Benchmark Analysis of Representative Deep Neural Network Architectures
This work presents an in-depth analysis of the majority of the deep neural
networks (DNNs) proposed in the state of the art for image recognition. For
each DNN multiple performance indices are observed, such as recognition
accuracy, model complexity, computational complexity, memory usage, and
inference time. The behavior of such performance indices and some combinations
of them are analyzed and discussed. To measure the indices we experiment the
use of DNNs on two different computer architectures, a workstation equipped
with a NVIDIA Titan X Pascal and an embedded system based on a NVIDIA Jetson
TX1 board. This experimentation allows a direct comparison between DNNs running
on machines with very different computational capacity. This study is useful
for researchers to have a complete view of what solutions have been explored so
far and in which research directions are worth exploring in the future; and for
practitioners to select the DNN architecture(s) that better fit the resource
constraints of practical deployments and applications. To complete this work,
all the DNNs, as well as the software used for the analysis, are available

Physical Multi-Layer Phantoms for Intra-Body Communications
This paper presents approaches to creating tissue mimicking materials that
can be used as phantoms for evaluating the performance of Body Area Networks
(BAN). The main goal of the paper is to describe a methodology to create a
repeatable experimental BAN platform that can be customized depending on the
BAN scenario under test. Comparisons between different material compositions
and percentages are shown, along with the resulting electrical properties of
each mixture over the frequency range of interest for intra-body
communications; 100 KHz to 100 MHz. Test results on a composite multi-layer
sample are presented confirming the efficacy of the proposed methodology. To
date, this is the first paper that provides guidance on how to decide on
concentration levels of ingredients, depending on the exact frequency range of
operation, and the desired matched electrical characteristics (conductivity vs.
permittivity), to create multi-layer phantoms for intra-body communication
applications
QoS routing in ad-hoc networks using GA and multi-objective optimization
Much work has been done on routing in Ad-hoc networks, but the proposed routing solutions only deal with the best effort data traffic. Connections with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as voice channels with delay and bandwidth constraints, are not supported. The QoS routing has been receiving increasingly intensive attention, but searching for the shortest path with many metrics is an NP-complete problem. For this reason, approximated solutions and heuristic algorithms should be developed for multi-path constraints QoS routing. Also, the routing methods should be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and multi-objective optimization for QoS routing in Ad-hoc Networks. In order to reduce the search space of GA, we implemented a search space reduction algorithm, which reduces the search space for GAMAN (GA-based routing algorithm for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) to find a new route. We evaluate the performance of GAMAN by computer simulations and show that GAMAN has better behaviour than GLBR (Genetic Load Balancing Routing).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Coverage and Connectivity in Three-Dimensional Networks
Most wireless terrestrial networks are designed based on the assumption that
the nodes are deployed on a two-dimensional (2D) plane. However, this 2D
assumption is not valid in underwater, atmospheric, or space communications. In
fact, recent interest in underwater acoustic ad hoc and sensor networks hints
at the need to understand how to design networks in 3D. Unfortunately, the
design of 3D networks is surprisingly more difficult than the design of 2D
networks. For example, proofs of Kelvin's conjecture and Kepler's conjecture
required centuries of research to achieve breakthroughs, whereas their 2D
counterparts are trivial to solve. In this paper, we consider the coverage and
connectivity issues of 3D networks, where the goal is to find a node placement
strategy with 100% sensing coverage of a 3D space, while minimizing the number
of nodes required for surveillance. Our results indicate that the use of the
Voronoi tessellation of 3D space to create truncated octahedral cells results
in the best strategy. In this truncated octahedron placement strategy, the
transmission range must be at least 1.7889 times the sensing range in order to
maintain connectivity among nodes. If the transmission range is between 1.4142
and 1.7889 times the sensing range, then a hexagonal prism placement strategy
or a rhombic dodecahedron placement strategy should be used. Although the
required number of nodes in the hexagonal prism and the rhombic dodecahedron
placement strategies is the same, this number is 43.25% higher than the number
of nodes required by the truncated octahedron placement strategy. We verify by
simulation that our placement strategies indeed guarantee ubiquitous coverage.
We believe that our approach and our results presented in this paper could be
