    Urban Traffic Monitoring and Modeling System: An IoT Solution for Enhancing Road Safety

    Qatar expects more than a million visitors during the 2022 World Cup, which will pose significant challenges. The high number of people will likely cause a rise in road traffic congestion, vehicle crashes, injuries and deaths. To tackle this problem, Naturalistic Driver Behavior can be utilised which will collect and analyze data to estimate the current Qatar traffic system, including traffic data infrastructure, safety planning, and engineering practices and standards. In this paper, an IoT based solution to facilitate such a study in Qatar is proposed. Different data points from a driver are collected and recorded in an unobtrusive manner, such as trip data, GPS coordinates, compass heading, minimum, average, and maximum speed and his driving behavior, including driver's drowsiness level. Analysis of these data points will help in prediction of crashes and road infrastructure improvements to reduce such events. It will also be used for drivers risk assessment and to detect extreme road user behaviors. A framework that will help to visualize and manage this data is also proposed, along with a Deep Learning-based application that detects drowsy driving behavior that netted an 82 percent accuracy.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, conference IINTEC'1

    Convolutional Two-Stream Network Using Multi-Facial Feature Fusion for Driver Fatigue Detection

    Road traffic accidents caused by fatigue driving are common causes of human casualties. In this paper, we present a driver fatigue detection algorithm using two-stream network models with multi-facial features. The algorithm consists of four parts: (1) Positioning mouth and eye with multi-task cascaded convolutional neural networks (MTCNNs). (2) Extracting the static features from a partial facial image. (3) Extracting the dynamic features from a partial facial optical flow. (4) Combining both static and dynamic features using a two-stream neural network to make the classification. The main contribution of this paper is the combination of a two-stream network and multi-facial features for driver fatigue detection. Two-stream networks can combine static and dynamic image information, while partial facial images as network inputs can focus on fatigue-related information, which brings better performance. Moreover, we applied gamma correction to enhance image contrast, which can help our method achieve better results, noted by an increased accuracy of 2% in night environments. Finally, an accuracy of 97.06% was achieved on the National Tsing Hua University Driver Drowsiness Detection (NTHU-DDD) dataset

    Physiological Approach To Characterize Drowsiness In Simulated Flight Operations During Window Of Circadian Low

    Drowsiness is a psycho-physiological transition from awake towards falling sleep and its detection is crucial in aviation industries. It is a common cause for pilot’s error due to unpredictable work hours, longer flight periods, circadian disruption, and insufficient sleep. The pilots’ are prone towards higher level of drowsiness during window of circadian low (2:00 am- 6:00 am). Airplanes require complex operations and lack of alertness increases accidents. Aviation accidents are much disastrous and early drowsiness detection helps to reduce such accidents. This thesis studied physiological signals during drowsiness from 18 commercially-rated pilots in flight simulator. The major aim of the study was to observe the feasibility of physiological signals to predict drowsiness.
