Investigation on soft computing techniques for airport environment evaluation systems
Spatial and temporal information exist widely in engineering fields, especially
in airport environmental management systems. Airport environment is influenced
by many different factors and uncertainty is a significant part of the
system. Decision support considering this kind of spatial and temporal information
and uncertainty is crucial for airport environment related engineering
planning and operation. Geographical information systems and computer aided
design are two powerful tools in supporting spatial and temporal information
systems. However, the present geographical information systems and computer
aided design software are still too general in considering the special features in
airport environment, especially for uncertainty. In this thesis, a series of parameters
and methods for neural network-based knowledge discovery and training
improvement are put forward, such as the relative strength of effect, dynamic
state space search strategy and compound architecture. [Continues.
The use of neural networks for fitting complex kinetic data
Congrès ESCAPE-3: European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering n.3, Graz , Autriche, 1993In this paper the use of neural networks for fitting complex kinetic data is discussed. To assess the validity of the approach two different neural network architectures are compared with the traditional kinetic identification methods for two cases: the homogeneous esterification reaction between propionic anhydride and 2-butanol. catalysed by sulphuric acid and the heterogeneous liquid-liquid toluene mononitration by mixed acid. A large set of experimental data obtained by adiabatic and heat flux calorimetry and by gas chromatography is used for the training of the neural networks. The results indicate that the neural network approach can be used to deal with the fitting of complex kinetic data to obtain an approximate reaction rate function in a limited amount of time which can be used for design improvement or optimisation when owing to small production levels or time constraints. it is not possible to develop a detailed kinetic analysis.Publicad
A new neural network technique for the design of multilayered microwave shielded bandpass filters
In this work, we propose a novel technique based on neural networks, for the design of microwave filters in shielded printed technology. The technique uses radial basis function neural networks to represent the non linear relations between the quality factors and coupling coefficients, with the geometrical dimensions of the resonators. The radial basis function neural networks are employed for the first time in the design task of shielded printed filters, and permit a fast and precise operation with only a limited set of training data. Thanks to a new cascade configuration, a set of two neural networks provide the dimensions of the complete filter in a fast and accurate way. To improve the calculation of the geometrical dimensions, the neural networks can take as inputs both electrical parameters and physical dimensions computed by other neural networks. The neural network technique is combined with gradient based optimization methods to further improve the response of the filters. Results are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed technique for the design of practical microwave printed coupled line and hairpin filters
Abnormality Detection in Mammography using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. The most common
screening technology is mammography. To reduce the cost and workload of
radiologists, we propose a computer aided detection approach for classifying
and localizing calcifications and masses in mammogram images. To improve on
conventional approaches, we apply deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) for
automatic feature learning and classifier building. In computer-aided
mammography, deep CNN classifiers cannot be trained directly on full mammogram
images because of the loss of image details from resizing at input layers.
Instead, our classifiers are trained on labelled image patches and then adapted
to work on full mammogram images for localizing the abnormalities.
State-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks are compared on their
performance of classifying the abnormalities. Experimental results indicate
that VGGNet receives the best overall accuracy at 92.53\% in classifications.
For localizing abnormalities, ResNet is selected for computing class activation
maps because it is ready to be deployed without structural change or further
training. Our approach demonstrates that deep convolutional neural network
classifiers have remarkable localization capabilities despite no supervision on
the location of abnormalities is provided.Comment: 6 page
An Efficient Automatic Mass Classification Method In Digitized Mammograms Using Artificial Neural Network
In this paper we present an efficient computer aided mass classification
method in digitized mammograms using Artificial Neural Network (ANN), which
performs benign-malignant classification on region of interest (ROI) that
contains mass. One of the major mammographic characteristics for mass
classification is texture. ANN exploits this important factor to classify the
mass into benign or malignant. The statistical textural features used in
characterizing the masses are mean, standard deviation, entropy, skewness,
kurtosis and uniformity. The main aim of the method is to increase the
effectiveness and efficiency of the classification process in an objective
manner to reduce the numbers of false-positive of malignancies. Three layers
artificial neural network (ANN) with seven features was proposed for
classifying the marked regions into benign and malignant and 90.91% sensitivity
and 83.87% specificity is achieved that is very much promising compare to the
radiologist's sensitivity 75%.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
Medical imaging analysis with artificial neural networks
Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging
AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends
The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. The trends over the last decade are identified, discussed with respect to expected trends and directions for future work suggested
