carry out more complex tasks. This problem has been widely investigated in the last decades, but the solutions presented have still important limitations, mainly to cope with large scale and dynamic environments, and to work in a wider range of conditions and scenarios. In this context, this thesis takes a step forward towards highly efficient localization and mapping.A first contribution of this work is a new mapping strategy that presents two key features: the lightweight representation of world metric information, and the organization of this metric map into a topological structure that allows efficient localization and map optimization. Regarding the first issue, a map is proposed based on planar patches which are extracted from range or RGB-D images. This plane-based map (PbMap) is particularly well suited for indoor scenarios, and has the advantage of being a very compact and still a descriptive representation which is useful to perform real-time place recognition and loop closure. These operations are based on matching planar features taking into account their geometric relationships. On the other hand, the abstraction of metric information is necessary to deal with large scale SLAM and with navigation in complex environments. For that, we propose to structure the map in a metric-topological structure which is dynamically organized upon the sensor observations.  Also, a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system employing an omnidirectional RGB-D device which combines several structured-light sensors (Asus Xtion Pro Live) is presented. This device allows the quick construction of rich models of the environment at a relative low cost in comparison with previous alternatives. Our SLAM approach is based on a hierarchical structure of keyframes with a low level layer of metric information and several topological layers intended for large scale SLAM and navigation. This SLAM solution, which makes use of the metric-topological representation mentioned above, works at video frame rate obtaining highly consistent maps. Future research is expected on metric-topological-semantic mapping from the new sensor and the SLAM system presented here. Finally, an extrinsic calibration technique is proposed to obtain the relative poses of a combination of 3D range sensors, like those employed in the omnidirectional RGB-D device mentioned above. The calibration is computed from the observation of planar surfaces of a structured environment in a fast, easy and robust way, presenting qualitative and quantitative advantages with respect to previous approaches. This technique is extended to calibrate any combination of range sensors, including 2D and 3D range sensors, in any configuration. The calibration of such sets of sensors is interesting not only for mobile robots, but also for autonomous cars

    Mapping and Semantic Perception for Service Robotics

    Para realizar una tarea, los robots deben ser capaces de ubicarse en el entorno. Si un robot no sabe dónde se encuentra, es imposible que sea capaz de desplazarse para alcanzar el objetivo de su tarea. La localización y construcción de mapas simultánea, llamado SLAM, es un problema estudiado en la literatura que ofrece una solución a este problema. El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar técnicas que permitan a un robot comprender el entorno mediante la incorporación de información semántica. Esta información también proporcionará una mejora en la localización y navegación de las plataformas robóticas. Además, también demostramos cómo un robot con capacidades limitadas puede construir de forma fiable y eficiente los mapas semánticos necesarios para realizar sus tareas cotidianas.El sistema de construcción de mapas presentado tiene las siguientes características: En el lado de la construcción de mapas proponemos la externalización de cálculos costosos a un servidor en nube. Además, proponemos métodos para registrar información semántica relevante con respecto a los mapas geométricos estimados. En cuanto a la reutilización de los mapas construidos, proponemos un método que combina la construcción de mapas con la navegación de un robot para explorar mejor un entorno y disponer de un mapa semántico con los objetos relevantes para una misión determinada.En primer lugar, desarrollamos un algoritmo semántico de SLAM visual que se fusiona los puntos estimados en el mapa, carentes de sentido, con objetos conocidos. Utilizamos un sistema monocular de SLAM basado en un EKF (Filtro Extendido de Kalman) centrado principalmente en la construcción de mapas geométricos compuestos únicamente por puntos o bordes; pero sin ningún significado o contenido semántico asociado. El mapa no anotado se construye utilizando sólo la información extraída de una secuencia de imágenes monoculares. La parte semántica o anotada del mapa -los objetos- se estiman utilizando la información de la secuencia de imágenes y los modelos de objetos precalculados. Como segundo paso, mejoramos el método de SLAM presentado anteriormente mediante el diseño y la implementación de un método distribuido. La optimización de mapas y el almacenamiento se realiza como un servicio en la nube, mientras que el cliente con poca necesidad de computo, se ejecuta en un equipo local ubicado en el robot y realiza el cálculo de la trayectoria de la cámara. Los ordenadores con los que está equipado el robot se liberan de la mayor parte de los cálculos y el único requisito adicional es una conexión a Internet.El siguiente paso es explotar la información semántica que somos capaces de generar para ver cómo mejorar la navegación de un robot. La contribución en esta tesis se centra en la detección 3D y en el diseño e implementación de un sistema de construcción de mapas semántico.A continuación, diseñamos e implementamos un sistema de SLAM visual capaz de funcionar con robustez en entornos poblados debido a que los robots de servicio trabajan en espacios compartidos con personas. El sistema presentado es capaz de enmascarar las zonas de imagen ocupadas por las personas, lo que aumenta la robustez, la reubicación, la precisión y la reutilización del mapa geométrico. Además, calcula la trayectoria completa de cada persona detectada con respecto al mapa global de la escena, independientemente de la ubicación de la cámara cuando la persona fue detectada.Por último, centramos nuestra investigación en aplicaciones de rescate y seguridad. Desplegamos un equipo de robots en entornos que plantean múltiples retos que implican la planificación de tareas, la planificación del movimiento, la localización y construcción de mapas, la navegación segura, la coordinación y las comunicaciones entre todos los robots. La arquitectura propuesta integra todas las funcionalidades mencionadas, asi como varios aspectos de investigación novedosos para lograr una exploración real, como son: localización basada en características semánticas-topológicas, planificación de despliegue en términos de las características semánticas aprendidas y reconocidas, y construcción de mapas.In order to perform a task, robots need to be able to locate themselves in the environment. If a robot does not know where it is, it is impossible for it to move, reach its goal and complete the task. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, known as SLAM, is a problem extensively studied in the literature for enabling robots to locate themselves in unknown environments. The goal of this thesis is to develop and describe techniques to allow a service robot to understand the environment by incorporating semantic information. This information will also provide an improvement in the localization and navigation of robotic platforms. In addition, we also demonstrate how a simple robot can reliably and efficiently build the semantic maps needed to perform its quotidian tasks. The mapping system as built has the following features. On the map building side we propose the externalization of expensive computations to a cloud server. Additionally, we propose methods to register relevant semantic information with respect to the estimated geometrical maps. Regarding the reuse of the maps built, we propose a method that combines map building with robot navigation to better explore a room in order to obtain a semantic map with the relevant objects for a given mission. Firstly, we develop a semantic Visual SLAM algorithm that merges traditional with known objects in the estimated map. We use a monocular EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) SLAM system that has mainly been focused on producing geometric maps composed simply of points or edges but without any associated meaning or semantic content. The non-annotated map is built using only the information extracted from an image sequence. The semantic or annotated parts of the map –the objects– are estimated using the information in the image sequence and the precomputed object models. As a second step we improve the EKF SLAM presented previously by designing and implementing a visual SLAM system based on a distributed framework. The expensive map optimization and storage is allocated as a service in the Cloud, while a light camera tracking client runs on a local computer. The robot’s onboard computers are freed from most of the computation, the only extra requirement being an internet connection. The next step is to exploit the semantic information that we are able to generate to see how to improve the navigation of a robot. The contribution of this thesis is focused on 3D sensing which we use to design and implement a semantic mapping system. We then design and implement a visual SLAM system able to perform robustly in populated environments due to service robots work in environments where people are present. The system is able to mask the image regions occupied by people out of the rigid SLAM pipeline, which boosts the robustness, the relocation, the accuracy and the reusability of the geometrical map. In addition, it estimates the full trajectory of each detected person with respect to the scene global map, irrespective of the location of the moving camera at the point when the people were imaged. Finally, we focus our research on rescue and security applications. The deployment of a multirobot team in confined environments poses multiple challenges that involve task planning, motion planning, localization and mapping, safe navigation, coordination and communications among all the robots. The architecture integrates, jointly with all the above-mentioned functionalities, several novel features to achieve real exploration: localization based on semantic-topological features, deployment planning in terms of the semantic features learned and recognized, and map building.<br /

    Kimera: from SLAM to Spatial Perception with 3D Dynamic Scene Graphs

    Humans are able to form a complex mental model of the environment they move in. This mental model captures geometric and semantic aspects of the scene, describes the environment at multiple levels of abstractions (e.g., objects, rooms, buildings), includes static and dynamic entities and their relations (e.g., a person is in a room at a given time). In contrast, current robots' internal representations still provide a partial and fragmented understanding of the environment, either in the form of a sparse or dense set of geometric primitives (e.g., points, lines, planes, voxels) or as a collection of objects. This paper attempts to reduce the gap between robot and human perception by introducing a novel representation, a 3D Dynamic Scene Graph(DSG), that seamlessly captures metric and semantic aspects of a dynamic environment. A DSG is a layered graph where nodes represent spatial concepts at different levels of abstraction, and edges represent spatio-temporal relations among nodes. Our second contribution is Kimera, the first fully automatic method to build a DSG from visual-inertial data. Kimera includes state-of-the-art techniques for visual-inertial SLAM, metric-semantic 3D reconstruction, object localization, human pose and shape estimation, and scene parsing. Our third contribution is a comprehensive evaluation of Kimera in real-life datasets and photo-realistic simulations, including a newly released dataset, uHumans2, which simulates a collection of crowded indoor and outdoor scenes. Our evaluation shows that Kimera achieves state-of-the-art performance in visual-inertial SLAM, estimates an accurate 3D metric-semantic mesh model in real-time, and builds a DSG of a complex indoor environment with tens of objects and humans in minutes. Our final contribution shows how to use a DSG for real-time hierarchical semantic path-planning.     Visual Place Recognition for Autonomous Robots

    Autonomous robotics has been the subject of great interest within the research community over the past few decades. Its applications are wide-spread, ranging from health-care to manufacturing, goods transportation to home deliveries, site-maintenance to construction, planetary explorations to rescue operations and many others, including but not limited to agriculture, defence, commerce, leisure and extreme environments. At the core of robot autonomy lies the problem of localisation, i.e, knowing where it is and within the robotics community, this problem is termed as place recognition. Place recognition using only visual input is termed as Visual Place Recognition (VPR) and refers to the ability of an autonomous system to recall a previously visited place using only visual input, under changing viewpoint, illumination and seasonal conditions, and given computational and storage constraints. This thesis is a collection of 4 inter-linked, mutually-relevant but branching-out topics within VPR: 1) What makes a place/image worthy for VPR?, 2) How to define a state-of-the-art in VPR?, 3) Do VPR techniques designed for ground-based platforms extend to aerial platforms? and 4) Can a handcrafted VPR technique outperform deep-learning-based VPR techniques? Each of these questions is a dedicated, peer-reviewed chapter in this thesis and the author attempts to answer these questions to the best of his abilities. The worthiness of a place essentially refers to the salience and distinctiveness of the content in the image of this place. This salience is modelled as a framework, namely memorable-maps, comprising of 3 conjoint criteria: a) Human-memorability of an image, 2) Staticity and 3) Information content. Because a large number of VPR techniques have been proposed over the past 10-15 years, and due to the variation of employed VPR datasets and metrics for evaluation, the correct state-of-the-art remains ambiguous. The author levels this playing field by deploying 10 contemporary techniques on a common platform and use the most challenging VPR datasets to provide a holistic performance comparison. This platform is then extended to aerial place recognition datasets to answer the 3rd question above. Finally, the author designs a novel, handcrafted, compute-efficient and training-free VPR technique that outperforms state-of-the-art VPR techniques on 5 different VPR datasets

    Modeling the environment with egocentric vision systems

    Cada vez más sistemas autónomos, ya sean robots o sistemas de asistencia, están presentes en nuestro día a día. Este tipo de sistemas interactúan y se relacionan con su entorno y para ello necesitan un modelo de dicho entorno. En función de las tareas que deben realizar, la información o el detalle necesario del modelo varía. Desde detallados modelos 3D para sistemas de navegación autónomos, a modelos semánticos que incluyen información importante para el usuario como el tipo de área o qué objetos están presentes. La creación de estos modelos se realiza a través de las lecturas de los distintos sensores disponibles en el sistema. Actualmente, gracias a su pequeño tamaño, bajo precio y la gran información que son capaces de capturar, las cámaras son sensores incluidos en todos los sistemas autónomos. El objetivo de esta tesis es el desarrollar y estudiar nuevos métodos para la creación de modelos del entorno a distintos niveles semánticos y con distintos niveles de precisión. Dos puntos importantes caracterizan el trabajo desarrollado en esta tesis: - El uso de cámaras con punto de vista egocéntrico o en primera persona ya sea en un robot o en un sistema portado por el usuario (wearable). En este tipo de sistemas, las cámaras son solidarias al sistema móvil sobre el que van montadas. En los últimos años han aparecido muchos sistemas de visión wearables, utilizados para multitud de aplicaciones, desde ocio hasta asistencia de personas. - El uso de sistemas de visión omnidireccional, que se distinguen por su gran campo de visión, incluyendo mucha más información en cada imagen que las cámara convencionales. Sin embargo plantean nuevas dificultades debido a distorsiones y modelos de proyección más complejos. Esta tesis estudia distintos tipos de modelos del entorno: - Modelos métricos: el objetivo de estos modelos es crear representaciones detalladas del entorno en las que localizar con precisión el sistema autónomo. Ésta tesis se centra en la adaptación de estos modelos al uso de visión omnidireccional, lo que permite capturar más información en cada imagen y mejorar los resultados en la localización. - Modelos topológicos: estos modelos estructuran el entorno en nodos conectados por arcos. Esta representación tiene menos precisión que la métrica, sin embargo, presenta un nivel de abstracción mayor y puede modelar el entorno con más riqueza. %, por ejemplo incluyendo el tipo de área de cada nodo, la localización de objetos importantes o el tipo de conexión entre los distintos nodos. Esta tesis se centra en la creación de modelos topológicos con información adicional sobre el tipo de área de cada nodo y conexión (pasillo, habitación, puertas, escaleras...). - Modelos semánticos: este trabajo también contribuye en la creación de nuevos modelos semánticos, más enfocados a la creación de modelos para aplicaciones en las que el sistema interactúa o asiste a una persona. Este tipo de modelos representan el entorno a través de conceptos cercanos a los usados por las personas.     Low-Cost Multiple-MAV SLAM Using Open Source Software

    We demonstrate a multiple micro aerial vehicle (MAV) system capable of supporting autonomous exploration and navigation in unknown environments using only a sensor commonly found in low-cost, commercially available MAVs—a front-facing monocular camera. We adapt a popular open source monocular SLAM library, ORB-SLAM, to support multiple inputs and present a system capable of effective cross-map alignment that can be theoretically generalized for use with other monocular SLAM libraries. Using our system, a single central ground control station is capable of supporting up to five MAVs simultaneously without a loss in mapping quality as compared to single-MAV ORB-SLAM.
