Multimedia delivery in the future internet
The term âNetworked Mediaâ implies that all kinds of media including text, image, 3D graphics, audio
and video are produced, distributed, shared, managed and consumed on-line through various networks,
like the Internet, Fiber, WiFi, WiMAX, GPRS, 3G and so on, in a convergent manner [1]. This white
paper is the contribution of the Media Delivery Platform (MDP) cluster and aims to cover the Networked
challenges of the Networked Media in the transition to the Future of the Internet.
Internet has evolved and changed the way we work and live. End users of the Internet have been confronted
with a bewildering range of media, services and applications and of technological innovations concerning
media formats, wireless networks, terminal types and capabilities. And there is little evidence that the pace
of this innovation is slowing. Today, over one billion of users access the Internet on regular basis, more
than 100 million users have downloaded at least one (multi)media file and over 47 millions of them do so
regularly, searching in more than 160 Exabytes1 of content. In the near future these numbers are expected
to exponentially rise. It is expected that the Internet content will be increased by at least a factor of 6, rising
to more than 990 Exabytes before 2012, fuelled mainly by the users themselves. Moreover, it is envisaged
that in a near- to mid-term future, the Internet will provide the means to share and distribute (new)
multimedia content and services with superior quality and striking flexibility, in a trusted and personalized
way, improving citizensâ quality of life, working conditions, edutainment and safety.
In this evolving environment, new transport protocols, new multimedia encoding schemes, cross-layer inthe
network adaptation, machine-to-machine communication (including RFIDs), rich 3D content as well as
community networks and the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays are expected to generate new models of
interaction and cooperation, and be able to support enhanced perceived quality-of-experience (PQoE) and
innovative applications âon the moveâ, like virtual collaboration environments, personalised services/
media, virtual sport groups, on-line gaming, edutainment. In this context, the interaction with content
combined with interactive/multimedia search capabilities across distributed repositories, opportunistic P2P
networks and the dynamic adaptation to the characteristics of diverse mobile terminals are expected to
contribute towards such a vision.
Based on work that has taken place in a number of EC co-funded projects, in Framework Program 6 (FP6)
and Framework Program 7 (FP7), a group of experts and technology visionaries have voluntarily
contributed in this white paper aiming to describe the status, the state-of-the art, the challenges and the way
ahead in the area of Content Aware media delivery platforms
Generating Multimedia Components for M-Learning
The paper proposes a solution to generate template based multimedia components for instruction and learning available both for computer based applications and for mobile devices. The field of research is situated at the intersection of computer science, mobile tools and e-learning and is generically named mobile learning or M-learning. The research goal is to provide access to computer based training resources from any location and to adapt the training content to the specific features of mobile devices, communication environment, users' preferences and users' knowledge. Access Interfaces for Open Archival Information Systems based on the OAI-PMH and the OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive Services
In recent years, a variety of digital repository and archival systems have
been developed and adopted. All of these systems aim at hosting a variety of
compound digital assets and at providing tools for storing, managing and
accessing those assets. This paper will focus on the definition of common and
standardized access interfaces that could be deployed across such diverse
digital respository and archival systems. The proposed interfaces are based on
the two formal specifications that have recently emerged from the Digital
Library community: The Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting
(OAI-PMH) and the NISO OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive Services
(OpenURL Standard). As will be described, the former allows for the retrieval
of batches of XML-based representations of digital assets, while the latter
facilitates the retrieval of disseminations of a specific digital asset or of
one or more of its constituents. The core properties of the proposed interfaces
are explained in terms of the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information

MediaSync: Handbook on Multimedia Synchronization
This book provides an approachable overview of the most recent advances in the fascinating field of media synchronization (mediasync), gathering contributions from the most representative and influential experts. Understanding the challenges of this field in the current multi-sensory, multi-device, and multi-protocol world is not an easy task. The book revisits the foundations of mediasync, including theoretical frameworks and models, highlights ongoing research efforts, like hybrid broadband broadcast (HBB) delivery and users' perception modeling (i.e., Quality of Experience or QoE), and paves the way for the future (e.g., towards the deployment of multi-sensory and ultra-realistic experiences). Although many advances around mediasync have been devised and deployed, this area of research is getting renewed attention to overcome remaining challenges in the next-generation (heterogeneous and ubiquitous) media ecosystem. Given the significant advances in this research area, its current relevance and the multiple disciplines it involves, the availability of a reference book on mediasync becomes necessary. WCAM: secured video surveillance with digital rights management
The WCAM project aims to provide an integrated system for secure delivery of video surveillance data over a wireless network, while remaining scalable and robust to transmission errors. To achieve these goals., the content is encoded in Motion-JPEG2000 and streamed with a specific RTP protocol encapsulation to prevent the loss of packets containing the most essential data. Protection of the video data is performed at content level using the standardized JPSEC syntax along with flexible encryption of quality layers or resolution levels. This selective encryption respects the JPEG2000 structure of the stream, not only ensuring end-to-end ciphered delivery, but also enabling dynamic content adaptation within the wireless network (quality of service, adaptation to the user's terminal). A DRM (Digital Rights Management) solution, called OpenSDRM is added to manage all authenticated peers on the WLAN (from end-users to cameras), as well as to manage the rights to access and display conditionally the video data. This whole integrated architecture addresses several security problems such as data encryption, integrity, access control and rights management. From OPIMA to MPEG IPMP-X: A standard's history across R&D projects
This paper describes the work performed by a number of companies and universities who have been working as a consortium under the umbrella of the European Union Framework Programme 5 (FP5), Information Society Technologies (IST) research program, in order to provide a set of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies and architectures, aiming at helping to reduce the copyright circumvention risks, that have been threatening the music and film industries in their transition from the âanalogueâ to âdigitalâ age. The paper starts by addressing some of the earlier standardization efforts in the DRM arena, namely, Open Platform Initiative for Multimedia Access (OPIMA). One of the described FP5 IST projects, Open Components for Controlled Access to Multimedia Material (OCCAMM), has developed the OPIMA vision. The paper addresses also the Motion Pictures Expert GroupâMPEG DRM work, starting from the MPEG Intellectual Propriety Management and ProtectionâIPMP âHooksâ, towards the MPEG IPMP Extensions, which has originated the first DRM-related standard (MPEG-4 Part 13, called IPMP Extensions or IPMP-X) ever released by ISO up to the present days.2 The paper clarifies how the FP5 IST project MPEG Open Security for Embedded Systems (MOSES), has extended the OPIMA interfaces and architecture to achieve compliance with the MPEG IPMP-X standard, and how it has contributed to the achievement of âconsensusâ and to the specification, implementation (Reference Software) and validation (Conformance Testing) of the MPEG IPMP-X standard.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
