Creating a Taxonomy of Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability, Stakeholders, Environment, Green IS, and Green IT: A Literature Review

    Get PDF
The main goal of this article is to link Green Information Systems (Green IS) and Green Information Technology (Green IT) to the overall sustainability topic. Therefore, the authors provide a taxonomy in the form of a matrix to relate the relevant concepts to each other. The quest is to identify missing relationships and establish concepts relationships. Papers from six major journals and one conference between 2006 and 2010 were examined in order to shed light on the relationship matrix. The article delivers definitions, insights into usage of terminology and existing boundaries and links amongst definitions. Besides the comprehensive overview, the authors were able to identify new links between the relevant terms. This was done by reversing given relationship definitions between the relevant terms and by using analogies

A Systematic Literature Review on Strategic Information Systems Planning: Insights from the Past Decade

Strategic information system planning (SISP) has been an important concern for top business and information systems (IS) managers. This paper employs a systematic literature review approach for 12 top ranking IS journals in the past 10 years in order to classify them based on their focus levels, research topics, and research methods. Our search resulted in 45 papers which are categorized into four focus groups, three context groups and six topic groups. The results indicate that most of the research focus to date has been on the alignment and development of plans. Researchers have paid more attention to the context as the focus of research, the firm as research context and the quantitative approach as research method. The results may be beneficial to show new researchers the current status and research gaps and for practitioners who want to ascertain valuable topics in the literature that help them with their business problems. The impact of shared domain knowledge on strategic information systems planning and alignment

    Get PDF
Background: Lack of alignment or harmony between information technology (IT) and business imperatives continues to plague organisations despite decades of research. Strategic information systems planning (SISP) is the process of coordinating the relationship between IT and the business in order to steer alignment. Shared domain knowledge (SDK) is a factor that is posited as important for improving both SISP and alignment, which is theorised to be the main outcome of SISP. Objectives: The aim of this article is to examine the impact of SDK on SISP and alignment. Method: Data were gathered from management consultants in a large, global IT organisation, through the use of a structured questionnaire, and analysed. Results: It was shown that SDK positively influences SISP characteristics and the alignment outcome. Specifically, it was found that high levels of rationality in SISP positively influenced the intellectual dimension of alignment, whilst IT manager participation in business planning influenced the social dimension of alignment. SDK was found to have a bearing on all of the SISP characteristics measured (i.e. rationality, adaptation, business planning-SISP integration and IT manager participation in business planning). SDK was also found to positively impact both the intellectual and social dimensions of alignment. Conclusion: The implications of the findings are that fostering a knowledge sharing environment in organisations will help improve alignment, as well as the formal processes designed to steer alignment such as SISP

Relationship and Innovation Orientation in a Business-to-Business Context

Market orientation and innovation orientation, including their relationship with firm performance, are well-debated in prevailing marketing literature. Interestingly, relationship orientation, as an extension of market orientation, is yet to be subjected to similar investigation. While relationship orientation suggests that firms should invest in building relationships with clients and suppliers to generate improved financial performance, innovation orientation proposes that customers will prefer superior and innovative products/services and it supports a learning philosophy. Torn between two shores, the result is often that practitioners are confused as to what the desired orientation for the firm should be. This paper considers the relationship of both orientations with firm performance in business-to-business (B2B) markets simultaneously, and in particular examines the mediating effect of innovation on the relationship orientation-firm performance relationship. By employing published scales for innovation and relationship orientation, cross-sectional data were collected from 181 business-to-business managers in South African firms. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test for scale reliability and validity, while the hypothesized relationships between constructs were considered through structural equation modelling and partial least squares analysis. The paper provides valuable insights for measuring these constructs in an emerging market context and suggests a balanced approach to adopting these strategic orientations in B2B markets. The results suggest that practitioners and researchers should pay attention to both orientations simultaneously, because jointly they are associated with better firm performance

Strategic information system planning (SISP) as a management practice and process helps organizations to identify as well as selecting suitable computer- based systems for improving their organizational performance. Although, as an area of study, SISP has gained much attention among academics and practitioners, research that focuses on SISP in government agencies has not been emphasized. Given the limited number of studies on SISP in government agencies, this study initiated an attempt to investigate SISP among government agencies in Malaysia. The objectives of this study were to determine the relationship between SISP practices and performance of government agencies as well as to determine whether SISP contexts and SISP approaches moderate the relationship between SISP practices and performance of government agencies. More specifically, the study adopted the contingency framework to examine the moderating effects of SISP contexts and SISP approaches on the relationship between SISP practices and performance of government agencies in Malaysia. Questionnaires were sent to 254 government agencies that were registered with the Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU). Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple and hierarchical regressions were used to analyze the data. Based on the analyses of the data obtained from the respondents, the results of the study indicated positive relationships between SISP practices and performance of the government agencies. Furthermore, the results also showed that SISP contexts and SISP approaches moderate the relationship between SISP practices and performance of the government agencies. The findings of this study appear to support the notion that SISP practices are related to the performance of government agencies. The association between SISP practices and the performance of government agencies as well as the moderating effects of SISP contexts and SISP approaches further suggests implications to practitioners, policy - makers and government agencie

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Purpose This study aims to examine the direct influence of strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices on business value creation while accounting for the moderating and mediating roles of strategic orientation. Design/methodology/approach It used data from 118 CSR-intensive multinational subsidiaries operating in five major different industries in Ghana and applied hierarchical regression and bootstrapping via Hayes’ PROCESS Macro for the analyses. Findings The results showed that strategic CSR practices comprising of strategic CSR planning, strategic CSR implementation and strategic CSR positioning contribute positively and significantly to business value creation of multinational subsidiaries. Moreover, it found that strategic orientation has directly predicted business value creation significantly and further mediated the nexus between business value creation and the three strategic CSR practices. However, it did not moderate the influence of strategic CSR practices on business value creation. Originality/value The study validates and adds to the knowledge on strategic CSR and business value creation theory by demonstrating that strategic CSR practices of multinational corporation (MNCs) are parallel to their subsidiaries’ commitment to shared growth in host countries. Similarly, it provides a better understanding of the dual roles of MNCs’ strategic orientation on strategic CSR practices and business value creation, thereby offering valuable information about the underlying economic process and context that can affect the strategic business value of firms’ strategic CSR practices

A model of influences of environmental stakeholders on strategic information systems planning success in an enterprise

Worldwide spending of enterprises on information technologies (IT) in 2011 is projected to total USD 2.6 trillion with 350 enterprises each investing more than USD 1 billion. Despite such large and rapidly growing investment figures, the success rates of IT deployment projects over the past 20 years remained relatively low: approximately half of IT deployment projects were unsuccessful. Literature review reveals that inadequate strategic information system planning (SISP) is one of the main reasons for low deployment success rates of IT deployment projects and, thus, one of the current critical IT management issues. For this reason researchers and practitioners in the SISP field are currently directing their efforts into expanding the traditional understanding of SISP as a pure IT planning activity. In addition to the activities dedicated to the planning of IT investments, new SISP models should also include the contextual activities that enable adaptation of the deployed IT to the environment and knowledge transfer from the environment. In this paper, the authors propose an extended SISP model that includes influences of environmental stakeholders. The developed SISP model was empirically tested on a sample from the population of 1000 largest enterprises in Slovenia. The authors believe that the findings of their research and the suggested extended SISP model will improve understanding of SISP success factors in enterprises and consequently enable them to manage their IT investments with greater success

Includes bibliographical references. Most of today's knowledge of Business-to-Business marketing is grounded on studies conducted in so-called western countries. Recently some researchers have started to question the validity of concepts, ideas and measures conceived in developed markets to explain business marketing phenomena in non-western contexts. Moreover research has attributed this gap in the literature on the relative absence of Business-to-Business marketing research from emerging, non-western countries (see, for example, Biggemann and Fam, 2011.) In emerging markets firms also operate in large networks that contains multiple, complex, direct and indirect business relationships among buyers and sellers. The thesis draws on four different empirical studies to integrate key sets of knowledge spawned from the realms of the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing group (IMP) to observe Business-to-Business relationships in a South African context
