    Optical study of flow and combustion in an HCCI engine with negative valve overlap

    One of the most widely used methods to enable Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is using negative valve overlapping to trap a sufficient quantity of hot residual gas. The characteristics of air motion with specially designed valve events having reduced valve lift and durations associated with HCCI engines and their effect on subsequent combustion are not yet fully understood. In addition, the ignition process and combustion development in such engines are very different from those in conventional spark-ignition or diesel compression ignition engines. Very little data has been reported concerning optical diagnostics of the flow and combustion in the engine using negative valve overlapping. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the in-cylinder flow characteristics and combustion development in an optical engine operating in HCCI combustion mode. PIV measurements have been taken under motored engine conditions to provide a quantitative flow characterisation of negative valve overlap in-cylinder flows. The ignition and combustion process was imaged using a high resolution charge coupled device (CCD) camera and the combustion imaging data was supplemented by simultaneously recorded in-cylinder pressure data which assisted the analysis of the images. It is found that the flow characteristics with negative valve overlapping are less stable and more valve event driven than typical spark ignition in-cylinder flows, while the combustion initiation locations are not uniformly distributed. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd

    Effect of air-preheating on NOx emissions from a gas turbine combustor

    A 76 mm diameter can combustor equipped with a 45° curved-blade radial swirler was used to study the effect of high inlet temperature gas turbine combustion on NOx emission characteristics. High inlet temperature combustion was simulated using preheat air at 400°K, 600°K, 740°K and 900°K. Natural gas was investigated using passage injection technique. It was demonstrated that increasing the inlet air temperature significantly widened the weak extinction limit and improved the NOx emission characteristics. An optimum NOx emission of less than 4.5 ppm at 15% oxygen, compatible with 99% efficiency was demonstrated at 900K inlet temperature. It was also demonstrated that with high inlet temperature operation lean well-mixed combustion required for an adequate control of NOx emissions could be achieved. The major conclusion reached is that high inlet temperature combustion could be a promising approach for low NOx emissions with high combustion efficiency and good flame stability

Following the previous research on CAI combustion of gasoline fuel, systematic investigation is being carried out on the application of bio-fuels in CAI combustion. As part of an on-going research project, CAI combustion of methanol and ethanol was studied on a single-cylinder direct gasoline engine with an air-assisted injector. The CAI combustion was achieved by trapping part of burnt gas within the cylinder through using short-duration camshafts and early closure of the exhaust valves. During the experiment the engine speed was varied from 1200rpm to 2100rpm and the air/fuel ratio was altered from the stoichiometry to the misfire limit. Their combustion characteristics were obtained by analysing cylinder pressure trace. The experimental results show that both oxygenate fuels, methanol and ethanol, can lead to CAI combustion as well as gasoline fuel. The load of CAI combustion was increased and emissions were lower with the two oxygenate fuels. Methanol was found to have highest output and lowest energy consumption among the three fuels tested. CAI combustion characteristics of the oxygenate fuels were more affected by the amount of burnt residuals trapped than that of gasoline fuel

    Soot formation in strongly backmixed combustion was investigated using the jet-stirred combustor (JSC). This device provided a combustion volume in which temperature and combustion were uniform. It simulated the recirculating characteristics of the gas turbine primary zone; it was in this zone where mixture conditions were sufficiently rich to produce soot. Results indicate that the JSC allows study of soot formation in an aerodynamic situation revelant to gas turbines

A research project was conducted to determine if the reaction control system engine propellants on Apollo spacecraft undergo explosive reaction when subjected to conditions present in the engine at the time of ignition. Combustion characteristics pertinent to the hard-start phenomenon are considered. The thermal stability of frozen mixtures of hydrazine-based fuels with nitrogen tetroxide was analyzed.     Burning of solids in oxygen-rich environments in normal and reduced gravity

    An experimental program was conducted to investigate the combustion characteristics of solids burning in a weightless environment. The combustion characteristics of thin cellulose acetate material were obtained from specimens burned in supercritical as well as in low pressure oxygen atmospheres. Flame spread rates were measured and found to depend on material thickness and pressure in both normal gravity (1-g) and reduced gravity (0-g). A gravity effect on the burning process was also observed; the ratio of 1-g to 0-g flame spread rate becomes larger with increasing material thickness. Qualitative results on the combustion characteristics of metal screens (stainless steel, Inconel, copper, and aluminum) burning in supercritical oxygen and normal gravity are also presented. Stainless steel (300 sq mesh) was successfully ignited in reduced gravity; no apparent difference in the flame spread pattern was observed between 1-g and 0-g

    Characterizing droplet combustion of pure and multi-component liquid fuels in a microgravity environment

    The importance of understanding the effects of fuel composition, length scales, and other parameters on the combustion of liquid fuels has motivated the examination of simple flames which have easily characterized flow fields and hence, the potential of being modeled accurately. One such flame for liquid fuel combustion is the spherically symmetric droplet flame which can be achieved in an environment with sufficiently low gravity (i.e., low buoyancy). To examine fundamental characteristics of spherically symmetric droplet combustion, a drop tower facility has been employed to provide a microgravity environment to study droplet combustion.     During this reporting period, theoretical work on the secondary atomization process was continued and the experimental apparatus was improved. A one-dimensional model of a rocket combustor, incorporating multiple droplet size classes, slurry combustion, secondary atomization, radiation heat transfer, and two-phase slip between slurry droplets and the gas flow was derived and a computer code was written to implement this model. The STANJAN chemical equilibrium solver was coupled with this code to yield gas temperature, density, and composition as functions of axial location. Preliminary results indicate that the model is performing correctly, given current model assumptions. Radiation heat transfer in the combustion chamber is treated as an optically-thick participating media problem requiring a solution of the radiative transfer equation. A cylindrical P sub 1 approximation was employed to yield an analytical expression for chamber-wall heat flux at each axial location. The code exercised to determine the effects of secondary atomization intensity, defined as the number of secondary drops produced per initial drop, on chamber burnout distance and final Al2O3 agglomerate diameter. These results indicate that only weak secondary atomization is required to significantly reduce these two parameters. Stronger atomization intensities were found to yield decreasing marginal benefits. The experimental apparatus was improved to reduce building vibration effects on the optical system alignment. This was accomplished by mounting the burner and the transmitting/receiving optics on a single frame supported by vibration-isolation legs. Calibration and shakedown tests indicate that vibration problems were eliminated and that the system is performing correctly
