Cooling the Collective Motion of Trapped Ions to Initialize a Quantum Register
We report preparation in the ground state of collective modes of motion of
two trapped 9Be+ ions. This is a crucial step towards realizing quantum logic
gates which can entangle the ions' internal electronic states. We find that
heating of the modes of relative ion motion is substantially suppressed
relative to that of the center-of-mass modes, suggesting the importance of

Graphene Versus MoS2: a Short Review
Graphene and MoS2 are two well-known quasi two-dimensional materials. This
review is a comparative survey of the complementary lattice dynamical and
mechanical properties of graphene and MoS2. This comparison facilitates the
study of graphene/MoS2 heterostructures, which is expected to mitigate the

Low-temperature far-infrared ellipsometry of convergent beam
Development of an ellipsometry to the case of a coherent far infrared
irradiation, low temperatures and small samples is described, including a
decision of the direct and inverse problems of the convergent beam ellipsometry
for an arbitrary wavelength, measurement technique and a compensating
orientation of cryostat windows. Experimental results are presented: for a gold
film and UBe13 single crystal at room temperature (lambda=119 um), temperature
dependencies of the complex dielectric function of SrTiO3 (lambda=119, 84 and
28 um) and of YBa2Cu3O7-delta ceramic (lambda=119 um).Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
70Ge(p,gamma)71As and 76Ge(p,n)76As cross sections for the astrophysical p process: sensitivity of the optical proton potential at low energies
The cross sections of the 70Ge(p,gamma)71As and 76Ge(p,n)76As reactions have
been measured with the activation method in the Gamow window for the
astrophysical p process. The experiments were carried out at the Van de Graaff
and cyclotron accelerators of ATOMKI. The cross sections have been derived by
measuring the decay gamma-radiation of the reaction products. The results are
compared to the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations
using the code NON-SMOKER. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental
S factors is found. Based on the new data, modifications of the optical
potential used for low-energy protons are discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Hyperfine Spectroscopy of Optically Trapped Atoms
We perform spectroscopy on the hyperfine splitting of Rb atoms trapped
in far-off-resonance optical traps. The existence of a spatially dependent
shift in the energy levels is shown to induce an inherent dephasing effect,
which causes a broadening of the spectroscopic line and hence an inhomogeneous
loss of atomic coherence at a much faster rate than the homogeneous one caused
by spontaneous photon scattering. We present here a number of approaches for
reducing this inhomogeneous broadening, based on trap geometry, additional
laser fields, and novel microwave pulse sequences. We then show how hyperfine
spectroscopy can be used to study quantum dynamics of optically trapped atoms.Comment: Review/Tutoria
Long-life 3-axis satellite attitude sensing, phase 1
The purpose was to investigate the feasibility of new, moderate-cost, high reliability navigation sensors for high-altitude satellites, using stellar sources to obviate the use of gyroscopic devices. The primary investigation focused on the need for developing a star tracker model to replace an old star tracker which is still needed for current probe and satellite programs. One innovative element of the proposed star tracker was the design, development, and testing of technology components related to a phase scrambler plate. The purpose of the phase scrambler plate is to convert the impulse response of the optical system from a point image to a uniformly bright, square, angularly large, in-focus image of the star source. A collimated star source was built and tested. A breadboard star tracker with an 8 x 8 degree field of view was designed and built. It was tested in normal quad-cell mode (without the phase scrambler plate) and with the phase scrambler plate. Although the phase scrambler plate was crudely made, the performance of the star tracker breadboard was greatly improved using the phase scrambler plate, instead of system defocus. If further developed, the phase scrambler plate may be added as a low-cost retroconversion to any objective lens to greatly improve quad-cell or CCD array tracking; applications include star trackers, laser metrology, laser machining optics, and surveying instrumentation
