Comparing Out-of-Sample Predictive Ability of PLS, Covariance, and Regression Models
Partial Least Squares Path Modelling (PLSPM) is a popular technique for estimating structural equation models in the social sciences, and is frequently presented as an alternative to covariance-based analysis as being especially suited for predictive modeling. While existing research on PLSPM has focused on its use in causal-explanatory modeling, this paper follows two recent papers at ICIS 2012 and 2013 in examining how PLSPM performs when used for predictive purposes. Additionally, as a predictive technique, we compare PLSPM to traditional regression methods that are widely used for predictive modelling in other disciplines. Specifically, we employ out-of-sample k-fold cross-validation to compare PLSPM to covariance-SEM and a range of a-theoretical regression techniques in a simulation study. Our results show that PLSPM offers advantages over covariance-SEM and other prediction methods
Dimensions That Influence the Creation of Brand Value of a Music Event and Its Influence on Attendee Satisfaction
Background: Music festivals are part of the cultural industry, and have become an evergrowing
phenomenon. It is essential for organisers to identify whether the marketing strategies
implemented are positive and effective in generating a competitive advantage. The aim of this study
is to identify the elements that make up the brand equity of an emerging music festival, and to
find out whether the overall brand equity determines the satisfaction and subsequent behaviours of
festival-goers. Methods: Quantitative research was used by conducting an ad hoc structured survey
during the development of a live music festival in May 2022. The questionnaire collects information
about dimensions that make up the global brand value and how they influence satisfaction and
behavioural intentions, consisting of a total of 33 indicators.; Results: Awareness, perceived quality,
and loyalty are the most influential dimensions in shaping the brand of a festival. There is a correlation
between the overall brand value and the satisfaction of the attendees, and that the latter influences
the subsequent loyalty and recommendation of the event. Conclusions: The causal relationships
between the dimensions of brand equity and overall brand equity are shown, where three of the four
hypotheses are accepted. Similarly, the three hypotheses related to the influence of overall brand
image and behavioural intentions are also accepte
From Words to Results: The Role of IS in Bridging the Sustainability Strategy-Implementation Gap
After many years of reluctance and lack of commitment, companies are increasingly prioritizing sustainability and setting ambitious goals. Along with the rise of organizational sustainability strategy (OSS), the role of information systems (IS) in sustainability has increased and become a source of sustainability at the organizational level. Although ever more companies consider sustainability a top priority, they struggle to turn sustainability strategies into practice and observe measurable results. We followed a mixed methods approach combining qualitative interview data (n=13) and quantitative data from a multi-continental industry survey (n=551) to generate an in-depth understanding of the role of IS-enabled sustainability practices in influencing the organizational sustainability strategy-implementation gap. With our study, we demonstrate that IS-enabled sustainability practices mediate the impact of OSS on organizational sustainability performance (OSP) and that these practices are enabled by IS capabilities that are critical to implementing sustainability practices (technology intelligence, data analysis, and digital twinning capability)
Stakeholder expectations of interpreters : a multi-site, multi-method approach
This thesis uses a multi-method approach to examine the expectations of interpreting stakeholders in two different multilingual church organisations. Drawing on concepts from skopos theory and homiletics and on methodologies and findings from research on client expectations and interpretersâ perceptions of their work, it posits a four part correlational model to explain and predict how the skopos of an interpreted event will relate to stakeholdersâ generic and event-specific expectations of interpreters. Results from a survey, interviews and participant observations all suggest that, contrary to existing theory, there is little evidence of a direct relationship between skopos and expectations of interpreters. On the contrary, it appears that organisational attitudes to interpreting are a much more salient factor in the conceptualisation of the work of interpreters and on the strategies they are expected to use to solve problems. The implications of these results for church interpreting research, theories of interpreting and interpreting practice are discussed, alongside the need to rethink and redesign the methods used in stakeholder expectations research, especially when this involves the use of surveys
Estimating Formative Measurement Models in IS Research â Analysis of the Past and Recommendations for the Future
While debates on the appropriateness of formative measurement within structural equation models continue, such models are frequently found in IS research. IS researchers faced with such a model must identify the best method to estimate the model parameters, and have at their disposal covariance-based structural equation modeling (CBSEM), Partial Least Squares path modeling (PLS), and regression with summed scales, among other techniques. While all these methods can estimate models with formatively-specified latent variables, IS researchers frequently cite the presence of formative measurement as the reason for choosing PLS for model estimation over alternatives. Intuitively, a composite-based method such as PLS would appear to have an advantage in this particular scenario. In fact, some PLS researchers argue that PLS should only be used for such models. However, there is a dearth of empirical studies showing whether such an advantage does indeed exist. In this research, we discuss the statistical problems posed by models that include formatively-specified latent variables, and present a large-scale simulation study to investigate the relative performance of different estimation methods when faced with formative measurement, using models from studies published in MIS Quarterly. Based on our simulation results, we present recommendations for IS researchers interested in the estimation of models that include formatively-specified latent variables
