    Performance Enhancement of Android Application Testing using Android Devices as a Service Cloud Model

    The recent spurt in Android devices has given rise to the development of millions of Android applications. Hence there is a need for rapid and efficient testing techniques to satiate the global app demand. Hence the paper proposes an automated testing framework by deployment testing practices on the cloud. Android devices could be tested by connecting them through wired or wireless connections. This framework can be addressed as Android Testing as a Service (ATaaS) which assists in carrying out functional testing, performance testing etc. The paper also demonstrates the use of a MAT tool to carryout automated testing, the results of which can be compared to conventional testing practices. It also gives us a gist of virtualization. Hence Cloud Testing Platform (CTP) aims at providing all the conventional testing practices at higher speed, availability and lower cost of testing these applications and the limited resources available in mobile devices.. Developers can conduct compatibility tests in various Android devices only by uploading test programs and scripts to cloud testing platforms

    Building distributed heterogeneous smart phone Java applications an evaluation from a development perspective

    The advances in mobile phone technology have enabled such devices to be programmed to run general-purpose applications using a special edition of the Java programming language. Java is designed to be a heterogeneous programming language targeting different platforms. Such ability when coupled with the provision of high-speed mobile Internet access would open the door for a new breed of distributed mobile applications. This paper explores the capabilities and limitations of this technology and addresses the considerations that must be taken when designing and developing such distributed applications. Our findings are verified by building a test client-server system where the clients in this system are mobile phones behaving as active processing elements not just mere service requesters

    Cloud Platform for Research Crowdsourcing in Mobile Testing

    Mobile application testing and testing over a cloud are two highly topical fields nowadays. Mobile testing presents specific test activities, including verification of an application against a variety of heterogeneous smartphone models and versions of operating systems (OS), build distribution and test team management, monitoring and user experience analytics of an application in production, etc. Cloud benefits are widely used to support all these activities. This study conducts in-depth analyses of existing cloud services for mobile testing and addresses their weaknesses regarding research purposes and testing needs of the critical and business-critical mobile applications.   During this study, a Cloud Testing of Mobile Systems (CTOMS) framework for effective research crowdsourcing in mobile testing was developed. The framework is presented as a lightweight and easily scalable distributed system that provides a cloud service to run tests on a variety of remote mobile devices. CTOMS provides implementation of two novel functionalities that are demanded by advanced investigations in mobile testing. First, it allows full multidirectional testing, which provides the opportunities to test an application on different devices and/or OS versions, and new device models or OS versions for their compatibility with the most popular applications in the market, or just legacy critical apps, etc. Second, CTOMS demonstrates the effective integration of the appropriate testing techniques for mobile development within such a service. In particular, it provides a user with suggestions about coverage of configurations to test on using combinatorial approaches like a base choice, pair-wise, and t-way. The current CTOMS version supports automated functional testing of Android applications and detection of defects in the user interface (UI). This has a great value because requirements for UI and user experience are high for any modern mobile application.    The fundamental analysis of possible test types and techniques using a system like CTOMS was conducted, and ways of possible enhancements and extensions of functionality for possible research are listed. The first case studies prove the work of implemented novel concepts, their usefulness, and their convenience for experiments in mobile testing. The overall work proves that a study of cloud mobile testing is feasible even with small research resources.  M.S

    Two research contributions in 64-bit computing: Testing and Applications

    Following the release of Windows 64-bit and Redhat Linux 64-bit operating systems (OS) in late April 2005, this is the one of the first 64-bit OS research project completed in a British university. The objective is to investigate (1) the increase/decrease in performance compared to 32-bit computing; (2) the techniques used to develop 64-bit applications; and (3) how 64-bit computing should be used in IT and research organizations to improve their work. This paper summarizes research discoveries for this investigation, including two major research contributions in (1) testing and (2) application development. The first contribution includes performance, stress, application, multiplatform, JDK and compatibility testing for AMD and Intel models. Comprehensive testing results reveal that 64-bit computing has a better performance in application performance, system performance and stress testing, but a worse performance in compatibility testing than the traditional 32-bit computing. A 64-bit dual-core processor has been tested and the results show that it performs better than a 64-bit single-core processor, but only in application that requires very high demands of CPU and memory consumption. The second contribution is .NET 1.1 64-bit implementations. Without additional troubleshooting, .NET 1.1 does not work on 64-bit Windows operating systems in stable ways. After stabilizing .NET environment, the next step is the application development, which is a dynamic repository with functions such as registration, download, login-logout, product submissions, database storage and statistical reports. The technology is based on Visual Studio .NET 2003, .NET 1.1 Framework with Service Pack 1, SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4 and IIS Server 6.0 on the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 platform with Service Pack 1

    Investigations on electromagnetic noises and interactions in electronic architectures : a tutorial case on a mobile system

    Electromagnetic interactions become critic in embedded and smart electronic structures. The increase of electronic performances confined in a finite volume or support for mobile applications defines new electromagnetic environment and compatibility configurations (EMC). With canonical demonstrators developed for tutorials and EMC experiences, this paper present basic principles and experimental techniques to investigate and control these severe interferences. Some issues are reviewed to present actual and future scientific challenges for EMC at electronic circuit level

    MONROE-Nettest: A Configurable Tool for Dissecting Speed Measurements in Mobile Broadband Networks

    As the demand for mobile connectivity continues to grow, there is a strong need to evaluate the performance of Mobile Broadband (MBB) networks. In the last years, mobile "speed", quantified most commonly by data rate, gained popularity as the widely accepted metric to describe their performance. However, there is a lack of consensus on how mobile speed should be measured. In this paper, we design and implement MONROE-Nettest to dissect mobile speed measurements, and investigate the effect of different factors on speed measurements in the complex mobile ecosystem. MONROE-Nettest is built as an Experiment as a Service (EaaS) on top of the MONROE platform, an open dedicated platform for experimentation in operational MBB networks. Using MONROE-Nettest, we conduct a large scale measurement campaign and quantify the effects of measurement duration, number of TCP flows, and server location on measured downlink data rate in 6 operational MBB networks in Europe. Our results indicate that differences in parameter configuration can significantly affect the measurement results.     Synote Mobile has been developed as an accessible cross device and cross browser HTML5 webbased collaborative replay and annotation tool to make web-based recordings easier to access, search, manage, and exploit for learners, teachers and others. It has been developed as a new mobile HTML5 version of the award winning open source and freely available Synote which has been used since 2008 by students throughout the world to learn interactively from recordings. While most UK students now carry mobile devices capable of replaying Internet video, the majority of these devices cannot replay Synote’s accessible, searchable, annotated recordings as Synote was created in 2008 when few students had phones or tablets capable of replaying these videos
