    The subconvexity problem for \GL_{2}

    Get PDF
    Generalizing and unifying prior results, we solve the subconvexity problem for the LL-functions of \GL_{1} and \GL_{2} automorphic representations over a fixed number field, uniformly in all aspects. A novel feature of the present method is the softness of our arguments; this is largely due to a consistent use of canonically normalized period relations, such as those supplied by the work of Waldspurger and Ichino--Ikeda.Comment: Almost final version to appear in Publ. Archimedean theory and ϵ\epsilon-factors for the Asai Rankin-Selberg integrals

    Full text link
    In this paper, we partially complete the local Rankin-Selberg theory of Asai LL-functions and ϵ\epsilon-factors as introduced by Flicker and Kable. In particular, we establish the relevant local functional equation at Archimedean places and prove the equality between Rankin-Selberg's and Langlands-Shahidi's ϵ\epsilon-factors at every place. Our proofs work uniformly for any characteristic zero local field and use as only input the global functional equation and a globalization result for a dense subset of tempered representations that we infer from work of Finis-Lapid-M\"uller. These results are used in another paper by the author to establish an explicit Plancherel decomposition for GLn(F)\GLn(E)\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\backslash \mathrm{GL}_n(E), E/FE/F a quadratic extension of local fields, with applications to the Ichino-Ikeda and formal degree conjecture for unitary groups

    Distribution of periodic torus orbits and Duke's theorem for cubic fields

    Full text link
    We study periodic torus orbits on spaces of lattices. Using the action of the group of adelic points of the underlying tori, we define a natural equivalence relation on these orbits, and show that the equivalence classes become uniformly distributed. This is a cubic analogue of Duke's theorem about the distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface: suitably interpreted, the ideal classes of a cubic totally real field are equidistributed in the modular 5-fold SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R). In particular, this proves (a stronger form of) the folklore conjecture that the collection of maximal compact flats in SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R) of volume less than V becomes equidistributed as V goes to infinity. The proof combines subconvexity estimates, measure classification, and local harmonic analysis.Comment: Annals of Maths. (to appear) typos corrected; references update

    Non-archimedean Yomdin-Gromov parametrizations and points of bounded height

    Full text link
    We prove an analogue of the Yomdin-Gromov Lemma for pp-adic definable sets and more broadly in a non-archimedean, definable context. This analogue keeps track of piecewise approximation by Taylor polynomials, a nontrivial aspect in the totally disconnected case. We apply this result to bound the number of rational points of bounded height on the transcendental part of pp-adic subanalytic sets, and to bound the dimension of the set of complex polynomials of bounded degree lying on an algebraic variety defined over C((t))\mathbb{C} ((t)), in analogy to results by Pila and Wilkie, resp. by Bombieri and Pila. Along the way we prove, for definable functions in a general context of non-archimedean geometry, that local Lipschitz continuity implies piecewise global Lipschitz continuity.Comment: 54 pages; revised, section 5.6 adde
