Our new approach is based on a hybrid Bounding Volume Hierarchy(BVH) that stores osculating toroidal patches in the leaf nodes. The BVH structure accelerates the geometric search for the potential pairs of local surface patches that may intersect or self-intersect. Osculating toroidal patches have second-order contact with C2-continuous freeform surfaces that they approximate, which plays an essential role in improving the precision of various geometric operations on the given surfaces. To support efficient computation of the surface-surface-intersection curve, we design a hybrid binary BVH that is basically a pre-built Rectangle-Swept Sphere(RSS) tree enhanced with osculating toroidal patches in their leaf nodes. Osculating toroidal patches provide efficient and robust solutions to the problem even in the non-trivial cases of handling two freeform surfaces intersecting almost tangentially everywhere. The surface self-intersection problem is considerably more difficult than computing the intersection of two different surfaces, mainly due to the existence of miter points. A self-intersecting surface changes its normal direction dramatically around miter points, located at the open endpoints of the self-intersection curve. This undesirable behavior causes serious problems in the stability of geometric algorithms on self-intersecting surfaces. To facilitate surface self-intersection computation with a stable detection of miter points, we propose a ternary tree structure for the hybrid BVH of freeform surfaces. In particular, we propose a special representation of miter points using sufficiently small quadrangles in the parameter domain of bivariate surfaces and expand ideas to offset surfaces. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new approach using some highly non-trivial examples of freeform surfaces with tangential intersections and miter points. We present a new method for offset curve and surface trimming that detects the self-intersections and eliminates the redundant parts of an offset curve and surface that are closer than the offset distance to the original curve and surface. We first propose an offset trimming method based on constructing geometric constraint equations. We formulate the constraint equations of the self-intersections of an offset curve and surface in the parameter domain of the original curve and surface. Numerical computations based on the regularity and intrinsic properties of the given input curve and surface is carried out to compute the solution of the constraint equations. The method deals with numerical instability around near-singular regions of an offset surface by using osculating tori that can be constructed in a highly stable way, i.e., by offsetting the osculating torii of the given input regular surface. We reveal the branching structure and the terminal points from the complete self-intersection curves of the offset surface. From the observation that the trimming method based on the multivariate equation solving is computationally expensive, we also propose an acceleration technique to trim an offset curve and surface. The alternative method constructs a bounding volume hierarchy specially designed to enclose the offset curve and surface and detects the self-collision of the bounding volumes instead. In the case of an offset surface, the thickness of the bounding volumes is indirectly determined based on the maximum deviations of the positions and the normals between the given input surface patches and their osculating tori. For further acceleration, the bounding volumes are pruned as much as possible during self-collision detection using various geometric constraints imposed on the offset surface. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the new trimming method using several non-trivial test examples of offset trimming. Lastly, we investigate the problem of computing the Voronoi diagram of a freeform surface using the offset trimming technique for surfaces. By trimming the offset surface with a gradually changing offset radius, we compute the boundary of the Voronoi cells that appear in the concave side of the given input surface.     True2Form: 3D Curve Networks from 2D Sketches via Selective Regularization

    International audienceTrue2Form is a sketch-based modeling system that reconstructs 3D curves from typical design sketches. Our approach to infer 3D form from 2D drawings is a novel mathematical framework of insights derived from perception and design literature. We note that designers favor viewpoints that maximally reveal 3D shape information, and strategically sketch descriptive curves that convey intrinsic shape properties, such as curvature, symmetry, or parallelism. Studies indicate that viewers apply these properties selectively to envision a globally consistent 3D shape. We mimic this selective regularization algorithmically, by progressively detecting and enforcing applicable properties, accounting for their global impact on an evolving 3D curve network. Balancing regularity enforcement against sketch fidelity at each step allows us to correct for inaccuracy inherent in free-hand sketching. We perceptually validate our approach by showing agreement between our algorithm and viewers in selecting applicable regularities. We further evaluate our solution by: reconstructing a range of 3D models from diversely sourced sketches; comparisons to prior art; and visual comparison to both ground-truth and 3D reconstructions by designers

    Towards an Intelligent Framework for Pressure-based 3D Curve Drawing

    Pen pressure is an input channel typically available in tablet pen device. To date, little attention has been paid to the use of pressure in the domain of graphical interaction, its usage largely limited to drawing and painting program, typically for varying brush characteristic such as stroke width, opacity and color. In this paper, we explore the use of pressure in 3D curve drawing. The act of controlling pressure using pen, pencil and brush in real life appears effortless, but to mimic this natural ability to control pressure using a pressure sensitive pen in the realm of electronic medium is difficult. Previous pressure based interaction work have proposed various signal processing techniques to improve the accuracy in pressure control, but a one-for-all signal processing solution tend not to work for different curve types. We propose instead a framework which applies signal processing techniques tuned to individual curve type. A neural network classifier is used as a curve classifier. Based on the classification, a custom combination of signal processing techniques is then applied. Results obtained point to the feasibility and advantage of the approach.Comment: This paper was rejected from GI 2014.     Proximity Queries for Absolutely Continuous Parametric Curves

    In motion planning problems for autonomous robots, such as self-driving cars, the robot must ensure that its planned path is not in close proximity to obstacles in the environment. However, the problem of evaluating the proximity is generally non-convex and serves as a significant computational bottleneck for motion planning algorithms. In this paper, we present methods for a general class of absolutely continuous parametric curves to compute: (i) the minimum separating distance, (ii) tolerance verification, and (iii) collision detection. Our methods efficiently compute bounds on obstacle proximity by bounding the curve in a convex region. This bound is based on an upper bound on the curve arc length that can be expressed in closed form for a useful class of parametric curves including curves with trigonometric or polynomial bases. We demonstrate the computational efficiency and accuracy of our approach through numerical simulations of several proximity problems.Comment: Proceedings of Robotics: Science and System

    A review of geometry representation and processing methods for cartesian and multiaxial robot-based additive manufacturing

    Nowadays, robot-based additive manufacturing (RBAM) is emerging as a potential solution to increase manufacturing flexibility. Such technology allows to change the orientation of the material deposition unit during printing, making it possible to fabricate complex parts with optimized material distribution. In this context, the representation of parts geometries and their subsequent processing become aspects of primary importance. In particular, part orientation, multiaxial deposition, slicing, and infill strategies must be properly evaluated so as to obtain satisfactory outputs and avoid printing failures. Some advanced features can be found in commercial slicing software (e.g., adaptive slicing, advanced path strategies, and non-planar slicing), although the procedure may result excessively constrained due to the limited number of available options. Several approaches and algorithms have been proposed for each phase and their combination must be determined accurately to achieve the best results. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art works addressing the primary methods for the representation of geometries and the subsequent geometry processing for RBAM. For each category, tools and software found in the literature and commercially available are discussed. Comparison tables are then reported to assist in the selection of the most appropriate approaches. The presented review can be helpful for designers, researchers and practitioners to identify possible future directions and open issues
