    Optimal packetisation of MPEG-4 using RTP over mobile networks

    The introduction of third-generation wireless networks should result in real-time mobile video communications becoming a reality. Delivery of such video is likely to be facilitated by the realtime transport protocol (RTP). Careful packetisation of the video data is necessary to ensure the optimal trade-off between channel utilisation and error robustness. Theoretical analyses for two basic schemes of MPEG-4 data encapsulation within RTP packets are presented. Simulations over a GPRS (general packet radio service) network are used to validate the analysis of the most efficient scheme. Finally, a motion adaptive system for deriving MPEG-4 video packet sizes is presented. Further simulations demonstrate the benefits of the adaptive system

    The DVB-S2 standard has brought an unprecedented degree of novelty and flexibility in the way IP datagrams or other network level packets can be transmitted over DVB satellite links, with the introduction of an IP-friendly link layer - he continuous Generic Streams - and the adaptive combination of advanced error coding, modulation and spectrum management techniques. Recently approved by the DVB, the Generic Stream Encapsulation (GSE) used for carrying IP datagrams over DVBS2 implements solutions stemmed from a design rationale quite different from the one behind IP encapsulation schemes over its predecessor DVB-S.     Satellites are the transmission medium for providing connectivity and building global, continental, or regional networks around the world (satellite operators effectively use satellites to support Internet traffic), and point-to-point connections are also possible. In practical use, there are combinations of VSAT networks with terrestrial wireless extensions, allowing end users to increase the capabilities offered via satellite. This paper provides selected information on broadband satellite networks using VSAT technology, including available protocols and transmission platforms. The aim of the article is also to present the chosen technical aspects of satellite networks working with the usage of VSAT technology.Satelity stanowią medium transmisyjne dla zapewnienia Ƃącznoƛci i budowy sieci globalnych, kontynentalnych czy regionalnych na caƂym ƛwiecie (operatorzy satelitarni efektywnie wykorzystują satelity do obsƂugi ruchu internetowego), przy czym moĆŒliwe są takĆŒe poƂączenia typu punkt-punkt. W praktycznym uĆŒyciu są kombinacje sieci VSAT z bezprzewodowymi rozszerzeniami naziemnymi, co pozwala zwiększyć uĆŒytkownikom koƄcowym moĆŒliwoƛci oferowane za poƛrednictwem satelity.     Energy-efficient wireless communication

    In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters

    Broadcast quality video over IP

    We consider the problem of designing systems for the transmission of high-quality video signals over certain high-speed segments of the public IP network. Our most important contribution is the definition of a network/coder interface for IP networks which gathers channel state information, and then sets parameters of the video coder to maximize the quality of the signal delivered to the receiver, while remaining fair to other data or video connections. This interface plays a role analogous to that of a Leaky Bucket controller, in that it specifies traffic shaping parameters which result in simultaneous good Quality of Service (QoS) for the source and good network performance. Since the network is not assumed to provide any form of QoS guarantee, fundamental to our construction is a hidden Markov model for the channel, based on which the interface solves a problem of optimal stochastic control, to decide how to configure the encoder. Other contributions are (a) modifications to the standard Internet transport protocol, to make it suitable for the transport of delay-constrained traffic and to gather channel state information, and (b) the design of an error-resilient video coder. Experimental studies reveal that the proposed system is able to stream video signals of the quality of current TV-broadcasts, among hosts in wide-area networks connected to the experimental vBNS backbone
