Vertex Sparsifiers: New Results from Old Techniques
Given a capacitated graph and a set of terminals ,
how should we produce a graph only on the terminals so that every
(multicommodity) flow between the terminals in could be supported in
with low congestion, and vice versa? (Such a graph is called a
flow-sparsifier for .) What if we want to be a "simple" graph? What if
we allow to be a convex combination of simple graphs?
Improving on results of Moitra [FOCS 2009] and Leighton and Moitra [STOC
2010], we give efficient algorithms for constructing: (a) a flow-sparsifier
that maintains congestion up to a factor of , where , (b) a convex combination of trees over the terminals that maintains
congestion up to a factor of , and (c) for a planar graph , a
convex combination of planar graphs that maintains congestion up to a constant
factor. This requires us to give a new algorithm for the 0-extension problem,
the first one in which the preimages of each terminal are connected in .
Moreover, this result extends to minor-closed families of graphs.
Our improved bounds immediately imply improved approximation guarantees for

Optimal Euclidean spanners: really short, thin and lanky
In a seminal STOC'95 paper, titled "Euclidean spanners: short, thin and
lanky", Arya et al. devised a construction of Euclidean (1+\eps)-spanners
that achieves constant degree, diameter , and weight , and has running time . This construction
applies to -point constant-dimensional Euclidean spaces. Moreover, Arya et
al. conjectured that the weight bound can be improved by a logarithmic factor,
without increasing the degree and the diameter of the spanner, and within the
same running time.
This conjecture of Arya et al. became a central open problem in the area of
Euclidean spanners.
In this paper we resolve the long-standing conjecture of Arya et al. in the
affirmative. Specifically, we present a construction of spanners with the same
stretch, degree, diameter, and running time, as in Arya et al.'s result, but
with optimal weight .
Moreover, our result is more general in three ways. First, we demonstrate
that the conjecture holds true not only in constant-dimensional Euclidean
spaces, but also in doubling metrics. Second, we provide a general tradeoff
between the three involved parameters, which is tight in the entire range.
Third, we devise a transformation that decreases the lightness of spanners in
general metrics, while keeping all their other parameters in check. Our main

Local tests of global entanglement and a counterexample to the generalized area law
We introduce a technique for applying quantum expanders in a distributed
fashion, and use it to solve two basic questions: testing whether a bipartite
quantum state shared by two parties is the maximally entangled state and
disproving a generalized area law. In the process these two questions which
appear completely unrelated turn out to be two sides of the same coin.
Strikingly in both cases a constant amount of resources are used to verify a

Complexity of Token Swapping and its Variants
In the Token Swapping problem we are given a graph with a token placed on
each vertex. Each token has exactly one destination vertex, and we try to move
all the tokens to their destinations, using the minimum number of swaps, i.e.,
operations of exchanging the tokens on two adjacent vertices. As the main
result of this paper, we show that Token Swapping is -hard parameterized
by the length of a shortest sequence of swaps. In fact, we prove that, for
any computable function , it cannot be solved in time where is the number of vertices of the input graph, unless the ETH
fails. This lower bound almost matches the trivial -time algorithm.
We also consider two generalizations of the Token Swapping, namely Colored
Token Swapping (where the tokens have different colors and tokens of the same
color are indistinguishable), and Subset Token Swapping (where each token has a
set of possible destinations). To complement the hardness result, we prove that
even the most general variant, Subset Token Swapping, is FPT in nowhere-dense
graph classes.
Finally, we consider the complexities of all three problems in very
restricted classes of graphs: graphs of bounded treewidth and diameter, stars,
cliques, and paths, trying to identify the borderlines between polynomial and

Distributed Testing of Excluded Subgraphs
We study property testing in the context of distributed computing, under the
classical CONGEST model. It is known that testing whether a graph is
triangle-free can be done in a constant number of rounds, where the constant
depends on how far the input graph is from being triangle-free. We show that,
for every connected 4-node graph H, testing whether a graph is H-free can be
done in a constant number of rounds too. The constant also depends on how far
the input graph is from being H-free, and the dependence is identical to the
one in the case of testing triangles. Hence, in particular, testing whether a
graph is K_4-free, and testing whether a graph is C_4-free can be done in a
constant number of rounds (where K_k denotes the k-node clique, and C_k denotes
the k-node cycle). On the other hand, we show that testing K_k-freeness and
C_k-freeness for k>4 appear to be much harder. Specifically, we investigate two
natural types of generic algorithms for testing H-freeness, called DFS tester
and BFS tester. The latter captures the previously known algorithm to test the
presence of triangles, while the former captures our generic algorithm to test
the presence of a 4-node graph pattern H. We prove that both DFS and BFS
testers fail to test K_k-freeness and C_k-freeness in a constant number of
rounds for k>4
Polynomial-Time Space-Optimal Silent Self-Stabilizing Minimum-Degree Spanning Tree Construction
Motivated by applications to sensor networks, as well as to many other areas,
this paper studies the construction of minimum-degree spanning trees. We
consider the classical node-register state model, with a weakly fair scheduler,
and we present a space-optimal \emph{silent} self-stabilizing construction of
minimum-degree spanning trees in this model. Computing a spanning tree with
minimum degree is NP-hard. Therefore, we actually focus on constructing a
spanning tree whose degree is within one from the optimal. Our algorithm uses
registers on bits, converges in a polynomial number of rounds, and
performs polynomial-time computation at each node. Specifically, the algorithm
constructs and stabilizes on a special class of spanning trees, with degree at
most . Indeed, we prove that, unless NP coNP, there are no
proof-labeling schemes involving polynomial-time computation at each node for
the whole family of spanning trees with degree at most . Up to our
knowledge, this is the first example of the design of a compact silent
self-stabilizing algorithm constructing, and stabilizing on a subset of optimal
solutions to a natural problem for which there are no time-efficient
proof-labeling schemes. On our way to design our algorithm, we establish a set
of independent results that may have interest on their own. In particular, we
describe a new space-optimal silent self-stabilizing spanning tree
construction, stabilizing on \emph{any} spanning tree, in rounds, and
using just \emph{one} additional bit compared to the size of the labels used to
certify trees. We also design a silent loop-free self-stabilizing algorithm for
transforming a tree into another tree. Last but not least, we provide a silent
self-stabilizing algorithm for computing and certifying the labels of a
NCA-labeling scheme
