SAT-based Analysis, (Re-)Configuration & Optimization in the Context of Automotive Product documentation
An introduction to personalization and mass customization
Mass customization as a state-of-the-art production paradigm aims to produce individualized, highly variant products and services with nearly mass production costs. A major side-effect for companies providing complex products and services is that customers quite often get confused by the high variety and do not make a purchase. Personalization technologies can help to alleviate the challenges of mass customization. These technologies support customers in specifying products and services that fit their wishes and needs in a fashion where decision and interaction efforts with sales support systems are significantly reduced. We provide a short overview of related research and the articles that are part of this special issue on Personalization and Mass Customization.Peer reviewe
Anytime diagnosis for reconfiguration
Many domains require scalable algorithms that help to determine diagnoses efficiently
and often within predefined time limits. Anytime diagnosis is able to determine
solutions in such a way and thus is especially useful in real-time scenarios such as production
scheduling, robot control, and communication networks management where diagnosis
and corresponding reconfiguration capabilities play a major role. Anytime diagnosis in
many cases comes along with a trade-off between diagnosis quality and the efficiency of
diagnostic reasoning. In this paper we introduce and analyze FLEXDIAG which is an anytime
direct diagnosis approach. We evaluate the algorithm with regard to performance and diagnosis quality using a configuration benchmark from the domain of feature models and
an industrial configuration knowledge base from the automotive domain. Results show that
FLEXDIAG helps to significantly increase the performance of direct diagnosis search with
corresponding quality tradeoffs in terms of minimality and accuracy
Detecting and Explaining Conflicts in Attributed Feature Models
Product configuration systems are often based on a variability model. The
development of a variability model is a time consuming and error-prone process.
Considering the ongoing development of products, the variability model has to
be adapted frequently. These changes often lead to mistakes, such that some
products cannot be derived from the model anymore, that undesired products are
derivable or that there are contradictions in the variability model. In this
paper, we propose an approach to discover and to explain contradictions in
attributed feature models efficiently in order to assist the developer with the
correction of mistakes. We use extended feature models with attributes and
arithmetic constraints, translate them into a constraint satisfaction problem
and explore those for contradictions. When a contradiction is found, the
constraints are searched for a set of contradicting relations by the
QuickXplain algorithm.Comment: In Proceedings FMSPLE 2015, arXiv:1504.0301
Automated Diagnosis of Product-line Configuration Errors in Feature Models
Feature models are widely used to model software
product-line (SPL) variability. SPL variants are configured
by selecting feature sets that satisfy feature model constraints.
Configuration of large feature models can involve
multiple stages and participants, which makes it hard to
avoid conflicts and errors. New techniques are therefore
needed to debug invalid configurations and derive the minimal
set of changes to fix flawed configurations.
This paper provides three contributions to debugging
feature model configurations: (1) we present a technique
for transforming a flawed feature model configuration into
a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) and show how a
constraint solver can derive the minimal set of feature selection
changes to fix an invalid configuration, (2) we show
how this diagnosis CSP can automatically resolve conflicts
between configuration participant decisions, and (3)
we present experiment results that evaluate our technique.
These results show that our technique scales to models with
over 5,000 features, which is well beyond the size used to
validate other automated techniques.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIN2006-0047
New Formal Methods for Automotive Configuration
Automated Reasoning for Multi-step Feature Model Configuration Problems
The increasing complexity and cost of software-intensive
systems has led developers to seek ways of increasing software
reusability. One software reuse approach is to develop
a Software Product-line (SPL), which is a reconfigurable
software architecture that can be reused across projects.
Creating configurations of the SPL that meets arbitrary requirements
is hard.
Existing research has focused on techniques that produce
a configuration of the SPL in a single step. This paper
provides three contributions to the study of multi-step configuration
for SPLs. First, we present a formal model of
multi-step SPL configuration and map this model to constraint
satisfaction problems (CSPs). Second, we show how
solutions to these CSP configuration problem CSPs can be
derived automatically with a constraint solver. Third, we
present empirical results demonstrating that our CSP-based
technique can solve multi-step configuration problems involving
hundreds of features in seconds.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIN2006-00472Junta de Andalucía TIC-253
On Formal Methods for Large-Scale Product Configuration

In product development companies mass customization is widely used to achieve better customer satisfaction while keeping costs down. To efficiently implement mass customization, product platforms are often used. A product platform allows building a wide range of products from a set of predefined components. The process of matching these components to customers' needs is called product configuration. Not all components can be combined with each other due to restrictions of various kinds, for example, geometrical, marketing and legal reasons. Product design engineers develop configuration constraints to describe such restrictions. The number of constraints and the complexity of the relations between them are immense for complex product like a vehicle. Thus, it is both error-prone and time consuming to analyze, author and verify the constraints manually. Software tools based on formal methods can help engineers to avoid making errors when working with configuration constraints, thus design a correct product faster.

This thesis introduces a number of formal methods to help engineers maintain, verify and analyze product configuration constraints. These methods provide automatic verification of constraints and computational support for analyzing and refactoring constraints. The methods also allow verifying the correctness of one specific type of constraints, item usage rules, for sets of mutually-exclusive required items, and automatic verification of equivalence of different formulations of the constraints. The thesis also introduces three methods for efficient enumeration of valid partial configurations, with benchmarking of the methods on an industrial dataset.

Handling large-scale industrial product configuration problems demands high efficiency from the software methods. This thesis investigates a number of search-based and knowledge-compilation-based methods for working with large product configuration instances, including Boolean satisfiability solvers, binary decision diagrams and decomposable negation normal form. This thesis also proposes a novel method based on supervisory control theory for efficient reasoning about product configuration data. The methods were implemented in a tool, to investigate the applicability of the methods for handling large product configuration problems. It was found that search-based Boolean satisfiability solvers with incremental capabilities are well suited for industrial configuration problems.

The methods proposed in this thesis exhibit good performance on practical configuration problems, and have a potential to be implemented in industry to support product design engineers in creating and maintaining configuration constraints, and speed up the development of product platforms and new products.</p
Automated analysis of feature models: Quo vadis?
Feature models have been used since the 90's to describe software product lines as a way of reusing common parts in a family of software systems. In 2010, a systematic literature review was published summarizing the advances and settling the basis of the area of Automated Analysis of Feature Models (AAFM). From then on, different studies have applied the AAFM in different domains. In this paper, we provide an overview of the evolution of this field since 2010 by performing a systematic mapping study considering 423 primary sources. We found six different variability facets where the AAFM is being applied that define the tendencies: product configuration and derivation; testing and evolution; reverse engineering; multi-model variability-analysis; variability modelling and variability-intensive systems. We also confirmed that there is a lack of industrial evidence in most of the cases. Finally, we present where and when the papers have been published and who are the authors and institutions that are contributing to the field. We observed that the maturity is proven by the increment in the number of journals published along the years as well as the diversity of conferences and workshops where papers are published. We also suggest some synergies with other areas such as cloud or mobile computing among others that can motivate further research in the future.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2015-70560-RJunta de Andalucía TIC-186
