    Computation of emotions

    When people talk to each other, they express their feelings through facial expressions, tone of voice, body postures and gestures. They even do this when they are interacting with machines. These hidden signals are an important part of human communication, but most computer systems ignore them. Emotions need to be considered as an important mode of communication between people and interactive systems. Affective computing has enjoyed considerable success over the past 20 years, but many challenges remain.This is the author's accepted manuscript.     Affective Medicine: a review of Affective Computing efforts in Medical Informatics

    Background: Affective computing (AC) is concerned with emotional interactions performed with and through computers. It is defined as “computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions”. AC enables investigation and understanding of the relation between human emotions and health as well as application of assistive and useful technologies in the medical domain. Objectives: 1) To review the general state of the art in AC and its applications in medicine, and 2) to establish synergies between the research communities of AC and medical informatics. Methods: Aspects related to the human affective state as a determinant of the human health are discussed, coupled with an illustration of significant AC research and related literature output. Moreover, affective communication channels are described and their range of application fields is explored through illustrative examples. Results: The presented conferences, European research projects and research publications illustrate the recent increase of interest in the AC area by the medical community. Tele-home healthcare, AmI, ubiquitous monitoring, e-learning and virtual communities with emotionally expressive characters for elderly or impaired people are few areas where the potential of AC has been realized and applications have emerged. Conclusions: A number of gaps can potentially be overcome through the synergy of AC and medical informatics. The application of AC technologies parallels the advancement of the existing state of the art and the introduction of new methods. The amount of work and projects reviewed in this paper witness an ambitious and optimistic synergetic future of the affective medicine field

    Utilizing External Knowledge to Enhance Semantics in Emotion Detection

    Enabling machines to emotion recognition in conversation is challenging, mainly because the information in human dialogue innately conveys emotions by long-term experience, abundant knowledge, context, and the intricate patterns between the affective states. We address the task of emotion recognition in conversations using external knowledge to enhance semantics. We propose KES model, a new framework that incorporates different elements of external knowledge and conversational semantic role labeling, where build upon them to learn interactions between interlocutors participating in a conversation. We design a self-attention layer specialized for enhanced semantic text features with external commonsense knowledge. Then, two different networks composed of LSTM are responsible for tracking individual internal state and context external state. In addition, the proposed model has experimented on three datasets in emotion detection in conversation. The experimental results show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on most of the tested datasets

    A Sociable Humanoid Autonomous Robotic Platform (the SHARP Project): An evaluation of the G.E.N.E.S.I.S. robot as an interactive consumer robotic platform

    The Social Humanoid Autonomous Robotic Platform (SHARP) project is an android project that was created with the intent of making learning about androids and robotics easier for the novice, diverse for the expert, educational in the classroom, and useful in the home or business. The project centers itself on its simplicity, low cost, and expandability. This paper illustrates how the SHARP Project has the potential to be an affordable fit in nearly every modern setting. The introduction of the SHARP project lays the groundwork for people of many ages, incomes, and educational levels to take advantage of robotics technology. The SHARP project features research based, in part, on a personal android project named G.E.N.E.S.I.S. as an example of the SHARP project\u27s features. The features of G.E.N.E.S.I.S. include voice recognition, speech synthesis, and responses to various sensor stimuli which help encourage human-robot interaction. This study uses survey results to examine the factors that make these robots desirable to consumers and identifies which factors make some robots more sociable than others. The study concludes with an evaluation of the G.E.N.E.S.I.S. robotic platform and suggests an appropriate market niche for this and other similar sociable humanoid robotic platforms

    Assessing the Correlation Between Organizational Competency Development and Learning Activities & Programs - An Investigation of the Kenyan Private Sector

    For any enterprise to be successful in its activities, human resources must exhibit great competence. In a workplace setting, competency entails the ability of an employee to execute a task effectively and efficiently. In this regard, competence is highly related to the level of effectiveness and efficiency depicted by the employees of an organization when executing their jobs. If business executives in specific and the shareholders, in general, without clearly understanding the relationship between the competency of the employees and the training programs, not only will they be misappropriating a firm's scarce resources but also imperiling the core vision of the organization as well as the corporate objectives. Business organization managers must conceptualize and understand the relationship between their firms' competency development and learning activities and programs that they use. As such, this study was made to study the workplace context of Kenyan-based business organizations and set out whether there exists a correlation between organizational competency development and learning activities and programs. A quantitative approach was used that entailed the analyses of participants' responses collected through a survey questionnaire. T-Test, Chi-square test, and One Way MANOVA analysis were conducted on the data to test the set hypothesis.
