A Survey on Deep Learning-based Architectures for Semantic Segmentation on 2D images
Semantic segmentation is the pixel-wise labelling of an image. Since the
problem is defined at the pixel level, determining image class labels only is
not acceptable, but localising them at the original image pixel resolution is
necessary. Boosted by the extraordinary ability of convolutional neural
networks (CNN) in creating semantic, high level and hierarchical image
features; excessive numbers of deep learning-based 2D semantic segmentation
approaches have been proposed within the last decade. In this survey, we mainly
focus on the recent scientific developments in semantic segmentation,
specifically on deep learning-based methods using 2D images. We started with an
analysis of the public image sets and leaderboards for 2D semantic
segmantation, with an overview of the techniques employed in performance
evaluation. In examining the evolution of the field, we chronologically
categorised the approaches into three main periods, namely pre-and early deep
learning era, the fully convolutional era, and the post-FCN era. We technically
analysed the solutions put forward in terms of solving the fundamental problems
of the field, such as fine-grained localisation and scale invariance. Before
drawing our conclusions, we present a table of methods from all mentioned eras,
with a brief summary of each approach that explains their contribution to the
field. We conclude the survey by discussing the current challenges of the field

Joint Learning of Intrinsic Images and Semantic Segmentation
Semantic segmentation of outdoor scenes is problematic when there are
variations in imaging conditions. It is known that albedo (reflectance) is
invariant to all kinds of illumination effects. Thus, using reflectance images
for semantic segmentation task can be favorable. Additionally, not only
segmentation may benefit from reflectance, but also segmentation may be useful
for reflectance computation. Therefore, in this paper, the tasks of semantic
segmentation and intrinsic image decomposition are considered as a combined
process by exploring their mutual relationship in a joint fashion. To that end,
we propose a supervised end-to-end CNN architecture to jointly learn intrinsic
image decomposition and semantic segmentation. We analyze the gains of
addressing those two problems jointly. Moreover, new cascade CNN architectures
for intrinsic-for-segmentation and segmentation-for-intrinsic are proposed as
single tasks. Furthermore, a dataset of 35K synthetic images of natural
environments is created with corresponding albedo and shading (intrinsics), as
well as semantic labels (segmentation) assigned to each object/scene. The
experiments show that joint learning of intrinsic image decomposition and
semantic segmentation is beneficial for both tasks for natural scenes. Dataset

Land cover mapping at very high resolution with rotation equivariant CNNs: towards small yet accurate models
In remote sensing images, the absolute orientation of objects is arbitrary.
Depending on an object's orientation and on a sensor's flight path, objects of
the same semantic class can be observed in different orientations in the same
image. Equivariance to rotation, in this context understood as responding with
a rotated semantic label map when subject to a rotation of the input image, is
therefore a very desirable feature, in particular for high capacity models,
such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). If rotation equivariance is
encoded in the network, the model is confronted with a simpler task and does
not need to learn specific (and redundant) weights to address rotated versions
of the same object class. In this work we propose a CNN architecture called
Rotation Equivariant Vector Field Network (RotEqNet) to encode rotation
equivariance in the network itself. By using rotating convolutions as building
blocks and passing only the the values corresponding to the maximally
activating orientation throughout the network in the form of orientation
encoding vector fields, RotEqNet treats rotated versions of the same object
with the same filter bank and therefore achieves state-of-the-art performances
even when using very small architectures trained from scratch. We test RotEqNet
in two challenging sub-decimeter resolution semantic labeling problems, and
show that we can perform better than a standard CNN while requiring one order
of magnitude less parameters
Deformable Part-based Fully Convolutional Network for Object Detection
Existing region-based object detectors are limited to regions with fixed box
geometry to represent objects, even if those are highly non-rectangular. In
this paper we introduce DP-FCN, a deep model for object detection which
explicitly adapts to shapes of objects with deformable parts. Without
additional annotations, it learns to focus on discriminative elements and to
align them, and simultaneously brings more invariance for classification and
geometric information to refine localization. DP-FCN is composed of three main
modules: a Fully Convolutional Network to efficiently maintain spatial
resolution, a deformable part-based RoI pooling layer to optimize positions of
parts and build invariance, and a deformation-aware localization module
explicitly exploiting displacements of parts to improve accuracy of bounding
box regression. We experimentally validate our model and show significant
gains. DP-FCN achieves state-of-the-art performances of 83.1% and 80.9% on
