    Strategies for producing fast finite element solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on massively parallel architectures

    To take advantage of the inherent flexibility of the finite element method in solving for flows within complex geometries, it is necessary to produce efficient implementations of the method. Segregation of the solution scheme and the use of parallel computers are two ways of doing this. Here, the optimisation of a sequential segregated finite element algorithm is discussed, together with the various strategies by which this is done. Furthermore, the implications of parallelising the code onto a massively parallel computer, the MasPar, are explored. This machine is of Single Instruction Multiple Data type and so modifications to the computer code have been necessary. A general methodology for the implementation of finite element programs is presented based on projecting the levels of data within the algorithm into a form which is ideal for parallelisation. Application of this methodology, in a high level language, has resulted in a code which runs at just under 30MFlops (in double precision). The computations are performed with minimal inter-processor communication and this represents an efficiency of 20% of the theoretical peak speed. Even though only high level language constructs have been used, this efficiency is comparable with other work using low level constructs on machines of this architecture.     Representations of the city in video games

    This research strives to characterize the means by which video game players experience and understand the space of the game city during the course of play. Three-dimensional video game cities are neither static environments nor stationary views; rather, they are experienced through movement, action, and play. Our experiences of new places are not developed at a glance. Instead, they are cultivated through use over time. This work utilizes games that take place in constructed versions of New York City as a case study. By focusing on the ways players navigate spaces, we can understand how they construct spatial awareness and how this space is transformed into a meaningful place of play. In order to come to this understanding, this study asks a series of questions: How are these spaces arranged? How does the player move through the space and how does the game teach spatial navigation? What actions are performed in the space and how is gameplay adapted for the city environment? And how do of narrative environments contribute to a player's identification with the space? These questions are examined within a framework of urban, cultural, and game studies. I examine techniques that are employed by video game city designers to help players navigate space and make it meaningful. This book offers a comprehensive review of the methods that form the core of urban informatics from various kinds of urban remote sensing to new approaches to machine learning and statistical modelling. It provides a detailed technical introduction to the wide array of tools information scientists need to develop the key urban analytics that are fundamental to learning about the smart city, and it outlines ways in which these tools can be used to inform design and policy so that cities can become more efficient with a greater concern for environment and equity
