Lower Bounds on Time-Space Trade-Offs for Approximate Near Neighbors
We show tight lower bounds for the entire trade-off between space and query
time for the Approximate Near Neighbor search problem. Our lower bounds hold in
a restricted model of computation, which captures all hashing-based approaches.
In articular, our lower bound matches the upper bound recently shown in
[Laarhoven 2015] for the random instance on a Euclidean sphere (which we show
in fact extends to the entire space using the techniques from
[Andoni, Razenshteyn 2015]).
We also show tight, unconditional cell-probe lower bounds for one and two
probes, improving upon the best known bounds from [Panigrahy, Talwar, Wieder
2010]. In particular, this is the first space lower bound (for any static data
structure) for two probes which is not polynomially smaller than for one probe.
To show the result for two probes, we establish and exploit a connection to

Optimal Hashing-based Time-Space Trade-offs for Approximate Near Neighbors

We show tight upper and lower bounds for time-space trade-offs for the
-Approximate Near Neighbor Search problem. For the -dimensional Euclidean
space and -point datasets, we develop a data structure with space and query time for
every such that: \begin{equation} c^2 \sqrt{\rho_q} +
(c^2 - 1) \sqrt{\rho_u} = \sqrt{2c^2 - 1}. \end{equation}
This is the first data structure that achieves sublinear query time and
near-linear space for every approximation factor , improving upon
[Kapralov, PODS 2015]. The data structure is a culmination of a long line of
work on the problem for all space regimes; it builds on Spherical
Locality-Sensitive Filtering [Becker, Ducas, Gama, Laarhoven, SODA 2016] and
data-dependent hashing [Andoni, Indyk, Nguyen, Razenshteyn, SODA 2014] [Andoni,
Razenshteyn, STOC 2015].
Our matching lower bounds are of two types: conditional and unconditional.
First, we prove tightness of the whole above trade-off in a restricted model of
computation, which captures all known hashing-based approaches. We then show
unconditional cell-probe lower bounds for one and two probes that match the
above trade-off for , improving upon the best known lower bounds
from [Panigrahy, Talwar, Wieder, FOCS 2010]. In particular, this is the first
space lower bound (for any static data structure) for two probes which is not
polynomially smaller than the one-probe bound. To show the result for two

GeantV: Results from the prototype of concurrent vector particle transport simulation in HEP
Full detector simulation was among the largest CPU consumer in all CERN
experiment software stacks for the first two runs of the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC). In the early 2010's, the projections were that simulation demands would
scale linearly with luminosity increase, compensated only partially by an
increase of computing resources. The extension of fast simulation approaches to
more use cases, covering a larger fraction of the simulation budget, is only
part of the solution due to intrinsic precision limitations. The remainder
corresponds to speeding-up the simulation software by several factors, which is
out of reach using simple optimizations on the current code base. In this
context, the GeantV R&D project was launched, aiming to redesign the legacy
particle transport codes in order to make them benefit from fine-grained
parallelism features such as vectorization, but also from increased code and
data locality. This paper presents extensively the results and achievements of
this R&D, as well as the conclusions and lessons learnt from the beta

Non-blocking Priority Queue based on Skiplists with Relaxed Semantics
Priority queues are data structures that store information in an orderly fashion. They are of tremendous importance because they are an integral part of many applications, like Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm, MST algorithms, priority schedulers, and so on.
Since priority queues by nature have high contention on the delete_min operation, the design of an efficient priority queue should involve an intelligent choice of the data structure as well as relaxation bounds on the data structure. Lock-free data structures provide higher scalability as well as progress guarantee than a lock-based data structure. That is another factor to be considered in the priority queue design.
We present a relaxed non-blocking priority queue based on skiplists. We address all the design issues mentioned above in our priority queue. Use of skiplists allows multiple threads to concurrently access different parts of the skiplist quickly, whereas relaxing the priority queue delete_min operation distributes contention over the skiplist instead of just at the front. Furthermore, a non-blocking implementation guarantees that the system will make progress even when some process fails.
Our priority queue is internally composed of several priority queues, one for each thread and one shared priority queue common to all threads. Each thread selects the best value from its local priority queue and the shared priority queue and returns the value. In case a thread is unable to delete an item, it tries to spy items from other threads\u27 local priority queues.
We experimentally and theoretically show the correctness of our data structure. We also compare the performance of our data structure with other variations like priority queues based on coarse-grained skiplists for both relaxed and non-relaxed semantics
Two-Hop Routing with Traffic-Differentiation for QoS Guarantee in Wireless Sensor Networks
This paper proposes a Traffic-Differentiated Two-Hop Routing protocol for
Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It targets WSN
applications having different types of data traffic with several priorities.
The protocol achieves to increase Packet Reception Ratio (PRR) and reduce
end-to-end delay while considering multi-queue priority policy, two-hop
neighborhood information, link reliability and power efficiency. The protocol
is modular and utilizes effective methods for estimating the link metrics.
Numerical results show that the proposed protocol is a feasible solution to
addresses QoS service differenti- ation for traffic with different priorities.Comment: 13 page
