Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Computer Engineering, Izmir, 2006Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 63-69)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishx, 85 leavesIn this thesis, we aim to design and implement three protocols on a hierarchical architecture to solve the balanced clustering, backbone formation and distributed mutual exclusion problems for mobile ad hoc network(MANET)s. Our ¯rst goal is to cluster the MANET into balanced partitions. Clustering is a widely used approach to ease implemen-tation of various problems such as routing and resource management in MANETs. We propose the Merging Clustering Algorithm(MCA) for clustering in MANETs that merges clusters to form higher level of clusters by increasing their levels. Secondly, we aim to con-struct a directed ring topology across clusterheads which were selected by MCA. Lastly, we implement the distributed mutual exclusion algorithm based on Ricart-Agrawala algo-rithm for MANETs(Mobile RA). Each cluster is represented by a coordinator node on the ring which implements distributed mutual exclusion algorithm on behalf of any member in the cluster it represents. We show the operations of the algorithms, analyze their time and message complexities and provide results in the simulation environment of ns2

Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlay Deployment on MANET: A Survey

    Get PDF
There are many common characteristics between Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks and Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET). Self-organization, decentralization, dynamicity and changing topology are the most shared features. Furthermore, when used together, the two approaches complement each other. P2P overlays provide data storage/retrieval functionality, and their routing information can complement that of MANET. MANET provides wireless connectivity between clients without depending on any pre-existing infrastructure. The aim of this paper is to survey current P2P over MANET systems. Specifically, this paper focuses on and investigates structured P2P over MANET. Overall, more than thirty distinct approaches have been classified into groups and introduced in tables providing a structured overview of the area. The survey addresses the identified approaches in terms of P2P systems, MANET underlay systems and the performance of the reviewed systems

Unsupervised Machine Learning based Energy Efficient Routing for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) are temporary networks formed by a group of mobile hosts without the need for centralized administration or specific support services. Energy consumption is a critical issue in MANETs due to their reliance on limited battery resources. Reducing energy consumption is crucial for increasing network lifespan and throughput. Existing energy-saving techniques often fall short in their effectiveness. This research proposes a novel approach that combines a proactive MANET routing protocol with an energy-efficient strategy to address these limitations. The proposed solution considers both node mobility and energy levels in the routing process. Traditional AODV routing relies on flooding, which broadcasts RREQ packets to all nodes within the sender's range. This often leads to unnecessary retransmissions of RREQ and RREP packets, resulting in collisions and network congestion. To overcome this issue, we propose an optimized route discovery mechanism for AODV. The key idea is to leverage the K-means clustering algorithm to select the optimal cluster of nodes to forward RREQ packets instead of relying on broadcasting. This approach aims to alleviate network congestion and reduce end-to-end delay by minimizing unnecessary control packet transmissions

Design and Analysis of SD_DWCA - A Mobility based clustering of Homogeneous MANETs

This paper deals with the design and analysis of the distributed weighted clustering algorithm SD_DWCA proposed for homogeneous mobile ad hoc networks. It is a connectivity, mobility and energy based clustering algorithm which is suitable for scalable ad hoc networks. The algorithm uses a new graph parameter called strong degree defined based on the quality of neighbours of a node. The parameters are so chosen to ensure high connectivity, cluster stability and energy efficient communication among nodes of high dynamic nature. This paper also includes the experimental results of the algorithm implemented using the network simulator NS2. The experimental results show that the algorithm is suitable for high speed networks and generate stable clusters with less maintenance overhead

Tom and Jerry Based Multipath Routing with Optimal K-medoids for choosing Best Clusterhead in MANET

Given the unpredictable nature of a MANET, routing has emerged as a major challenge in recent years. For effective routing in a MANET, it is necessary to establish both the route discovery and the best route selection from among many routes. The primary focus of this investigation is on finding the best path for data transmission in MANETs. In this research, we provide an efficient routing technique for minimising the time spent passing data between routers. Here, we employ a routing strategy based on Tom and Jerry Optimization (TJO) to find the best path via the MANET's routers, called Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV). The AODV-TJO acronym stands for the suggested approach. This routing technique takes into account not just one but three goal functions: total number of hops. When a node or connection fails in a network, rerouting must be done. In order to prevent packet loss, the MANET employs this rerouting technique. Analyses of AODV-efficacy TJO's are conducted, and results are presented in terms of energy use, end-to-end latency, and bandwidth, as well as the proportion of living and dead nodes. Vortex Search Algorithm (VSO) and cuckoo search are compared to the AODV-TJO approach in terms of performance. Based on the findings, the AODV-TJO approach uses 580 J less energy than the Cuckoo search algorithm when used with 500 nodes
